Notes / Commercial Description:
As craft beer pioneers, we embarked on an expedition to brew the benchmark West Coast IPA. We ventured into the unknown and struck gold, discovering a tantalizing menagerie of hops. Simcoe for tropical and grapefruit zest, Columbus for hop pungency, Centennial for pine notes, Citra for citrus zest and Cascade for floral aroma are layered throughout the brewing process. West Coast IPA® exemplifies the Green Flash spirit of adventure and discovery.

Pours a slightly chill hazed golden orange.

Pine, orange, lemon, and resinous.

Lemongrass, lime, orange, pine.

Light-medium bodied, medium carbonation, piney, bitter hop resins.

Overall, not nearly in the same ball park as some of the better West Coast DIPAs but decent.

$2.79 single (or something like that) poured into a shaker pint (insert frowny face).

Appearance: A deep orange color, almost caramel brown. A finger of an off-white, creamy head. Very nice lacing.

Smell: Hops. Grapefruit, pineapple, grass, a bit of pine... a lot of that tropical sort of aroma though. Also some caramel or crystal malts in the aroma as well. No indicated freshness date on this bottle, but this one doesn't seem to be very old.

Taste/feel: The most impressive thing about this beer, without a doubt, is its depth of flavor. It changes quite a lot as it makes its way across your tongue and down your throat. Initially, fairly sweet with the tropical hops and malts. Across your tongue, a slightly spicy hop character comes through to give it a little "kick." At the back and down the throat, it's just an incredible balance. This beer is apparently 90 (?) IBUs, but it's really not very bitter to my tongue. I mean, it's definitely there, but the balance is so great on this beer, that the IBUs mean nothing. The feel is weird to me -- at first it seems really thin and like there's no carbonation, but then it almost morphs into a medium body with a slight bit of tongue prickling carbonation.

My first few sips, I was incredibly underwhelmed with this beer. As I went along, I enjoyed it a little bit more each sip. I'm not too sure I'd consider it a "World Class" sort of IPA, but I will say that the depth of flavors and how much this beer changes as you drink it is a huge feat.

Appearance - good head an retention. A bit hazy.

Smell - amazing!!!! Orange and grapefruit notes. I definitely smell Citra hops. Big, aggressive dry hop. Doesn't smell much better than this in the IPA world.

Taste - also exemplary! barely-there malt backbone that has a little caramel note but is mostly american Pale ale malt or 2 row. The hoppiness is definitely the main event but is least prominent in the middle. Still very hoppy and once again, It doesn't get much better than this.

Finish - Almost as good as aromas and better than the middle. Dank and sticky but still citrusy.

Overall - this is one of the best IPAs I've ever had and, as far as I'm concerned, it is a benchmark for it's style. IPA is my everyday style and the only one I consider myself knowledgeable in and this is world-class, without question.
