Lately I've been hearing all sorts of mixed reports about Green Flash, so I finally stumbled across a sixer of the Extra Pale Ale at a local shop and grabbed it. Pours a thin, but nice golden orange. Very crisp and clear in appearance. A two-finger head settles at first but thins out quickly. A slight trace of some lace as it drinks down. Nice aroma; floral hop scents with some pine and citrus hints. I was hoping for a bit more complexity in the aroma department, but it's not bad. The taste is okay, but not great. Hoppy, but a noticeable alcohol tinge that permeates the entire mouthfull, which is distracting. Again, I was hoping for more with the taste and mouthfeel. But still, this is a crisp, refreshing brew. I think it fits the "Extra" Pale Ale criteria, although I'm not sure I'd make it my weekend afternoon session beer. It's a solid effort by Green Flash, but nothing to write home about.

My first offering from Green Flash, poured a nice clear bright golden color with a well retain 1 1/2 finger head that settles slowley leaving a small amount of lace behind.Aroma seemed kinda off somewhat weak and almost skunky-like with only a light citrus note showing thru.A beer with no real identity flavor wise in my opinion rough hop edge somewhat herbal but just doesnt seem to come together well turning biscuity and lightly sweet in the finish but just nothing to bring it together.Iam glad I tried this beer but not impressed outside of the pour.I hope the west coast IPA is better.

This is a good all around west coast pale ale, but at the same time it is quite unoriginal. It poured a light amber color with a very small head that left little lace down the glass. Right off the bat it smelled like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, with the cascade hops and everything. The taste was allmost identical to SNPA only with a little more understated hop character. Now I love SNPA, but I had to rate this one a bit lower just because it is so simmilar and it seems like an allmost obvious copy.

As a San Diego resident, I want my local beers to succeed. But, I can not recommend this particular beer. Pours weak clear gold with a small white head. Weak hops and water aroma. Unsubstantial taste, bitter aftertaste. I'll stick to AleSmith Extra Pale from now on

* I foud out this was before Tom Nickel started helping these guys, so I will try this again.

Appears copper light orange hued with a bright white frothy head with very good retention leaves ample streaks of lacing. Aroma has grapefruit and other citrus tones with a biscuit doughy malt dose and somewhat of a peppery kick to it lastly detectable are some pine cone scented hops as well. Taste has a very Sierra Nevada Pale cloniness to it with a rolling pine cone citrus hop mix semi sweet doughy malt profile with a touch of nuttiness hops dominate...good ample bitterness for a refreshing pale like this one. Mouthfeel has somewhat of a frothy texture with good natural carbonation medium bodied pale ale with oily resins streaking across the palate. Drinkability is refreshing SoCal pale with nice upfront hoppiness, and biscuit malts blanced it out very nicely...good stuff I enjoyed.

Appearance - Golden cloudy hue with some nice lacing.

Smell - Citrusy (mostly orange) with some hops.

Taste - The orange comes through first and then very light hops.

Mouthfeel - Very thin and watery. Not much here to appreciate.

Drinkability - Based on the watery taste you could drink a lot of these but why would you want to?

Green Flash- Extra Pale Ale

A- Light yellowish orange, clear, lotsa bubbles, and a big thick sticky head. Good messy lacing.
S- Light touch of carmel malt and hoppy grapefruit rind.
T- Sweet honey malt with a light sweetened grapefruit rind hop finish.
M- Again sweet, with a light bitter hop bite in the end.

Overall- Actually quite good on a 95 degree day! Subdued flavors make this almost a chugger.

This offering from Green Flash is a nice looking APA. It pours a straw color with some texture with a lovely two finger head that has good retention and leaves an awful lot of lacing.

The bouquet is the weakest aspect of this brew. It is very thin, with only a few wafts of light pine aroma.

The flavor is dominated by crisp hops, lots of pine, some lemon rind, a touch of spice, and a hint of rye flavors (though I don’t think there are any rye malts in this beer). It finishes very dry with pleasant lingering hop bitterness.

Rather viscous, though the carbonation is defiantly notable on the palate, creating a nice soft fuzz.

On tap at Raleigh Times in Raleigh

A - hazy orangish copper with a big, soft, dense, white head that has great retention

S - There is literally no nose; if anything a very faint, floral aroma

T - faint bread, bitter, herbal, rather hoppy

M - medium bodied, crisp

This is a very easy to drink beer but it's rather one dimensional. It comes across a bit unbalanced and the hop character seems a bit unpredictable. I'll pass in the future.

Pours a hazy golden color topped by an inch or so of creamy, chunky bright white head. Not much in the way of aroma - a faint hint of light sweet malt and some fruity hops. Palate is significantly more subdued than the over-the-top hoppiness of this brewery's IPA. A good blend of light hops and light sweet malt. Body is well-carbonated and a touch creamy. Not particularly challenging, but a tasty brew.

A: rich clear golden with a frothy white head that leaves good lacing. Lots of lively bubbles rising the entire time feeding the cap that sits on top for the entire drink.

S: Mild grassy, leafy hops.

T: decent crisp hop bitterness, especially for a lighter beer. Bit of a dry finish.

M: lively, nothing wrong with it.

D: Pretty easy depending what mood you are in.

Pours honey colored with a fluffy white 2 fingers deep head. Pretty good lacing & good head retention

S: Floral hops & a slight grassyness

T: Floral & grapefruitty hops up front then a slight maltyness. Grassyness & more citric hops follow. Finishes with honey sweetness & too much grapefruitty hops

MF: Medium bodied & lightly carbonated, balances okay, skews a little too hoppy for the style to me

Drinks easy but not enough body to hold my attention. A nice upgrade to lawn mowing brews. This brewery loves their hops!

Poured into a pint glass yielding a mostly clear golden color and a thin head with decent lacing all the way through.

Distinctive medium hop floral smell with hints of orange citrus.

Taste and mouthfeel are very good. Clean and crisp flavor with initially elevated carbonation that tapers away through the glass. Finishes with a light malts.

Easy drinking and very refreshing medium bodied ale.

Pours a light gold with a huge white head. Strong orange flavors predominate the nose. Light hop character that lingers a bit longer than it should. medium-bodied. strongly carbonated. it's not a bad pale ale, but it's not particularly good either. lots of better stuff out there.

Very solid beer. I had a chance to try one at Mad Mex the other day. It doesn't have an overpowering taste but packs in enough hops to make it a great IPA.

It also has a great smell too it, it combines nicely with the taste as they work well together. A must try.

A: Poured a pale orange wit a nice 1 finger foamy, eggshell white head that retained beautifully leaving a spongy film lacing. Visible carbonation was light.

S: bright oranges and citrus that was very sharp and pronounced in nature. Smelled like old time country lemonade, aromatic and very pleasant.

T: The flavor was bright citrus and oranges, with some crisp pale malts. Some fresh lemony notes and a light flowery hopping are found on the finish. Crisp, very refreshing and a very good example.

M: light with some dried citrus hopping on the fade. Soft carbonation provides a nice mouthful.

D: Great drinkability by style 6 pack worthy at the least. A refreshing example and very good one at that.

A 12 oz bottle from a variety case purchased at Westy's.

A: The ale is an amber-orange color, slightly hazy (but there is no sediment) with a small head that laces intermittently.

S: The ale has a slightly spicy hop aroma that is overshadowed by a biscuity malt body.

T: The ale has a nice lightly spicy hop flavor that immediately lights up the taste buds. They are citrusy and short-lived. A grainy, thin malt body follows that has some caramel and a bit of toffee chewiness.

M: The mouthfeel is highlighted by the softer maltiness. It allows the hops to come through in a bigger manner.

D: The drinkability is bolstered by a clean finish, good for a round or two.

Pours a gold color with good clarity. Creamy surface to the foam, and some little bits of lace. Grassy aroma with a prominent malt character that beats out the hops. Taste has the mild grassy hop bitterness too, but pale malt flavors are the main focus. Light honey sweetness is chased by a mild bitterness in the aftertaste. Good level of carbonation and an overall easy drinker. Summertime session ale that competes directly with SNPA.

Bottle courtesy of Wickedpete: Poured a deep golden color ale with a nice foamy head with good retention and some nice lacing. Aroma of crisp dry hops with some light bitterness. Taste is a nice mix between some crisp hops with light bitterness and a medium sweet malty body. Full body for the style with some good carbonation. Very refreshing and well balance for the style.

A "Beer of the Month" selection. I'm surprised it's a January (Winter) selection because this is definitely not a "winter" beer. Bright, cloudy yellow color in the glass (almost looks like an American Wheat) with a definite citrus (lemon?) scent in the nose. Taste is mostly hops but with a strong citrus (a la "Fresca") aftertaste. Very refreshing in a "lawnmower" sort of way. Would go great with a lemon or orange slice on the rim of the glass. Don't get me wrong, it's actually a great beer, but obviously intended for the summer BBQ crowd. Then again, it's from San Diego where it's summer all year long. Oh, and one other question... wasn't the Green Flash a comic book superhero?
