Notes / Commercial Description:
As craft beer pioneers, we embarked on an expedition to brew the benchmark West Coast IPA. We ventured into the unknown and struck gold, discovering a tantalizing menagerie of hops. Simcoe for tropical and grapefruit zest, Columbus for hop pungency, Centennial for pine notes, Citra for citrus zest and Cascade for floral aroma are layered throughout the brewing process. West Coast IPA® exemplifies the Green Flash spirit of adventure and discovery.

Best by: Unknown, as for some reason it was not printed on the label. Drank 11.11.14. Poured into a 12oz strange from a bomber.

A: Beautiful dark copper with next to zero visible carbonation. One and a half fingers of crackley, thick head, light khaki coloring, copious lacing with lasting retention. Eventually fades to a few thick islands.

S: Bouquet of hops... little bit of everything here. Grapefruit, mango, dank pine, lemon zest, a load of wildflowers, and malty caramel sweetness. Well composed, aromas blend extremely well.

T: Sweet and grassy. Very floral to start until the hops roll in and sweet bitterness sets in. This bomber might have tempered a touch as it was approximately 3 months old, as it was fairly well balanced for a big west coast DIPA. Big hops of course, but a significant amount of malt to mellow things out.

M: Quite resinous, leaves a slick of hop oil in its wake and doesn;t quite let up. The lingering bitterness is pleasant, not overwhelming in the least. Medium body, light carbonation, chewy in the mouth, no trace of alcohol whatsoever.

O: A well crafted DIPA, not one that makes me want to scream from the mountain tops extolling its virtues, but one that I will gladly have again. All kids of hoppy, without the palate scorch of other IPAs from the left coast.

Bottle poured into a BarrelHouse Brewing Co pint glass

A: Pours deep golden amber with copious amounts of frothy light tan head that settles and laces nicely.

S: Pine, some citrus, grapefruit and orange, maybe a touch of tropical fruit, some dankness, a little bit herbal, and a very light touch of malt.

T: Big citrus and pine hop hit up front with a little tropical, grapefruit dominates, but there is some tangerine/orange, light pineapple, and maybe even a touch of mango. Strong grapefruit rind bitterness throughout, some floral and herbal notes, but held together with a nice caramel malt backbone that comes out more as it warms.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation.

O: This is a classic west coast hop bomb. I wish it had a little less grapefruit bitterness, but still a great brew.

As a lover of both San Diego and the Green Flash Brewery the current quality of this previously excellent double IPA is a huge disappointment. I cannot put my finger on it. Perhaps I enjoy their Hop Head Red and Le Freak so much that the West Coast IPA no longer measures up. The malty taste of alcohol is too strong, yet the red copper color is still inviting. I avoid it in the store and grab it on tap only when other fine IPAs are not available. The aroma and taste are no longer as clean as it once was. Still a good beer, but no longer a stand out.

Bitter off taste from the hops. Not bad, but not good enough to buy again.
