Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.80%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
We explored 19th Century British Stout recipes, then charted a fresh course to land on a modern American version of the old-world classic. Our Double Stout encompasses the very best of both worlds. Golden naked oats, dark crystal and roasted malt offer a luscious balance of bittersweet chocolate and hints of coffee. Fair winds and following seas. Smooth sailing, all the way home.

The beer pours a nice looking head that has a nice foamy brown color. The beer itself is a nice black color that has a nice sheen to it. It certainly looks like it has some weight to it.

The smell is what you expect from a stout. It has a nice strong roasted malt note mixed with some moderate chocolate and balanced by a moderate hop bitterness. It isn't overly complex or super fancy but it's still good.

The taste is very similar to the smell in that there is a strong roasted malt note mixed with chocolate and balanced with a moderate hop bitterness. The roast tends to linger a bit and moves into the aftertaste with a slight hint of chocolate..

The feel is good. It's a nice heavy bodied beer with a smooth feeling and the carbonation gives it a nice tingling feel to it.

Overall, this is a pretty good stout.. It isn't super complicated or extremely unique but it certainly gets the job done and then some. It's definitely one that you won't have regrets putting in regular rotation for colder weather.

Appearance: Utter black body, opaque to light, with a moderate, some what coarse tan head, with superb retention. Irregular tide marks adorn the glass walls.

Aroma: Deep and intense aroma of dark malt, cocoa, cold coffee and bitter chocolate. There are hints of vinous alcohol as well.

Taste: Opens with flavors of cold coffee, bitter cocoa, and burnt toast. There is an undercurrent of vinous alcohol as well. As the taste progresses, a slight burnt caramel sweetness is notable. Towards the finish, some earthy, but restrained hops present. Finishes with a lingering bitter cocoa and cold coffee flavor.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, very full and pleasant.

Drinkability/notes: An excellent, over-the-top example, well-suited to a cold and rainy autumn evening.

Presentation: Packaged in a custom-embossed short twelve-ounce brown glass bottle with a pry-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

Really smooth stout sampled at the beer temple in Amsterdam. Dark chocolate malt notes, tan head and a hint of Candi sugar?

Definitely bittersweet chocolate, lighter on the coffee, dark brown head, little lacing, but is definitely an Imperial. Try it. Imperial lovers will definitely be satisfied.

12 oz bottle. Best by 2016-05-08.

A: Opaque black. Poured 3 fingers high of head, medium short retention.
S: Chocolate. Somewhat coconut. A little vanilla and woody.
T: Intense chocolate, like cocoa milk. Medium low sweetness. Medium high bitterness. A little herbal. Dry finish.
M: Full bodied. Quite creamy.
O: Great stout! The creamy mouthfeel, the sweetness, and the strong chocolate flavor make it drinks like cocoa milk. Yet the relative high bitterness balances it really nice. Finally the alcohol content is not too high, given that there are many alcohol monsters in the style.

Poured opaque black with a thick tan head. Nice lacing. Aromas of coffee and roasted malt. The taste was well-balanced, with toast, coffee, chocolate, and a nice firm bitterness. Full-bodied with a great feel.

Very thick mouth feel, and with a strong lingering dark chocolate flavor that remains throughout the stout. I get some coffee, and really no bitterness.
