Brewed by:
Green Flash Brewing Co.
California, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.80%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
We explored 19th Century British Stout recipes, then charted a fresh course to land on a modern American version of the old-world classic. Our Double Stout encompasses the very best of both worlds. Golden naked oats, dark crystal and roasted malt offer a luscious balance of bittersweet chocolate and hints of coffee. Fair winds and following seas. Smooth sailing, all the way home.

The beer comes out in a black color, a bit of ruby/brown coming through in the light. A surprisingly huge huge head in a mocha brown color.

The aroma has a wonderful sweet roasty malt, tons of chocolate, bittersweet, cocoa powder, a bit of coffee. A good amount of robust malt and oats in there, caramel sweetness too.

The flavor is just wonderfully complex and the mouthfeel is very full and luscious. At first, you’re getting that milk chocolate and cocoa powder. It then moves onto this molasses, dark toffee sweetness. Then onto this beautiful hoppy/roasty bitterness. Almost like a slightly overtoasted/burnt bread in giving you a tinge of bitterness, but not overpowering like some other imperial stouts. The bitterness balances with the sweetness wonderfully so that you want to dig in for more.

As it warms up, there’s a nuttiness that shines through, a tinge of dark fruit with dried plums.

A pleasant surprise and an underrated beer.

I bought a 4 pack...locally. Good to see GF in town.

Pitch black pour that brings a 2 finger head of tan foam. The foam is just sitting there, not shrinking at all, so I guess I'll have to drink some to check on the lacing. That's a + comment.

Nice notes of roasted malt, chocolate, and dark fruits in the nose. Mostly on the sweetish side but has some bitterness. No aroma of any of the biggish abv.

My, this is a chewy brew. I love the roasted malt character that brings some dark fruits, nice chocolate flavour, and a pretty strong roasted malt bitterness. The alcohol does come through more in the taste than the smell and at times, seems to dominate the taste. Fix that, and I think the brew would be up there in world class territory.

Big bodied with ample carbonation, the mouthfeel is fine.

Overall, it's a nice Imperial Stout. Just needs a bit of tweeking to get it where I'd want it to be.

I almost forgot...lacing is fine.
