Appearance: Utterly black before a strong light, with a moderate, dense, and finely-beaded tan head, with good retention, only collapsing, after a long interval, to a dusting of foam on the surface. Thin, small-beaded lacing coats the glass wall in an broken sheet.

Aroma: Bitter cocoa, cold coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malt and earth dominate the aroma.

Taste: The taste begins with mild cold coffee and bitter cocoa, and a fulsome presence of roasted malt. Soon after, unsweetened chocolate offers its contribution. Towards the end of the taste, there is a moderate flourish of wood. Finishes with a lingering note of bitter cocoa and earth.

Mouth feel: Smooth and full, perhaps a touch thinner than expected, still, very good. The carbonation offers a ghostly kiss.

Drinkability/notes: A very nice example. I wish that the ABV were at eight percent, and the body just a touch fuller, but, very good, nonetheless.

Presentation: Packaged in a standard twelve-ounce aluminum can, served in a Duvel chalice.

Beer poured from the can. Dark black appearance with no head. Little roasty with some chocolate and slight amounts of coffee. Bittersweet with some chocolate. Pretty creamy body. Overall, good mouthfeel.

12 oz. Can

Pours a pretty nice dark brown color, with some pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice thick/creamy two-finger light tan head, which leaves some pretty nice sticky lacing behind. The nose is malty, with some nice chocolate/toffee, vanilla, kinda roasty. The taste is pretty nice, malty, with some nice chocolate/toffee notes, vanilla, roasty. Medium body, ABV is hidden nicely, with a nice little dry/bitter finish. Overall, a tasty brew.

This was a very solid porter, a bit of a surprise considering its origin (or maybe I just don't know much about the Texas beer scene), but quite well made. Porters are one of my favorite styles, and this one fit in very well with what I like. Not too heavy, but plenty of caramel and chocolate hints with just a bit of hops and a faint roasty bitterness for balance. I'd definitely buy this again, and I'll look for other beers from this brewery if I find them in my part of the country.
