What are these descriptions? Oniony? Overly Hopped? Funky aroma? It's a double IPA w/ citra & mosaic, plain and simple. Delicious. End of story. Drink it up - no one cares where you got it, when you got it, what size underwear you have on, what brewery's glass you drank it out of or why you think you need to include any of that. Easy does it! It's a BEER!

Sailors usually fear reprisal when they mess with the Captain's Daughter. In this case, the advances are more than welcome. I went into this can with an open mind, despite the claims from the local purveyor that it was something extra special. Needless to say, it delivered. The hop bill is very complex with a multitude of citrus-like layers; an amazing feat if strictly brewed with mosaic hops. The smell is quite exceptional; truly unique; almost perfect. A pleasure to taste with a very creamy feel on the tongue. The 8.5% abv is subdued and will surely please the session tendencies of hardcore hopheads. The beer, as well as the depiction of the daughter on the can, reminds me of my 8th grade girlfriend's finer points. Ahem, larrrrrrge! Seek, and enjoy.

12oz can with a 10/29 sticker on the 4 pack holder. Pours a cloudy burnt yellow color with a small amount of head. Very little lacing. Fantastic aroma. Butterscotch, pineapple, guava, honey, and bubblegum. The taste is more of the same. Pineapple, butterscotch and guava. More honey and floral notes. Light bready malt flavor but the hops dominate. Slightly boozey. Finishes with more of that butterscotch and pineapple with some light citrus. This phrase is probably overused, but it reminds me a bit of Heady Topper. Overall, I'm blown away by this beer and will be grabbing up 4 packs whenever I see them.

Sampling a cellar temp can poured into a snifter. Beer is a gift from my friend Jared of Home restaurant in Branford.
The beer pours a clear copper hue with a creamy bleached white head of 1 cm foaming up and fading rapidly to a surface layer. The can gives up some sediment laden dredges towards the end of the pour and I try to stop when I notice this happening, but still end up with a good load of very fine suspended sediment in my glass.
The aroma on this beer is amazing! Such robust hop scents with a bit of pine sap and grapefruit juice. Very fruity nose maybe pineapple too. Fun scents for sure.
First sip reveals a very fine tingly carbonation and slightly thick body with a silky smooth texture. Easy to drink with physical characteristics.
Flavor is briefly sweet with caramel and toffee but then rolls to fruity hops with definite pineapple hits and some grapefruit mixed in. The finish is with some bite and lingers with a bit of astringent bitterness, with a slight aspirin hit after each swallow. My mouth doesnt dry out as I had expected from the aroma and alcohol level.
Very easy to drink with no hints of booze. Overall a very enjoyable beer that has a complex hop profile and is incredibly fruity throughout with just light hits of bitterness on the finish.
Definitely worth a try if you see it and I am very appreciative to Jared for sharing the can with me!

The beer comes in a wonderful rich and hazy bright orange.

The aroma has a theme of candied tropics. Mango, passion fruit, dried apricot, persimmon. A light bready malt, but there is such a great intensity of candied and dried fruits.

The flavor follows wit that intense candy or fruity bubble gum quality, leaning towards tropical bubble gum. Nectarine, persimmon, passion fruit, mango, pineapple. Onto a light crackery malt, and then intense drying of grassiness with a medium plus bitterness. The finish lingers leaving the palate itching for more.

The mouthfeel is creamy up front, but falls always to the dry finish. This is an extremely dangerous DIPA for how drinkable it is. A truly world class DIPA.

poured from a can into a tulip glass

I can tell from the color that I'm going to love this beer, it has that bright, golden straw yellow that I tend to associate with my favorite D/IPAs. A nice, dense white head forms and takes its time going away, leaving lovely blobs of lacing. Oddly, I get almost no nose at all, which I found surprising. Too bad. BUT, thank god, the flavor profile is a grand slam. Juicy, tropical, sweet, like many a new school DIPA, but then this amazing malt presence appears, like hopped-up caramel or toffee, and a finish that lasts for days. It's unreal tasty. Incredibly easy to drink too, almost begs you to take another sip. But damn, that finish lingers! This is awesome.

What an amazing DIPA, big aroma from the crack of the can, tropical fruity goodness with a hint of a piney finish..... Outstanding beer! So glad it's year-round! RI's heady-topper

12 oz can, 4 pack came with a small sticker (9-02-15 - canning date?)

Pours hazed tangerine, fine off white head, goes to nice looking low sheeting and nicely developed strands of fine lacing.

Bold grapefruit nose evident as soon as the can is popped.

This is a super tasty, super citric DIPA....very enjoyable in all aspects...glad to see this new one on the shelves of one of my local shops.

L -- A very nice hazy yellow with a creamy and somewhat frothy white head. Lacing is solid until halfway through.

S -- Grapefruit nectarines are at the front, pine and dank towards the end of a deep inhalation. Minor plum notes begin to emerge with warmth.

T -- A nice resinous flavor comes at me first, the light bitterness plus carbonation causing a tingle on my tongue. The fruits from the aroma come along as well, all melding together in with the bitterness to create something very pleasing. I think nectarine is spot on in describing the flavor I get here, though mango sneaks into that as well. Letting a sip warm on the tongue brings me around in circles, from resin to fruit to resin and back to fruit again. The bitterness is there ever so slightly noting its presence and acting as accompaniment rather than conductor.

F -- Medium to medium-full, but quite easy drinking given that and the strong carbonation.

O -- A very good IIPA. The aroma was slightly muted as compared to the taste, so that gets knocked a little, but if this were available more readily I think it would be a mainstay. There are some IIPAs that do the dank/resin very well, and others that are like drinking fruit juice, but I think this sits very well somewhere in between.

Purchased a can from the cooler at the check out. I told her recommend an IPA and she gave me a Captain's Daughter. Couldn't see the look or lacing as I drank it. Smell and taste I'll rate it Very Good. Didn't know it was an 8.5% until I got on line. I would definitely rate this a REVISIT :)

Nice light color unfiltered appearance . An excellent high hopped ale. In my opinion overly hopped as many American IPAs are but at least here they balanced and overall a excellently it out so my 4.5 rating . However i don't like being pounded over the head with hops and this one does. If you are a hop head you should love this one

Canned 11/16. Had out of a spiegelau glass. Beer has a light golden, almost straw yellow color with a medium plus haze and a finger and a half of bright white head. Aroma has some cattiness up front but is very tropical, reminds me of green honeydew melon, maybe blueberry. Flavor carries over with a pithy, almost Campari like bitterness which lingers on the palate. Solid medium mouthfeel but nothing to write home about. Overall this is a style of beer I really like and it is readily available by me. Easily one of the best beers I can just pull off of the shelf. 93.25 Points!

From the can, pours cloudy bright gold color with a solid 2 finger thick foamy off white head that was packed with bubbles of all sizes, going down very slowly and leaving a layer on top and

Smells of fresh squeezed orange, pineapple, grapefruit, lemon, tangerine, starfruit, fresh piney hops, tropical fruit, biscuit and faint graham cracker. The balance is off, but the citrus and tropical fruit aroma is so fresh and good that it doesn't matter since this just reeks of dank citrus hops (the Citra and Mosaic listed on the can).

Taste is all citrus up front with grapefruit, lemon, tangerine, mango, pineapple, tangerine, fresh oily citrus hops and zesty piney hops, followed by lightly toasted grains, biscuit and graham cracker. Floral hops show up and bring mild peppery spices and coriander before shifting back to tropical fruit and more hoppy goodness. Much better balance in the flavor, the sweetness of the malt cuts the bitterness and allows a little caramel and brown sugar to come through. This brew does a wonderful job of hiding the 8.5% ABV with all the complex flavors.

Mouthfeel is smooth and on the chewy side, with mild to average carbonation, nice texture and a mid-level bitterness that reminds you that this is a hop bomb. A spot-on West Coast style DIPA straight outta Rhode Island, very well done.

Finally getting around to reviewing this one, have heard way too many good things about it and usually enjoy Grey Sail's beers.

A- Very pale golden yellow pour from the 12oz can into a tall becher. The cap is thick, white and has a creamy consistency displaying great retention before dying out to a wide ring and a blanket atop the middle of the brew. Large sheets of lace after each sip.

S- Incredibly dank, fresh hops in the aroma with an overall profile containing tropical fruits, stone fruit, citrus and those dank nugs. Mango, peach, mint, skunk weed, passionfruit, pineapple, apricot and floral notes come to mind. The hops clearly run the show.

T- Follows up on the aroma with the dank herbs in the forefront with mango, tangerine, ruby red grapefruit (much more present than the aroma), apricot, peach, pineapple, slight passionfruit, melon and some cantaloupe in a flavor that is juicy but lacks the nectary sweetness. The grapefruit hops provide a nice bitter, zesty edge to add depth. Slight hints of cereal grain, freshly mashed two-row, bread and crackers.

MF- Puffy and creamy texture to a body that is moderately thick and a bit oily. The carbonation is at a medium-high level and it ends with a zesty, oily citrus bitterness.

On par with the great IPAs of today with a very dank hop flavor profile that is balanced out with grapefruit, mango and a general stone fruit character. Slightly sweet but not a nectar brew. I gotta find more of this some time.

A buddy of mine went from teaching into the Pennsylvania Department of Education, then to Rhode Island's DE, onto Massachusetts DE & has come back to PA. During his time in NE, I was up repeatedly for fests, brewery tours, the Frozen Four, etc. I have had a number of their beers, but I am happy to say that we now have distro here in PA & that I am adding this one to The CANQuest (tm)!

From the CAN: "Keep Cold. Drink Fresh."; "You can't help but be tempted by our Captain's Daughter. Her full body. Her exotic bouquet. Brewed with Mosaic and Citra hops, her allure is as fresh as it is intriguing. Yet she commands respect. Try to take advantage of her and she'll put you in your place. We raised our daughter well! Cheers, [undersigned] Jen and Alan".

I tried to be gentle, both in my Crack! of the vent & the subseCANt Glug, but I was still surprised by a mild haziness that was developing. Well, on with the show! I got it all decanted & then followed up with an in-glass swirl that raised just over a finger of dense, foamy, rocky, French Vanilla-colored head with excellent retention. Color was a deeply-hazy/lightly-cloudy Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5). Nose smelled like a bagful of grapefruits! Wow. Mouthfeel was big, full & creamy - just as I would expect in the style. The taste, while bitter & grapefruity, was not as intense as it had been on the nose. Instead, it had a biscuit maltiness that was subtle & understated while just assertive enough to keep the bitterness in check. This beer was this self-described, self-avowed hophead's equivalent of Baby Bear's beer: not too bitter, not too malty, but just right! Each time that I lifted the glass to my face for a drink, the nose would CANtinue to catch me by surprise.

One of, if not the best beer out of RI right now. This hop forward DIPA is amazingly fresh and extremely crushable. Tropical and citrus fruits shine through. Smells amazing and tastes even better. Cheers!

Poured into a (Grey Sail) tulip from a can with a canned date 10/19.
Pours a hazy burnt straw color. A little white head which dissipates. You can see some hop oil on the surface once it clears. Fantastic tropical fruit aroma, loads of grapefruit and citrus. Excellent mouth feel and body. Juicy citrusy hop taste that really lingers in between each sip. Loads of mosaic up front. Long long finish. Overall an example of what I would consider the best beer in Rhode Island, from one of my personal favorite breweries. This truly is a world-class beer. Welcome Rhode Island's Heady Topper!

12 oz. Can
Canned On: 03-06-17

Pours a pretty nice cloudy yellowish color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice thick/creamy/foamy two-finger plus white head, which leaves alot of thick/creamy/foamy sticky lacing behind. The nose is pretty nice, hoppy, slight malt, with lots of citrus, some nice little diesel. The taste is pretty nice as well, hoppy, some maltyness, very nice citrus, with some nice diesel. Medium body, ABV hidden pretty well. Overall, a very nice brew. Glad I've gotten a chance to try it. Thanks Larry!

L- hazy grapefruit color, thin head dissipates immediately
S- grapefruit, citrus, mango tropical fruit
T- sweet creamy malt, followed by grapefruit, grapefruit peel. tropical fruit, the finish starts off spicy culminating in a bitter grapefruit explosion
F- light-to-medium bodied, creamy feel, light carbonation
O- very nice IIPA, extremely drinkable, the taste is pretty complex for an IPA woven-like, but also delivers in the bitterness department as well

Pours a hazy grapefruit color, have seen yeast in pours at times, but this has been infrequent in my experience, Smell is orange, mango, mild and not overpowering. Taste follows the smell with sweet tropical orange, mango, nectarine as well. Medium bodied and mild bitterness. You don't taste the alcohol in this beer. Overall smooth, an excellent DIPA.

On-draft and served in a Grey Sail can glass. Pours a golden-orange hue with a slightly hazy clarity and a rocky, one inch, bright white head that eventually settles into a large dollop. Spots, clusters and swaths of lacing exhibit excellent adherence. Nose expresses mango, pineapple, citrus zest and an earthy/herbal quality towards the tail end. Taste follows nose; however, less tropical fruit and more citrus zest and an earthy/herbal bitterness that lingers between quaffs. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body (but closer to light) with a pleasant carbonation with a nice prickle and a mild acidity. Just a fantastic DIPA without being overly high in alcohol. Best brewery in Rhode Island in my opinion.

I traveled to Grey Sail Brewing in Rhode Island on a Saturday beer-run road trip with a co-worker and close friend. We stopped at Grey Sail last before heading home. Captain's Daughter, even though the can design looks like something my dad would have been drinking back in the 70's, is easily one of the most delicious double IPA's I've ever had. I had a fresh pour while we were there, but was not immediately blown away by my first sampling of Grey Sail's signature beer. However, the six pack I took home, every one of them was amazing and worth the short drive there from Proclamation Ale Co.

12-oz can dated 12/6 from Bogie's in Beverly, MA - poured into a Ghandi-Bot Tulip.

The nose is definitely Mosaic, which I love...passion fruit and guava notes, but totally over powered by a "homebrew" smell that is all too familiar - what smells to me like under-fermented wort.

The taste is really sharp, something is off with this beer...

Disappointed because i had heard only good things...I'll still probably buy it again to see if this was a one-off...
