12oz Bottle from Party Source Syracuse NY for $3.50

Appearance - Dark brown colour with a large size fizzy light brown head. I can't make out the amount of carbonation showing and there is some good lacing. The head lasted for 2-3 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, chocolate, grains, anise, lemons, smokey/burnt notes

Taste & Mouth - There is an above average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, chocolate, and coffee. There are also some smokey/burnt notes, anise, and a bit of a graininess and some sour citric flavours. It ends with a tart yet smokey aftertaste.

Overall - Can't say I've ever had a beer quite like this one. It's like a kitchen sink type of beer - everything has been thrown in. I can see how some would say this is a mess, but I can appreciate the uniqueness. Not something I'd rush out to get more of, but well worth a try to see how far the limits of beer can be stretched.

A-Did not know it was a black Saison. Pours very dark with a light white head. Light struggles to get through.

S-Oh no. Burnt rosemary? Anise. Spicy and herbal. Cooking spices. Yeasty and toasty.

T-A burnt arrangement of cooking spices. Menthol. Not even close to appetizing.

M-Dreaded each sip.

O/D-Bad.

Lovely tan head and foamage. This thick film of foam lasts for all twelve ounces. Like the oil black color and even some sticky lacing.

Spicey and roasty herbal aromas. Roasted malt acts as the backbone for the herbal spices one would often find in a more standard saison.

Herbal and roasted flavors abound from start to finish. Hints of coffee mixing with chammomile, sage, maybe lavender. Palate is dry and the finish is a bitter herbal flavor. This was a fun and interesting beer to try.

Pours an opaque black color with a solid half inch mocha head that lingers.

Sweet tarts, hay, and barnyard funk lead the aroma, with floral and perfumey/medicinal notes adding complexity. There's a subtle sweet roast malt character underneath.

Flavor is very phenolic, with medicinal and rubbery notes overtaking the flavor, carrying into a bitter, very dry finish. Tastes like robitussin with enough barnyard flavor to almost make it drinkable...almost. There's a little sourness, a bit fruity, if you can get past the phenols. Spicy notes surface as it warms, with chamomile, cardamom, and clove providing respite. The roast, burnt character of the malt comes out more, as well, and the medicinal tones subside somewhat.

Body is on the light side, with high carbonation and a bit of roast astringency.

Overall, as with the rayon vert, the medicinal and plastic phenols detract from the experience. The spice phenols are not strong enough to dominate. I'm apparently sensitive to 'bad' phenols, though, so some people may enjoy this more than I. It improves as it warms...so much so that I'd recommend ordering one and leaving it sit 20 minutes or so.

Even though I paid $1.75 for this I still feel cheated. Color is that of a stout with no inescapable light and a 1/4 inch of deep mocha head. For some reason I wanted this to smell like a Black IPA but alas little to no hops in the nose just mint, anise, and a touch of coriander. Taste is only mildly palatable and makes me wonder why they even bottled this monstrosity. Burn rosemary, deep black anise (which isn't terrible but not great) and a mildly fruity yeast in the finish. Mouthfeel isn't that terrible giving me a medium chewy body much bigger than I would expect for such a low ABV Saison.

Overall this beer is pretty much a fail in the sense of friendship. It made me hate green Flash all over again (still can't drink west coast IPA it taste like soap)

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark brown color and a thick texture. There was an inch and a half of foamy, off white, long-lasting head. Great lacing.

S: A nice aroma of hops, yeast, and some spices.

T: A very interesting flavor for this beer: Lots of hops - way more than I expected considering the style - but also a good amount of yeast, light spices, and a floral quality. Didn't have the funk you expect in a saison. Certainly not your typical saison flavor, but still very tasty.

M: A well-carbonated beer with a super dry finish. Medium-bodied.

O: An unusual beer, but well worth checking out. Drinkable.

Pours a dark brown with a huge brown head into my glass. Brown on brown, what else? I personally love collaboration brews.

The aroma consists of a great mash-up of American and European hops (citrus, pine and grass come to mind) with spicy belgian yeast. Label description is spot-on.

Chewy, grassy citrus hop essence mated to spicy yeast. That's all I can really say. I'm used to saisons/farmhouse ales being "bright and airy". This is neither but it's still darn tasty!

Lingering hop/spice at the back of the tongue. Very mellow. The low ABV helps too and the roasted malt adds a new dimension.

A black saison? New style? One-off? Either way, check it out! If you like St.Feuillien and Green Flash, well, there you go!

22oz. Damn opaque black pour, a frothy light tan head on top. Just a minute lacing.

Aroma, an earthy sage like spice is pretty heavy. Some citrus and yeasty notes.

Taste, kind of an odd mix of funk and Italian blend spice. Some citrusy notes. A nice herbal bitter finish. Some toast and dainter cocoa as well. There just isn't a whole lot of malt presence here.

Light bodied. Enough carbonation, could use maybe a tick more. Drink easy enough. Feels like if the malt bill was upped just a bit this could have just a little more. But really a pretty good example of the style, just not as interesting as some of the other black saisons.

Inky balck with a big, rocky, tan head. Great head retention.

Interesting combination of aromas. Roast, earth, pine, juniper, coriander.

Roast dryness and lots of earthy spice. Lightly sweet malt. I don't like the way some of the herbs play in here as it doesn't seem to work.

Medium body with moderate carbonation. Fine.

An okay beer but the flavours don't seem well integrated to me with the herbal notes just not working.

Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass

Appearance –Served a black colored brew with a small tan head. The head faded quite fast, leaving a nice amount of lacing on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a roasted malt mixed with spices of coriander and clove. Some pepper aromas as well as some funky aroma are mixed in as well giving it a odd roasted and funked saison kind of smell.

Taste – The flavor begins with a strong dose of roasted malt mixed with a small amount of a citrus taste. Spices of pepper and clove are rather heavy up front. While the spices dwindle toward the end they remain ever present in the taste. A herbal and grassy flavor comes to the tongue at the middle to the end. These flavors take the taste to its end where a roasted and lightly bittered grass/herb flavor is left to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel- The body of the beer was on the medium side in terms of its creaminess with a carbonation level that was average as well. Both were a good compromise for the roasted body of the beer and the more funky and spicy flavors.

Overall – A fairly interesting beer in my opinion. While the flavors don’t meld perfectly at all times they make for an interesting combination and style. While it isn’t one I would go to on any real occasion, it is a good one to try.

Strong aroma has a malty core and firm floral and herbal notes, including a firm coriander tone. Pours a warm coffee brown with a thick, foamy and rather persistent tan head. Flavor has roast barley, herbal, floral and woody notes. The herbal component is on the strong side, perhaps a mite too strong. I like coriander flavoring in beer, but not too much! It leaves a woody, herbal, slightly malty finish. Fairly smooth texture has decent body and fizz. Let’s drink a toast to friendship between craft breweries!

Nose shows slight roast along with an unmistakable tang and some spice that I can't pick. Interesting.
Same story with the flavours: wierd spices and some roasty malt along with the same tang again.
Carbonation is spot on at least.

Dark brown color with an incredible caramel head with great retention and leaving lots of laces. So this is a Dark Saison.
Refreshing funky aroma with a pleasant lemon tartness, Belgian yeast, spices and just a hint of cocoa powder.
Very original flavor, notes of coffee, a good deal of earthy and herbal hops, tons of spices (ginger, pepper, cloves, cardamon, so many that is hard to really say it for sure), anise, mint, pumpkin, licorice, green apple, finishing with a lemony tartness and dark chocolate.
Medium body with good carbonation, a bit effervescent.
Love or hate beer. Surprising taste, I was expecting the same usual average Saison taste; it actually reminded me of Jägermeister liquor with its medicinal flavor with Mexican mole! I found it much more interesting than most beers of its style, but it is definitely not for everyone, which may be the reason why this brew is underrated.

Having reviewed this on tap, I realized I have a bottle in the fridge. There's not much difference, but it's noted where there is.

The look is pretty much the same out of the bottle as I saw from the tap. It is, again, as black as a "black saison" could be, and crowned by a thick, fat tan head 1 1/2 to 2 fingers high and sturdy. It drops strong, creamy lacing on the glass as the beer recedes.
Nothing changes in the smell or taste; stillthe strongest smell I get is mint basil. It seems to be a mix of the minty character of the hops and the strong herbal notes. It's also floral and piney. I don't quite get the balance from malts that I get in the flavor which, again, strongly reminds me most of mint basil but lets things play together as more floral (almost perfume-like), toast, pine, and a touch of roasty sweet notes come into play. There's no question the not-quite-funky but herbal and earthy characters of a saison are here, with a bit more in play.
The feel is where this beer deviates just a little. It's still got a medium body,but as the dryness pulls out more, it still has crispness but loses a bit of the smoothness. Carbonation still brings out a little of that creaminess, but it fades off. As it dries out, I get slightly more of a chalkiness in the dry finish.

A: This poured an opaque black with fluffy tan head.
S: It smelled like allspice and clove, with some pumpkin bread and grassy hops and horse blanket.
T: It tasted like grassy hops and allspice and pumpkin bread, with some clove and copper and horse blanket. It had a clean and funky and earthy aftertaste.
M: It was fairly thick with lots of carbonation. Nice full body.
D: This was a nice spicy beer, perfect for the holidays. The scent and taste were complex and enjoyable, and the body was fitting. The finish was smooth too, so it was easy to drink. Nice unique brew (surprisingly better than the black saison collaboration with Stone, Evil Twin, and Stillwater).

Thanks to Momar42 for the bottle! 22 oz bottle poured into a beer mug.

A: Pours a extremely dark brown color that manages to be completely opaque in spite of being less than pitch black. The head is a two finger light mocha color with an almost stout like consistency and texture. Thank cripes this isn't a total foamer the way Rayon Vert was. As the head recedes, plenty of lacing patches stick around.

S: Decently complex, with notes of peppermint, chocolate, grassiness, coriander, funk, phenols, and apples...but there's a cherry cough syrup note that's distractingly hard to shake. Otherwise, it's fairly reminiscent of a fresh cut lawn in a manner.

T: Other reviews are noting this as being 'medicinal', and I'm inclined to agree with them. Flavor-wise, it opens plasticky and slightly harsh. It isn't horribly unpleasant, but it hurts an otherwise solid profile. On the upside, I love the finish of this (at first) - it's full of roasty, bitter coffee.

Come to think about it, once it warms up sufficently, it goes from a 3 to about a 1.5, thanks to the emergence of some cherry flavors - combined with a mere modicum of sweetness, it makes this taste like glorified cherry cough syrup. A textbook example of a trainwreck, plain and simple.

M: Silky smooth and soft yet somehow dry, crisp, and prickly. The actual feel, carbonation, and texture is quite good, it's just the flavor that sucks.

O: Let's chalk this one up as a 'failed experiment', shall we? The medicinal flavors pretty much kill any chances of this being an enjoyable drink. It was fine (but unremarkable) when drunk at a cold temperature, but became pretty nasty as it warmed up. Stay away from this one, I had to drain pour about 3/8ths of this.

Served from bottle into a sampler shaker. Poured a massively dark brown with a half finger light tan head. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, earth, herbal, and potpourri. The flavor was of sweet malt, herbal, earth, medicinal, and toasted malt. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a decent brew. While I can say that there were things I liked about this brew, there were also things I did not like as well. I did like the sweet and earthy aspect going on. However, I did not like the herbal and medicinal part at all. Even with the sweetness going on, it did nothing to cover up the dislikes to make it a good brew. I really went into this one expecting good things, but I was slightly letdown. Worth trying if you get the chance to judge for yourself, but I doubt I would personally buy a bottle to drink to the face.

The beer pours a dark brown colour. Head is over-generous but beautiful, sinking slowly to form a marshmallowy lump on the top - lacing left behind is gorgeous, beige and sticky. Looks fantastic.

Smells strongly funky, with a rich, comforting dark roastiness. Strong star anise notes as well, a touch of nutmeg and maybe some fennel. Spice has a slight sour note to it, and could use maybe some more sweetness on the nose. Just a tad overdone on the spice to make it keel off-balance.

Taste is slightly more in balance. Roastiness underlies it all, slight char note with light coffee grounds. Spice is there too - anise, clove and some pepper. Still has that slight sour, raw spice kind of flavour, unbridled, but the roast malt makes a decent complement.

Thinnish feel; no real presence in the mouth. A little bland, but OK for the palate that goes along with it.

If it were stronger it might make a more interesting blend, or if there were more Belgian yeast notes, too. The spice is the dominant figure throughout, and the beer seems a bit uninteresting in what it does with it.

Beer is black with a moderately-sized tan head. Head fades fairly quickly. Some lace.

Smell contains spices, along with roasted malt and ginger. Fairly weak smell.

Lots of spice in the taste. Cardamom sticks out for me, also white pepper and ginger. A malty base, somewhat roasted, with some Belgian yeast.

Medium bodied, strongly carbonated. Irritating.

Overall, meh. Pretty average.

Pours very dark brown, good thick lasting head of foam. Lacing abound. Roasted smell, some pine. A touch funky. Taste is all at once an oaty fruity coffee. Fascinating blend. Some bitterness holds. Like a porter with an alter ego. Firm mouthfeel. Really good.

On tap at Green Flash

A: Pours black with a gorgeous fluffy khaki colored head. Really great retention.

S: A gpod amount of spiciniess in here. Cracked black pepper, cayenne, some roasted malt and some faint dark fruit.

T: A lot lighter than I expected. Roasted malt, some peppery hops and a lot of black pepper on the finish.

Friendship Brew pours a very dark mahogany brown color. It’s nearly opaque. A few burgundy highlights are noted at the outermost edges. A nice tan head covers it. It stands a couple of fingers tall and sticks around for quite a while. It never fully dissipates. Lacing was sticky and moderate as it trailed down the glass. For a Saison – very interesting.

The nose is pretty good. It features a few dark malt notes out of the gate. Cocoa and dark chocolate are most notable. Coffee is noted. That’s surprising and seems a bit out of place. It smells very earthy and grainy. There’s even a strong piney scent. It has a very strong mix of floral notes and spices. I can’t even begin to identify them. Suffice it to say there are many. Alcohol is blended pretty and isn’t all that noticeable.

The flavor’s alright. It’s far from great. Chocolate malts are definitely noted. Cocoa and bittersweet dark chocolate flavors are the base. Roasted coffee is also noted. So far, it’s definitely not your typical Saison. Earthy and grainy notes are prevalent throughout. It does have a rather strong piney flavor to it. I’m not crazy about it. There are some strong spicy notes throughout. Ginger is probably the strongest. Alcohol isn’t noticeable. Given its strength, that’s not too surprising. Finishes malty, spicy, and piney. Eh. For a Saison, it’s pretty average.

Friendship Brew has a medium body. Carbonation seems pretty light and soft. It’s smooth and goes down relatively easy. If the flavor were a little better, this would be much more drinkable.

This collaboration between Green Flash Brewing Co. and St. Feuillien is alright, but doesn’t quite live up to the expectations I had for it. Its biggest problem is the flavor seems convoluted, too spicy, and far too piney. It’s probably worth a try, but I’d suggest sticking with a single bottle.

Green Flash Friendship Brew has an enormous, soapy, light brown head and a very dark brown (essentially black) appearance, with brown highlights in evidence on the edges as light hits the glass. Lots of lacing is left behind. The aroma is of spices (white pepper?) and dark bread crust, with an underlying sweetness. Taste is of white pepper, other odd spices of some sort, black bread, and there is a wall of bitterness at the back end of the sip. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Green Flash Friendship Brew finishes dry, mellow, peculiar, and easy drinking. Overall, even though it’s a strange beer, it’s still quite nice.

Picked up a single from Total Wine in mid-November for $2.49.

Beer poured black as night with a nice tan head that is leaving lacing behind.

Nose is something out of a medicine cabinet with a bit of barnyard funk. The combo is terrible.

Taste is a muddled mess, the barnyard medicine cabinet ruins the beer. In the end the roasted malty hoppy backbone attempts to salvage this brew but cannot pull it off.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and kind of smooth.

Overall this is a bad of beer that i have had in a long time. I don't think i can finish it which says a lot as this rarely happens.

Bottled on 8/7/12. Purchased 3/3/13 from a fine bottle shop. Assumed fresh (first time seeing this brew on the shelves) otherwise I would have checked. Enjoyed 3/5/13.

First impressions came from removing the cap and hearing a nice pfffssst! from the escaping carbon dioxide. Not that I’d expect a 7 month old beer to have gone flat but knowing that it still had this much life in it was encouraging.

I took the pour in stages as the brew had this wonderful tendency to foam, foam, foam, a rich, cocoa-colored creamy topping which lingered for some time and was quite a joy to watch. It definitely fits the description of a black saison, cocoa-tinged foam atop a black ale.
The aroma confronts you with a mix of chocolate roast and smoked cardamom (seriously) followed by an undertone which to me is unmistakably blood orange citrusy. It’s such a curious mix but tantalizing, and the more time I spend with it, the more it opens, the more I enjoy it.

The flavor starts off flatly bitter—the bitterness doesn’t peak, nor does it die off at the finish—with the roast notes and a blood orange zest coming across. There’s a touch of smoke with that smoked cardamom nuance, with enough of a body to support the flavors without becoming overwhelmed or too heavy.

At this point I’ve tried a handful of black saisons and this was one of the better ones. Hoping I see it again—fresh—so I can revisit it sometime.
