Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.80%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
We explored 19th Century British Stout recipes, then charted a fresh course to land on a modern American version of the old-world classic. Our Double Stout encompasses the very best of both worlds. Golden naked oats, dark crystal and roasted malt offer a luscious balance of bittersweet chocolate and hints of coffee. Fair winds and following seas. Smooth sailing, all the way home.

Presentation: 1 pint 6 oz bottle into a snifter.

A- Wonderfully oily / black and opaque. Pours with ~3 fingers medium-brown head, which fades slowly, leaving a thin layer and some lacing.

S- Earthy start, then mellows into a nice, sweet chocolate/alcohol smell as the drink warms a bit.

T- A bit of chocolate, with a hoppy/bitter finish. Alcohol presence is fairly pronounced on the finish as well. A touch of dark fruit flavor emerges as the drink warms.

M- Rich, creamy, smooth...outstanding.

D- Pretty decent as a sipper. The only thing holding this one back for me the the slightly overly-boozy alcohol taste on the finish.

Future outlook: Repeat business likely.

Pours a black brew with a medium beige head with regular retention, aroma is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with caramel, vanilla, chocolate, alcohol and coffee, medium to robust bodied, flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a bittersweet finish, and quite tasty. Fine body with a long and smooth aftertaste of light barley and coffee. So very nice.

It looks thick pouring out! The last drops cling to the bottle and finally let go with an uncommon heft. Great head formation with a rocky espresso-like cap.

Smell is wonderfully full of roasted malts. Like smelling coffee beans. I'd rank the aroma right up there with the best imperial stouts I've had. Maybe a molasses note in there too. Hard to tell on hops with all that roast.

Taste doesn't disappoint. Full on roasty espresso flavor from start to finish. Body is creamy and slightly light on the finish. Drinkability is high for this style. A bit lighter than Yeti or Old Rasputin, but certainly as enjoyable. Chocolate, smoke, some bitterness....it's all working together nicely. Body is medium, and maybe a bit light for the style (but I'm not complaining...some times I don't want a full on 10% abv beer).

Glad I finally got to try this. Green Flash makes some nice beers and this one is another I'll be happy to have again some day.

surprised to see this one in the new 12oz bottles. but stoked. A bomber of this was always a bit much for me.

pours a rich dark oily near black with a frothy, dark brown two-finger head that has impressive retention and leaves behind snowflakes of sticky caramel lacing.

aroma of rich burnt chocolate cake, espresso roast, heavy malt. blackstrap molasses, burnt sugar. hints of vanilla and clove. smells impressive.

taste is rich, dark, and full of flavor. burnt caramel, interesting hoppy bitterness that plays perfectly into the dominant cocoa and dark malt flavors. hints of smoke. rich. more hops in the finish... one of the hoppier stouts for its richness. kinda diggin' it.

mouth is solidly carbonated and full. a touch slick and maybe a smidgen on the thin side to stand up to the flavor profiles. intense hop finish leaves a lingering bitterness that isn't the least bit offensive. but I like my stouts hoppy.

I could drink this one non stop. I think it easily stands up to the best imperial stouts out there. While a bomber was a bit much, I'm wishing I had more than the 12oz bottle. Time to go get more.
