Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.80%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
We explored 19th Century British Stout recipes, then charted a fresh course to land on a modern American version of the old-world classic. Our Double Stout encompasses the very best of both worlds. Golden naked oats, dark crystal and roasted malt offer a luscious balance of bittersweet chocolate and hints of coffee. Fair winds and following seas. Smooth sailing, all the way home.

look: 4.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

Appearance: Black glass laughs at my feeble attempts to shine light through the back of it. Holds a solid finger and a half gloppy sticky foam head that looks like it will outlive me.

Smell: Dark malt, almost want to say extract but not really, just deep and rich barley with roasted notes that go a bit sweetened coffee.

Taste: Big flavor profile, starts sweet and malty, heavy deep and wide. The middle of the swallow shows a 'flash' of "green' hops, citric but not really bitter as there is so much malt to swim against, but brings it somewhere toward the middle before the flash fades and a rich sweet cold coffee, cocoa yummy finish lingers and encourages the next sip. It's almost like eating fudge batter.

Mouthfeel: Heavy body demands a good chew or two. Almost milkshake consistency, they didn't short anything in the malt bill.

Overall: Oh my. I've been overlooking this one as I thought the breweries specialty was the hop bombs, here they show they own the other side of the spectrum too. A lot of traditional Stout flavors, forgive me but there is even a slightly Guinness Foreign Extra sour note that really works well in the package.
Serious beer, I'll be picking up another.
Thanks to Illudium for the sample!

Velvet black coloring with a gorgeous glow. The head was deep dark brown with syrupy lacing and very good retention.

The scent was a dry chocolate with a touch of charred malt. Loads of marshmallow and smoky char there's a bit of coffee and toffee.

Creamy chocolate, marshmallow, charred sweet malt, a little caramel and toffee accompany a smoky coffee. The sweetness of the marshmallow and caramel malt seem prevalent and delicious.

The feel is creamy thick and full with limited carbonated sensation.

I've had this a couple of times and found this last experience to be outstanding.
