Notes / Commercial Description:
As craft beer pioneers, we embarked on an expedition to brew the benchmark West Coast IPA. We ventured into the unknown and struck gold, discovering a tantalizing menagerie of hops. Simcoe for tropical and grapefruit zest, Columbus for hop pungency, Centennial for pine notes, Citra for citrus zest and Cascade for floral aroma are layered throughout the brewing process. West Coast IPA® exemplifies the Green Flash spirit of adventure and discovery.

A - Body is relatively clear, copper in color, with a spotty off-white head that leaves sticky lacing. Head is not much to speak of in itself.

S - As Keanu Reeves would say.. whooooaaa. There are so many aromas goin on I'm not sure which to pick out immediately... Caramel and pine, toffee, pomelo... lots going on here, and it all smells like something I want to make a cologne out of.

T - Hops are more pronounced than the nose, pine, cedar and earth dominate. Citrus undertones are there, but fruity flavors are minute. Balanced well by the light caramel and toffee that I picked up on the nose

M - Pretty thick and easy on carbonation

O - Pretty delicious beer that is so much more than a straightforward hop-bomb.

Pours a hazy amber with a big foamy head that hangs around. Heavy lacing. Big aroma of hops and citrus. Piney hops, grass and grapefruit predominate the taste. Lots of bitterness. Medium mouth that coats the tongue nicely. If you like hops for days, this is a wonderful beer.

Three week old bottle based on "best by" date. Golden amber and a little bit hazy. A 2+ finger head yields some nice lacing. Head retention is very good. Aroma nicely showcases the varied blend of hops used (3 C's and Simcoe): grapefruit, pine, citrus, grassy and floral all at once. Definite emphasis on grass and pine notes. Not as aromatic as I remember this (though it's been a long time since I last tried this).

Super bitter, as expected, with grass and pine prevailing in the flavor. It's like a Christmas tree in your mouth. Malt profile is thoroughly squelched by the hops. Very high apparent bitterness with almost no malt body to speak of, just a faint cracker-like grain like a hoppy pils. Sudsy carbonation is moderately soft. The mouthfeel is otherwise slick and oily. Almost no alcohol on the palate.

A palate-shredding, pine-forward, very west coast IPA. This is a nice example of an extremely hop-forward IPA, but it's not on my list of top IPAs.

A:
Pours a dusty honey color that has ruby hints if held to light with a creamy beige head that pours okay and settles like a rock at a half-inch or so. Good retention; nice web-like lacing.

S:
Smells pretty much hoppy as could be. Fruity and slightly sweet with underripe pineapple, weed, pine, caramel malt notes, and dank earthiness.

T:
Really dry and increasingly bitter towards the finish. Pine and citrus rind with a slightly malty undercurrent and nearly medicinal finish with a nice tingly-ness.

M:
Dry, flat and relatively unobtrusive. The head gives it a nice creamy feel and the carbonation is far from aggressive. Medium body, makes your mouth vibrate, very drinkable.

O:
This is a very good, bitter-but-drinkable IPA.
Really a fine looking beer with a pretty aggressive taste but which is fairly restrained on the whole the ever-present touch of caramely malt flavors really helps it to not get too intense. Very good, pretty easy drinking.
Will have again; worth trying if you can.
