Brewed by:
Green Flash Brewing Co.
California, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.80%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
We explored 19th Century British Stout recipes, then charted a fresh course to land on a modern American version of the old-world classic. Our Double Stout encompasses the very best of both worlds. Golden naked oats, dark crystal and roasted malt offer a luscious balance of bittersweet chocolate and hints of coffee. Fair winds and following seas. Smooth sailing, all the way home.

12oz Bottle from the Potsdam NY IGA for $3

Appearance - Dark brown colour with an average size frothy light brown head. I can't make out the amount of carbonation showing and there is some great lacing. The head lasted for around 5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, chocolate, coffee

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, chocolate and coffee. There is also quite a bit of a roasted/charred/burnt type flavour and a bit of vanilla.

Overall - Nice appearance and lots of roasted/burnt flavours - if that's what you're into. Not a whole lot on the nose though. The booze was well hidden. An above average Imperial Stout, but not up there with the best.

Coal-black body sporting a thick, rich, light brown head; plenty of lacing and rings on the glass. Mocha coffee and dark roasted malt grains with a touch of bitter chocolate and vanilla in the aroma. Rich chocolate flavors with a light astringency; soothing bitterness and a touch of alcohol. Very heavy, very smooth body.

Liquid black gold here! Bold presentation reinforced with delicious, bountiful spectrum of malt flavors. The hop bitterness tames the grain sweetness while the alcohol content remains in the background. Dark malts exude roasted grain and coffee character. An extremely tasty black ale heavy hitter...

A - Dark as night with a foamy mocha head. Sticky as hell - each drink produces window shade like up and down with the thin lace of chocolatey head.

S - Fresh brewed Coffee, malts, chocolate.

T - Big and rich smokey flavor to start, malty and balanced. As it comes to room temp, more of the roasted malts come to the forefront. Finishes with an anise bitter. Dry. This is a very drinkable 9% ABV.

O - Greenflash continues to impress - nicely crafted and complex Stout.

A- impenetrably black. Big foamy khaki head lasts and leaves nice lacing.

S- mostly dark chocolate and a hint of coffee.

T- big bitter roast malt. Nice flavor but nothing defining about it.

M- smooth but not all that thick.

O- a good stout but nothing overwhelming about it

Dark black with a robust two finger head that was slow to settle to a thick cap. Moderate amount of lacing is left down the glass.

The nose is the weakest part of this beer. A lot of alcohol with just a hint of dark chocolate. Really disappointing aroma.

A lot of alcohol in the flavor as well. Starts off a bit sweet before the booze and roasted malt overpower it in the finish. A tad harsh and not easy to drink. Notes of coffee and bitter chocolate.

The body is not the size I expect from an almost 9% ABV beer. The carbonation is great though and makes the most of the moderate body.

I expected so much more after hearing so many positive remarks and seeing the BA score. I like my big stouts to deliver more flavor than alcohol.
