It’s been a few weeks since Green Flash hit the shelves in Indiana, but I still get excited when I see their beer at the liquor store. Cheers!

Brewed 05/14/13, or three months before the date of this tasting.

A: Perfect look for a saison: chunky white head two inches high above a translucent, pale gold body that’s teeming with carbonation. The retention is so good that I’ll have to drink past the foam if I ever want to get a taste.

S: A tart, lemony nose with a bright yeast quality, ripe with notes of sourdough bread, coriander, and floral soap. The light character peaks in a flinty, metallic tone, like well water.

T: Dim, faded hop tastes of lime and white pepper open what proves to be an uneventful palate. Orange zest, straw, and mild banana fill out the remainder, with a bready, metallic finish.

M: For a fizzy, Belgian-style beer, this leaves a lot to be desired in the mouthfeel. The carbonation is abundant, but very weak – like soda bubbles – and the body is light as light can be.

O: It seems like Green Flash was trying to make a session saison, and I commend them for that; we need more low-alcohol Belgian-style beers from American brewers. Unfortunately, this is way too watery to be satisfying.

Served on pint in a tulip glass

Appearance – The beer is served a light golden yellow color with one finger of foamy white head. The head fades slowly over time leaving a wonderful level of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer Is mainly of a citrus lemon and light bready smell mixed with aromas of yeast and a bit of spice of clove and coriander. Along with these aromas are some smells of hay and a bit of a grassy smell mixing with a little bit of a pear and apple sweetness to round out the aroma.

Taste – The taste begins with a light biscuit flavor mixed with some flavors of lemon citrus upfront. As the flavor advances, some light yeast tastes greet the tongue. The yeast brings some spice along with it, bringing to the tongue some flavors of clove and coriander. The taste takes on some wheat and light fruit flavors along with a light grassy and earthy flavor at the end of the taste to leave a rather light and crisp flavor on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is very light and thin with a carbonation level that is slightly above average. The body is actually a little too thin for the brew even at its low abv., never really allowing any of the flavors time to linger on the tongue.

Overall – While it was quite light and rather crisp it was a little weak in flavor and a little too watery for a saison for my taste. Just OK.

A-golden with a thin white head

S-buttery corn and some tartness and Belgian grains. Strong scent.

T-comes in how it smells except with more of a grassy aspect. It's pretty good actually. The smell was fake, but this has more genuity to it. It's not as strong as the scent though, more mellow. Matching after-taste.

M-heavy dry carbonation, dry finish

O-easy drinking saison. Fairly mellow though, which I guess is expected from the abv. I'm not a fan of the corn flavor it has.

The beer is a golden straw yellow with light foamy white head. Nice webbed lacing and slightly hazy. Beer smells faintly spiced with clove and grains of paradise. A bready scent mixes in with some dank yeast.

Upon sipping the spices are far more evident and a little overpowering in my opinion. Too much grains of paradise. The interesting yeast scent doesn't appear much once sipping, which would have been more interesting. Mouthfeel is light, very drinkable and carbonation comes off being fizzy.

Nt my favorite from a brewery I often enjoy. Reminiscent of Sam Adam's summer ale.

Bottle from Whole Foods

A clear, glowing clear straw yellow with a dense, white head with excellent retention and nice lacing, this is a great saison. The nose is bright, light and refreshing. Citrus, pear esters, a little apple, some ginger and a faint note of yeast and phenols are present. The palate is bone dry and with a clean, pils malt base with crackers, a pleasant blend of citrus, light fruit and a touch of yeast. While it is lacking the phenols and yeast character that defines the style, this is enjoyable. Light in body with a crisp, zippy carbonation, this is quite excellent.

Clear golden straw with a frothy white head that lingers. Effervescent bubbles surface constantly.

Confectioners sugar sweetness, wet hay, white pepper, and what form the initial aroma, with hints of pear adding complexity.

Fairly dry throughout, with pear and apple esters at the base, on a bed of grainy malt. The finish is peppery and a touch bready. Lacks a bit in substance. Minerally qualities surface late.

Body is fairly light, with high carbonation and a slightly tannic finish.

A bit weak in character. Has the dryness and spiciness of a saison, but it's missing the intangibles.
