I had this super fresh when it first came out at Beer Revolution in Oakland on tap. I sorta liked it, but overall my impression is that this is too heavy on the hops and too light on the herbal and fresh Saison notes. You end up getting something more like a slightly watered down white IPA rather than a Saison. Oh well.

Beer #2 for Thanksgiving! Friendship Brew. Poured this one into a Rodenbach Grand Cru tulip.

Achieved a mega-sized latte-colored head with craggy lacing and variable bubble sizes. Mind you, this beer is surely black. Has a thinner, softer black look to it. Looks marvelous in this glass.

Lovely spiced aroma of cardamom, wintergreen, licorice, and clove with a lively farmhouse yeast nose center. Smells very sweet, however. Very much the nose of an herbal elixir. Someone nailed it in a past review when they said Ricola cough drop. Actually picking up a bit of eucalyptus, also.

So nutso for a beer! A saison, sure enough, with tangy Belgian yeast strains and tart pomme fruits. Very herbal with loads of spices added. Notably, wintergreen, clove, star anise, spearmint, mace, and black pepper. Eucalyptus isn't a stretch, either. Medicinal tasting with some West Coast hopping at work in the background. A little spruce and a little citrus peeking through the blackening. Mentholated and sweet. Finishes decent, with lemon and grapefruit notes revealing themselves. Keep in mind, this isn't hoppy. It's just overloaded with busy flavors. But, after all, it almost works. Nothing particularly clashes. You just have to be into all of those medicinal flavors that can be so imposing here. Honestly, this is pretty well-done. I must say it's pretty tasty.

Very smooth in the mouth. Lighter-bodied, but the carbonation isn't accelerating much neither. The low alcohol level doesn't rear into the taste, it just kind of paces with you, unless you drink it too quickly (as I'm doing)... probably, because I'm enjoying it.

Looks great, smells interesting, then you taste it... a full-blown spiced black saison. Far from being short on flavor. This beer is a dream for a geek who loves experimental winter seasonals. A must try, in that regard. However, as a farmhouse ale, there are so many better and purer examples. I'm sure both Green Flash and St. Feuillien were happy with this product, and as it turns out, I am too.

Strong aroma has a malty core and firm floral and herbal notes, including a firm coriander tone. Pours a warm coffee brown with a thick, foamy and rather persistent tan head. Flavor has roast barley, herbal, floral and woody notes. The herbal component is on the strong side, perhaps a mite too strong. I like coriander flavoring in beer, but not too much! It leaves a woody, herbal, slightly malty finish. Fairly smooth texture has decent body and fizz. Let’s drink a toast to friendship between craft breweries!

Having reviewed this on tap, I realized I have a bottle in the fridge. There's not much difference, but it's noted where there is.

The look is pretty much the same out of the bottle as I saw from the tap. It is, again, as black as a "black saison" could be, and crowned by a thick, fat tan head 1 1/2 to 2 fingers high and sturdy. It drops strong, creamy lacing on the glass as the beer recedes.
Nothing changes in the smell or taste; stillthe strongest smell I get is mint basil. It seems to be a mix of the minty character of the hops and the strong herbal notes. It's also floral and piney. I don't quite get the balance from malts that I get in the flavor which, again, strongly reminds me most of mint basil but lets things play together as more floral (almost perfume-like), toast, pine, and a touch of roasty sweet notes come into play. There's no question the not-quite-funky but herbal and earthy characters of a saison are here, with a bit more in play.
The feel is where this beer deviates just a little. It's still got a medium body,but as the dryness pulls out more, it still has crispness but loses a bit of the smoothness. Carbonation still brings out a little of that creaminess, but it fades off. As it dries out, I get slightly more of a chalkiness in the dry finish.

Poured from a 650ml bottle. Pours a black colour with a big tan head. The nose is a crazy mix of sour funk, herbal botanicals (anise/licorice) and saison yeast notes. On the palate it's very dry with notes of dry cocoa powder, Jaegermeister, funk and spice. The finish has lots of palate drying tannins and bitterness. Medium bodied. A very unique brew.

A: The beer is very dark brown (near black when viewed from afar) and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high dense tan head that has very good retention properties and left lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: There are light to moderate aromas of Belgian yeast and herbs in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and also has hints of roasted malts and spices.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and a little airy on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. The finish has some dryness.
O: This is quite an interesting beer that seems to share some properties of an Irish Dry Stout (from the roasted malts) and a Scottish Gruit (from the herbs).

Picked this up at Gomer's in Parkville, MO...

Pours black with 3 plus fingers of mocha colored head. Very good head retention & lacing

S: Dark fruit, pears, some funkyness

T: Green apple peelsa touch of roastyness, black currants& some grapefruit up front. More green appleskins as this warms, some astringent notes, & grapefruit peel, some anise as well. Finishes with a hint of funk, roastyness, a bit of plum & black currants, some dryness & brown bread

MF: Medium bodied, slight carbonation

A pretty interesting take on the style, I liked it, didn't love iit

A: pours brown, really didnt see this coming. in the mood for a nice blond saison and this is what i get. ah, the review must go on! (well maybe i should read the whole label, cause it does clearly state "black saison" on the bottom) head is plentiful and the retention is good. great lacing as well.

S: minty and juniper. a little bit of licorice. the spice covers up any malt or hop aroma imo.

T: a little barnyness on this brew here. slightly tart. roasted notes as well. dries things out very quickly. a little bit of hay lingers on the finish, but not for long.

M: moderate amount of fizz. medium bodied.

D: interesting brew. very heavily spiced, which takes center stage. the barnyness on the body is solid and well appreciated. maybe its my own fault, but i definitely expected a little more from these two breweries working together.

Pours very dark brown, good thick lasting head of foam. Lacing abound. Roasted smell, some pine. A touch funky. Taste is all at once an oaty fruity coffee. Fascinating blend. Some bitterness holds. Like a porter with an alter ego. Firm mouthfeel. Really good.

A: Quite black with a cocoa-colored, bubbly, froth head; lacing is really nice

S: Spicy and fruity: bananas, cloves, apples, pepper, rosemary, anise; also bready and a touch of chocolatey; a strange but strangely appetizing blend of aromas

T: Grassy herbal flavors mingle with spicy fruity flavors: subtle anise, mint, grass, banana, cloves; this is weird but unlike most of the review, I like this

F: Sticky, medium body; good mouth feel

O: Strange. But a really interesting beer nonetheless: roasty, spicy, grassy, herbaly; frankly, though, I like it

Style: Dark Saison

LOOK: Dark brown in color with a mocha cream head and active carbonation rising to the surface. Leaves plenty of lace, looking like a well hopped brew.

SMELL: Herbs, roasted malts, hops, musty basement and band aid.

TASTE: Very earthy and spicy with a roasted malt base. Notes of peppercorns, sage, anise, lemongrass and grapefruit rind are strong in the taste. Has a small earthy tartness and a good dose of hops. Fairly bitter, which works well with the other strong flavors.

FEEL: Medium bodied, very smooth and only slightly dry for the style.

OVERALL: An interesting take on the Saison style. Earthy, herbal, and pretty nice all in all.

Dark brown color with an incredible caramel head with great retention and leaving lots of laces. So this is a Dark Saison.
Refreshing funky aroma with a pleasant lemon tartness, Belgian yeast, spices and just a hint of cocoa powder.
Very original flavor, notes of coffee, a good deal of earthy and herbal hops, tons of spices (ginger, pepper, cloves, cardamon, so many that is hard to really say it for sure), anise, mint, pumpkin, licorice, green apple, finishing with a lemony tartness and dark chocolate.
Medium body with good carbonation, a bit effervescent.
Love or hate beer. Surprising taste, I was expecting the same usual average Saison taste; it actually reminded me of Jägermeister liquor with its medicinal flavor with Mexican mole! I found it much more interesting than most beers of its style, but it is definitely not for everyone, which may be the reason why this brew is underrated.

Green Flash Friendship Brew has an enormous, soapy, light brown head and a very dark brown (essentially black) appearance, with brown highlights in evidence on the edges as light hits the glass. Lots of lacing is left behind. The aroma is of spices (white pepper?) and dark bread crust, with an underlying sweetness. Taste is of white pepper, other odd spices of some sort, black bread, and there is a wall of bitterness at the back end of the sip. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Green Flash Friendship Brew finishes dry, mellow, peculiar, and easy drinking. Overall, even though it’s a strange beer, it’s still quite nice.

A: Poured from the bomber into aDuvel tulip glass. Body is black with a 2-finger milkshake-colored, fairly dense head - looks more like a stout or American porter than anything. Good rings of lace.

S: Florally, perfumey hops over a touch of coffee beans and chocolate. Hint of spice.

T: Spice shows up more prominently in the taste. Malty stuff is there too: slightly burnt toast and char, a touch of dark chocolate or bakers chocolate and molasses. Finishes dry, with a lingering taste of char and bitter, roasted coffee beans. Also some spice towards the back end that I'm having a hard time pinning down - maybe ginger? For some reason "wood" comes to mind. . . . Overall this one drinks like a cross between a porter and a saison.

M: Medium in heft, carbonation is active but non-obtrusive .

O: Good stuff. An interesting collaboration beer that actually seems like a collaboration - i.e., a blending of different styles into something new and unique, marrying elements from both brewers. Here, I get San Diego and Belgium. Neat.

A - A dark brown/black with zero clarity. Lots of tan head and sticky lace left all over the glass all the way down

S - Mild barnyard funk, dried fruit and berries

T - Wow, all sorts of things going on in the taste. Nutmeg, berries, cocoa, smokiness, belgian funk, with

M - Well carbonated and somehow, with all thats going on in it, well balanced.

O - Never had one like this before. Lots of flavors and funkiness, but somehow it works. Well done!

A: This poured an opaque black with fluffy tan head.
S: It smelled like allspice and clove, with some pumpkin bread and grassy hops and horse blanket.
T: It tasted like grassy hops and allspice and pumpkin bread, with some clove and copper and horse blanket. It had a clean and funky and earthy aftertaste.
M: It was fairly thick with lots of carbonation. Nice full body.
D: This was a nice spicy beer, perfect for the holidays. The scent and taste were complex and enjoyable, and the body was fitting. The finish was smooth too, so it was easy to drink. Nice unique brew (surprisingly better than the black saison collaboration with Stone, Evil Twin, and Stillwater).

S - anise, roasted malts, sage

T - anise, citrus, sage, bitter finish, some other spices that I can't put my finger on

M - medium to full bodied, well carbonated

This doesn't resemble a traditional saison, but it's unique and tasty. I'm a huge fan of the herbal notes. I wouldn't have expected these flavors to have all worked together so well. This isn't my favorite "saison", but I give it bonus points for uniqueness. It's definitely worth a try especially if you're a fan of herbs in beer.

A- pours a deep black with a velvity two fingers of dark tan head. Great retention with good lacing.

S- beautiful blend of roasted malt, spice and anise. A kiss of leafy floral hop in the middle. Yeast spice on the finish.

T- rustic dark bready malt envelopes the palate at first. The spice kicks in with mint, anise and nutmeg.touch of floral hop with a lingering roast character on the finish.

MF- sharp mouthfeel with a medium body. Expressive carbonation.

D- good drinkability.

Overall a very unique beer.

Poured a deep dark brown with a huge thick and creamy head, long lasting and tons of lacing.

The smell is loaded with spices I especially get a nice blast of ginger.

The flavor is very nice, with dry cocoa and ginger along with a light smokey roasted malt and a long lasting earthy bitterness.

The mouthfeel is both oily and dry. It has a thick resiny hop quality to it along with a long dry finish.

This beer is very easy to drink, nice and flavorful, like a well done spiced porter.

Bottled 8-7-12

A--Opaque brown/black with beige, bubbly, one-inch head. Good lacing considering large bubbles in head broke down quickly.

S--Subtle, earthy herb like sage or thyme.

T--On the bitter side, which I like, especially in the finish, which I also like. I can't quite figure out what the dominant flavor is, but it's there, and it will pretty much determine whether you like this beer. It is like molasses spiced with something like cloves, but I could be way off. Overall this is not a sweet beer, and the hops manage to shine through everything else.

M--Crisp, strong carbonation, but with touch of syrupiness. Nice.

O--I think it's an excellent fall brew--not too dark, or too cloying like many other fall oktoberfest beers. Nice Cali-Belgium collaboration.

Enjoyed chilled from a cervoise

A- black w/full thick cream ringlets of lace cling w/ translucent clarity

S-very spicy pine tinged and ginger like tropical earthy nose w/ herbal yeasty blend of scents
M- really spicy w/ highly effervescent and mostly dry feel w/ light bitter and semi tangy yeast feel

T- flavor has slight orange rind w/ mild astringent taste w/ piney hops and roast notes w/ acrid dark roast coffee w/ a tropical yeast which has Belgian earthiness and slight ginger bite w/ mild black tea-like herbal astringency

O- a very tasty dark Saison w/ lots of hops and spice emphasis w/out an abundance of peppery phenolic which is pleasant

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark brown color and a thick texture. There was an inch and a half of foamy, off white, long-lasting head. Great lacing.

S: A nice aroma of hops, yeast, and some spices.

T: A very interesting flavor for this beer: Lots of hops - way more than I expected considering the style - but also a good amount of yeast, light spices, and a floral quality. Didn't have the funk you expect in a saison. Certainly not your typical saison flavor, but still very tasty.

M: A well-carbonated beer with a super dry finish. Medium-bodied.

O: An unusual beer, but well worth checking out. Drinkable.

Appearance: Poured into a tulip is a beer that is quite dark. On top is a dark beige head two fingers thick.

Aroma: Musty, black licorice, lots of spice, band aid, yeasty, light coriander and some faint cinamon.

Taste: Tons of spice in the front and lots of dryness on the palate. Black licorice, yeasty, coriander, light tones of cinamon, band aid.

Notes: A great Saison nice and dry. Cheers.

Pours a dark brown with a huge brown head into my glass. Brown on brown, what else? I personally love collaboration brews.

The aroma consists of a great mash-up of American and European hops (citrus, pine and grass come to mind) with spicy belgian yeast. Label description is spot-on.

Chewy, grassy citrus hop essence mated to spicy yeast. That's all I can really say. I'm used to saisons/farmhouse ales being "bright and airy". This is neither but it's still darn tasty!

Lingering hop/spice at the back of the tongue. Very mellow. The low ABV helps too and the roasted malt adds a new dimension.

A black saison? New style? One-off? Either way, check it out! If you like St.Feuillien and Green Flash, well, there you go!

A- black with some tannish head... good head retention with lacing

S - Lots of herbal spices, rosemary, thyme, SAGE with some sweet belgian tones

T - Lots of herbal spices with great hops, the dark malts provide a good balance to this herbal spice hop blend(more mild and earthy)

M - medium body with medium carbonation, a good spice aftertaste

O - What a unique beer, really tasty, not for all but really good!
