The Ace of Cups is a rock venue with a focus on beer and music. Situated just north of campus in the building that once housed the bro-bar Sloopy's, it has the potential to be one of the coolest near-campus bars. It's owned by the owner of Surly Girl, and if Surly were to have a leather jacket donned, mohawked sister, this would be it. The inside itself is one large room with a bar housed along the back corner. Everything is themed black and gothic and there's a decently-sized stage across the bar. Ace of Cups reminds me of a dive rock club--without the grimey feel and sticky floor. The scene is mostly record-store music geeks and younger hipsters and the music is definitely garage.
Good beer on draft is plentiful. A lot of local options take over the taps--especially from Barley's. Out of the dozen options, half of them are a mix of Barley's, Columbus, and Elevator, with most of the pints priced around $4. The stars of the evening included Founders Porter and Founders Breakfast Stout, the latter being priced at $5 a pour. There are a number of bottles available, but frankly I didn't even need to bother loooking through them after seeing the draft options.
The tenders were nice but the venue is so new that they all revealed a bit of rust. The food (a handful of vegetarian options with meat add-ins) sounded good, but we didn't get a chance to try any of it.
I'd give Ace of Cups a high probability of becoming a regular haunt.
