Cerveja Gourmet is just one of the many cases in point of a growing demand for craft beer in São Paulo. What started out as an online shop for beer not long ago quickly received demand which outgrew the store. The decision was made to open a bar and store in the space of a vacant Italian restaurant near its original base. And what a place for beer this is....

It feels like a rustic boteco on the inside. The bar is very long , winding, and accomidating. Wooden shelves stretching all the way to the high ceiling. A "Tuscan" styled bathroom. You can sense part of the original Italian restaurant inside Cerveja Gourmet.

I was joined by a few people at a table to drink some beers. I already knew Guillerme and Mauro, who were working behind the bar that night, but managed to get some samples. I also reunited with one other guy and his wife. I wasn't sure where to begin with beer...

Four taps behind the bar and an inventory of over 200 bottles to choose from. The beers Guinness, Eisenbahn Weizenbier, Bamberg Pilsen, and to my surprise Dama IPA were on-tap. Guillerme pushed a draft version of Dama IPA my way, swearing it tastes much different from the bottled version. I agreed shorty after. And the bottles available....how does one drink them if they're sitting at store temperature? Easy, throw the bottles in a bunker of ice water and they'll be ready in 10 minutes. Guillerme, you are right again. It's hard to understate the bottles available, but you can find MoNdi, Seasons, Way, Klein, Coruja, Floreffe, Wells, Traquair House, Baachus, and Bourganel. There is a reasonable arsenal of custom glassware, all with the Cerveja Gourmet logo, not as deep as some Paulista bars, but the essential types of glassware as there.

Boteco-style petiscos are available from the kitchen if you like to nibble while you drink. I had two different items, one was a croque-monsieur, which was satisfying and not too expensive. While on the subject, for São Paulo, the price of beer is quite reasonable, especially as it seems more and more bars around the city are jacking up the prices they charge (I'm looking at you Asterix).

In short, a great spot to try different beers. I wish many years of success to come for Guillerme and Mauro at Cerveja Gourmet.
