Double StoutDouble Stout

Brewed by:
Green Flash Brewing Co.
California, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.80%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
We explored 19th Century British Stout recipes, then charted a fresh course to land on a modern American version of the old-world classic. Our Double Stout encompasses the very best of both worlds. Golden naked oats, dark crystal and roasted malt offer a luscious balance of bittersweet chocolate and hints of coffee. Fair winds and following seas. Smooth sailing, all the way home.

The Stout poured a pitch black with a substantial tan head. The aroma was full of roasted malts and maybe a trace of hops. The taste was deep and complex with layers of nuttiness, chocolate and coffee undertones and more of the roasted malt flavor. For such a foreboding brew it had a medium body that I found to be easy to drink despite the full flavor profile that enveloped my palate. This was a great stout that I could drink regularly.

12oz bottle poured into a large snifter. No bottling date to be found, but this bottle has been cellared for over a year.

A: Pours deep black. The coffee colored head settles very quickly. Wispy, jagged lines of lacing.

S: Heavy roast and char, lots of soot. Black cocoa powder and dry chocolate cake. Hopping is still very apparent even after a year in the bottle. Aggressive green and spicy hop scents, earthy wet leaves. Plum and black currant if one strains. French roast.

T: Creamed coffee, chocolate cake and brownies. The more heavily roasted malt tastes creep in with flavors of burnt crust, charcoal, and smoke. The hops have smoothed out more than the nose let on. they take on a supporting role and lend flavors of earthy leaves and mild pine needles. Plum and black currant lie deeply buried. Touch of warming alcohol. Finishes with dry chocolate cake and a touch of smoke.

M: Thick in body, though not all that weighty. Very whipped and airy in texture, delightfully creamy. Little carbonation. Prick of warming alcohol. Slight astringency. Smooth.

O: This is a very bold beer when consumed fresh. Time mellowed out the bite of the hops significantly, and the alcohol is now an afterthought. The texture in particular made this beer a delight to sip.

Coming in a short 12 FL. Oz. brown bottle, no freshness info. is provided on the beer label; served mildly chilled in GuldenDraak’s branded short-stemmed tulip-shaped sniffer. The beer label states “Double Stout” – “Black Ale”, which I guess means to suggest that this beer follows no specific style… hence a “Black Ale”?

A: pours a pitch black colour, coming with a very thick and frothy dark khaki head with good retention, while the carbonation level looks decent, constant but mild.
S: the aroma has upfront lightly metallic elements to pair with black malts, jammy dates, sweet vanilla, chocolate-coated coffee beans, light acidity and lively overripe pear-ish fruit esters; given a good swirl, a deep yet also 3 dimensional gristy and nutty dark maltiness with a pleasant touch of sweetness chime in, along with random notes as of leather, oat, crushed hazelnut, dark-coloured honey and even (faintly) musk fragrance.
T: smoothly carbonated, the entry shows again a little metallic edge on the side of the rather deep-flavoured, silky-smooth and not-at-all heavy gristy mixture of darker malts (presumably oat has rendered the extra smooth palate over here!); black stone-fruits and hop bitterness retreat to the place of the second fiddle, showing retrained undertones of coffee, bitter herbs, damson fruits, burned nuts, and earthy hints of English hops, before the flavour ends with a subtly spicy and mildly acidic note which lingers well in the aromatically malty finish.
M&O: the mouthfeel is wonderfully smooth, rounded, not heavy at any time, the flavour profile is sound and balanced, not like one’s usual super-charged hop bomb even in the guise of a huge wizardry black robe. Have I mentioned alcohol, by the way? If not, then it is because it’s just hidden too well… All in all, this is a delicious strong stout not in one’s “Imperial” fashion in any sense, but a rather balanced and approachable one.

Pours a deep black with ruby highlights. Large head of tan foam, and some beautiful lace.

Nose is milk chocolate -- very appealing!

Taste is strong, with a big chocolate taste. There is a little char underneath it all, but it's a subtle flavor. The high ABV is masked well here, too, and this is a superb, world-class double/imperial stout. I've yet to have a mediocre beer from the top-notch Green Flash!
