The idea of a single hop Citra session Ale intrigues me, and Green Flash seems like the right operation to try it.

Pours a slightly hazy gold with a lovely eggshell cap and extensive lacing. The nose hits all the expected Citra notes (grapefruit, pineapple, mango) with sweet bread in support. The taste follows, with lemongrass and a slight onion kick in addition. That sharp earthiness, although unexpected in a Citra-only offering, is actually pretty subtle and not at all unpleasant. As the beer warms, the sweet, almost buttery, notes of the mango show up more and really smooths the whole thing out.

Feel is thin and pretty highly carbonated, in line with the style. Finishes sticky and juicy without becoming syrupy, my tongue tingles but hasn't been obliterated. Definitely a west coast take on the session IPA, but not nearly as one-note as it could've been. Great, almost (but not quite) understated, work from Green Flash. Will definitely consider buying again.

I picked up a bottle of Green Flash's Citra Session IPA from their Hop Odyssey series for $1.99 at The Lager Mill. This one sounds pretty good with how warm the weather is today and I'm interested to try, so lets see how it goes. Best by December 15 2015. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a imperial pint glass.

A- The label looks ok, but it's a little plain and not too eye catching. It poured a fairly clear golden yellow color that took on more of a orange color when held to the light with almost three fingers worth of fluffy and creamy white head that died down to a thick ring that stayed till the end and it left some nice patchy rings of lacing behind. This is a very nice looking beer, I have no complaints at all.

S- The aroma starts off with a medium amount of sweetness with the hops being the first to show up and they impart some nice citrus and tropical fruit like aromas with a light floral and green hop aroma showing up in the background. Up next comes the malts which impart sweet malt and sweet bread like aroma with just a little bit of pale malts and doughy yeast showing up. This beer has a good aroma, I like the bright fruit hoppy aromas.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma and it starts off with a lower amount of medium sweetness with the hops still being the first to show up and they impart the same hoppy aspects that they did in the aroma, but the fruits are a little less juicy this time. Up next comes a slight metallic taste and it followed by the same malt aspects that I got in the aroma. On the finish there's higher amount of light bitterness with a fruity hop and bread malt aftertaste. This is a nice tasting beer, but I wish the hops were a little brighter like they were in the arom with no metallic aspects.

M- Smooth, slightly refreshing, on the thick side being light bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel is pretty nice and it works well with this beer.

Overall I thought this beer was nice and I thought it was a nice example of the style, it had just about everything that I look for in the style, but I felt like the metallic flavor held it back a little. This beer had nice drinkability, I could drink a couple, but it might start to wear on me after that. What I like the most about this beer was the aroma and appearance, those were the highlights of this beer. What I like the least about this beer is the metallic flavors and that the hops weren't just a little brighter when it came to the taste. I might buy this beer again and I wouldn't turn one down. It's not a must try session IPA, but isn't something to avoid either. All in all I liked this beer, but I didn't love it and I think with just a little work this could be a pretty good beer. It's not a favorite Green Flash beer and it's a little above average for the style. Nice job guys, but with a little more worth this could be right where it needs to be.

Not a huge fan of session ipas. Thought I would give this one a try. Nice golden appearance. Fairly hoppy smell. Taste was ok at best. I would rather have founders all day ipa or southern tier tangerine when I want a session ipa.

Best by 12/15/15. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours golden with a fluffy eggshell white head that leaves very nice lacing and retention. The aromas are somewhat underwhelming. Lots of fresh grass. Subtle citrus notes. Some malts in the mix. The flavors are full of fresh grass as well. Subtle hints of lemon. A touch of pine. Solid bitterness. It's ultimately clean. The mouthfeel is great. It's light, but has a nice body to it. Active carbonation and very smooth. Easy to drink.

I guess I was expecting more from the citra hops, but the craftsmanship is on point, just like most Green Flash beers.

I have really enjoyed beers from Green Flash in the past. The West Coast IPA is among my favorite beers and I hadn't had one that I haven't loved... Until now. A solid offering, even for a session IPA, but more of I "liked" it than "loved" it.

12 oz bottle into a teku.

Appearance: Pours a clear amber color. The head is three fingers high and white in shade. Retention is average, while the head's texture isn't particularly smooth (expected for the gravity). Some specks of lacing stick to the glass, ultimately creating a good-looking brew. (4)

Smell: I get plenty of melon, mango, and grass immediately. Ergo, this lives up to the billing so far. The malts do just enough to make this not seem like glorified detergent. In particular, they bring some light sugar cookie and white bread. The way it comes together, I'm genuinely impressed. (4)

Taste: Well, it shows off the Citra decently. While I don't get rich, defined tropical fruit flavors, I do get nice notes of melon, mango, grass, and pine. The Citra flavors are surprisingly intense, though it stops just short of being overly bitter. I really enjoy this - my only problem is that it doesn't break any ground beyond the typical 'session' IPA (albeit with much-better-than-average execution). (3.75)

Mouthfeel: It's 4.5%, so it should feel rather light. And it does. A shiver of astringency rolls down the tongue, creating more drinkability. Combined with the lack of creaminess and the vibrant carbonation, it is a bit rough on the palate. Still, it goes down very easily. (3.5)

Overall: One of the better Green Flash brews I've sampled. They still haven't completely returned to my good graces after the Silva Stout debacle, but this is definitely good enough for me to buy again. Nicely done, guys. (3.75)

3.8/5: A good reminder of why Citra is such a good hop

From the bottle dated 01/24/15. Sampled on May 4, 2015.

It pours yellow with a tremendous, long lasting white foamy head.

The aroma is subtle but that may be due to it being three months old. However I pick up citrus, grass, floral, and some toasted malts.

Medium body.

Same toastiness at first in the taste but the grassy and citrus hops kick in quickly and pull the flavors together at the end. Mild bitterness.

22oz bottle into my FW snifter glass
Notes taken on 10/18/2014

A: Beautiful bright straw gold body with some minimal hop haziness. Looks light and effervescent, forming a thin layer of pure snowy white stuff over top. Minimal in stay with some light dots and streaks of stick left behind.

S: Smells of fresh cut lemongrass and gooseberry with a mild bready undertone. Nice, light, and citrusy with a touch of spice there.

T: Tastes light crisp and citrusy with lots of fresh Citra hops showcased. I get lemongrass, gooseberry, and a touch of spiced grapefruit. Has a good amount of bready malt to balance for a Sessions. A slight metallic note but I have come to accept that in GF brews. Nice moderate high bitterness leans into a dry crisp finish with some mild resin action.

M: Super light and frothy on the palate. Nice hit of peppery bitterness midway. Finishes bone dry with a snappy finish. Slightly resinous but fairly clean I would say.

D: A very nice sessions and one of many to be had. Extremely drinkable with its pungent hop flavor and lightly filling nature. Well done Green Flash.

22oz bottle served in a large mug. 30406C0050753 is the code on the bottom. I don't know what it means.

Pours hazy yellow with a slight bronze hue, biggish coarse head that fades slowly, plenty of carbonation. Smell is moderate old hops (wish I could read that date code). Some lemon, cut grass, fairly mild aroma.

Taste is thoroughly bitter, still a slight old hops presence. Inoffensive, but not too interesting.

Mouthfeel is very dry. Overall, not bad. But not that good.

I am drinking this a month after its best by date and it is still very good. Citrus nose scented with grapefruit, a little earthy mustiness, berry and melon. Pours pale gold with a slight haze under a 2” off-white foam cap. While the head descends fairly quickly it is very lacy. On the front of the tongue the beer is all melon, tropical fruit citrus suspended in a very creamy solution that becomes increasingly bitter as it moves to the back. The beer clears and the melon becomes more prominent as the beer warms. The beer has a lot going on for 4.5 abv, is very drinkable and refreshing and has a delightful, creamy texture making it very sessionable.

Light and refreshing. Excellent brew day beer. Big orange and grapefruit notes. Hope that you like Citra! Finished clean and crisp, without being overly dry. Another really well done example of an IPA from Green Flash. Nothing totally mind blowing, but this was a good brew.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 2/4/2015. Pours slightly hazy bright golden color with a 2 finger dense and rocky white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, mango, floral, grass, light pine, light honey, light bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of bright citrus/tropical hops and light-moderate pale malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, mango, floral, grass, pine, light honey, light bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Fair amount of pine.grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon/orange zest, mango, pine, light honey/bread and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a godo bit. Damn nice complexity and balance of bright citrus/tropical hops and light-moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and light-medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and fairly sticky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.5%. Overall this is an excellent session IPA style. All around great complexity and balance of bright citrus/tropical hops and light-moderate pale malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a mason jar.

Appearance: Pours a bright golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. About one finger of white head that settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A ripe and juicy hop forward aroma with good hints of citrus fruit and pine. Upfront citra hop scent with big hints of grapefruit, mango, orange peel, lemon, pineapple, passion fruit, apricot, and melon. Dank hints of pine resin and some grassy hops. Soft pale malt backing with hints of cracker, grains, and yeast. A very good hoppy aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a juicy and dank hop forward taste with big notes of citrus and pine. Big upfront taste of citra hops with juicy notes of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, pineapple, lemon, apricot, melon, and passion fruit. Spicy notes of pine resin along with some grassy hops. Light backing malt presence with notes of grains, cracker, and yeast. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Juicy, oily, and pretty smooth with a drying finish.

Overall: A great version of a session West Coast IPA. Big juicy hop flavor with a light smooth body.

Light amber color, a little hazy, with a large head and great lacing. Aroma punches you in the face with tropical hops. Lots of fruit in the flavor, but as is the case with session IPAs, the balance is totally off. No malt presence to speak of. Light to medium bodied with long lasting hop flavor. Better than a few others I've tried in the style, but far from great.

A very hop forward IPA, very low abv, so it lives up to the name. Kind of a watery mouth feel and not much flavor beyond the bitterness of the hops. Not bad, I enjoyed it for the most part, but was not outstanding.

I almost didn't buy this because everybody keeps telling me that Citra smells like cat pee...just kidding. Citra hops are amazing. I almost didn't buy it because it was $8 for session beer! The same price as a bottle of DINNER! GTFO...but here we are.

1/24/15 drink by date poured into a Hill Farmstead glass - 1 inch + head with giant bubbles. Light straw color.

Smell is definitely citra but a lingering smell that I would describe as "pilsner-ish" - not a great nose.

Really sharp, borderline offensive, taste when it hits your lips.

Overcarbonated - way overcarbonated for my liking.

I'm a CITRA lover - can't get enough of it - but this was a big miss for me. Lots of better session IPA's out there. Still probably better than cat pee.

A - Pours a hazy yellow with a two-finger foamy white head. Heavy soapy lacing.

S - Aroma of mango, orange, and lots of grapefruit.

T - The taste is straight Citra hops, lots of grapefruit, orange, and tangerine. The citrus is backed by a decent amount of maltiness.

M - Medium bodied with high carbonation. Very crisp mouthfeel with a dry finish.

O - This is the best session IPA I've had. Lots of bright, juicy flavors. Very refreshing.

Bottle from Tipples with Best By date 01/24/15, poured 11/8/14. Pours hazy yellow with a one finger white bubbly head. Big Citra aroma of lemon rinds, pine comes, sweet honey citrus, a little soapy. Flavor is extremely raw vegetal hop flavors, low bitterness, barely any malt backbone but a lightly sweet honey lemon flavor. Super light body, some funky off flavors. This is a bit of a miss for me from the guys that usually do good stuff with hops. Meh.

Cap says to share with friends. No intention of doing that!
Pours a clear gold, one finger thick sudsy white head, streaks of lace down the glass. Smell: a pop of fruit loops, then all grass and citrus zest: grapefruit, lemon. Taste: lemon-lime, tangerine; lots of juicy citrus over a crackery + white grape base. Nice hop fix at low abv without sacrificing body/feel (seems to be a problem for most session IPAs). This is a session IPA that could actually compete as a change of pace from my go-to APA except on availability and price.

Poured into a Pint glass showed a nice thick white 2 fingered head sitting atop a clear light Golden brew, aroma is straight up Citra Hops and grapefruit rind. Sipping past the thick head you get the welcomed bitter tang flowing from front to back on the tongue,it stays there just long enough for you to want another sip. The Session style of IPA's is a new beast for me and my concern was taste...or lack there of...but this has everything flavor wise without the ABV that could cut your night short if not careful. The mouthfeel is dead on and satisfying, overall this is a fine brew that I would grab again.

Session IPA...

I love this new category.
Light and crisp, frothy head.
Citrusy, grassy aroma followed by a zesty the same in taste.
Lighter mouthfeel (as expected).
And only 4.5% ABV ...sessionable indeed!!!

I appreciate the chance to try this bottle, thanks Alex -poured chilled from the bomber into a glass. Review from notes A-4.25 S-4 M-3.75 T-4 O-4

The color is golden with clear visibility and carbonation is visible with fast rising bubbles with thick 2 fingers of foamy white head with wispy lace that collects bead is fine. The smell has a very citrus and tropical aroma with lots of tangelo, grapefruit type citra aroma with mild dank herbal component. The feel is very tangy with bitter and citrus acidity with very low sweetness and moderate carbonation with light toasted texture and dry long finish.

The taste is very rich with citra hop flavor which has a dank herbal and mild grapefruit tanginess in the front end with mild malt backing up the hops with gentle sweetness -the taste is relatively dry with a zesty finish. This is a pretty decent Session style IPA the hops are the focus but it still is drinkable without a lot of astringency from trying to push it to the edge
