The beer pours a dark black with a small tan head.
It smells of roasted malts, chocolate, and coffee.
It's on the lighter side in body for the style, but still has a great mouthfeel. It's silky smooth. The taste is more of that roasted coffee and chocolate flavor. This is a very tasty stout.
Overall, I'd buy it again. It's a great beer from a new brewery in my homestate. You can't really go wrong there.

Thanks to angrybabboon for sharing the bottle. Review adapted from notes taken 8/2/2014.
Appearance: Crazy dark brown. Masquerades as black. Small collar of dark khaki. Loose and creamy. Head retention is minimal leaving a small collar and no cap. Moderately thick pour.
Smell: Roasty sweet. Some burnt malt. Cooked and caramelized malts. Deep dark fruitiness. Some plum and fig with a slightly sweet dark cherry. Chocolate, cocoa, bitter bins, and a touch of milk chocolate sweetness. Minimal hop presence, very slight earthiness. A touch of oxidation adds some slightly metallic and sharp battery notes. Something almost woody as well.
Taste: Deep rich fruit. Cherry and plum and fig, just like the nose. Rich roasted malt with a solid malty sweetness as well. Tons of dark cocoa. Pushes a bitterness that borders on nibs with a solid helping of chocolate malt. Slightly burnt. A solid lactic sweetness as well. Milk chocolate. Cocoa dominates as it warms. Some hints of almost licorice. Very minimal hop notes. Slight earthiness buried in the back.
Mouthfeel: Medium leaning toward full body. Moderate carbonation. Slightly creamy with a smooth sip. Slightly slick finish.
Overall: Worth looking up on occasion.
It's good. Nothing memorable but sometimes that's what you want. It's a drinking stout and that's more than enough in my book.

Review from notes dated 8/2/14
A: Deep, dark brown - pours with a small, light tan head, fades to virtually nothing, but does leave a few spots of lacing
S: Dark, cooked, caramel malts, chocolate malts - very dark, very burnt, very cooked, maybe a bit much - some licorice, molasses, and dark chocolate - some burnt coffee as well
T: Burnt chocolate, burnt molasses, and burnt coffee - overall, a bit overcooked in general, but still good - caramel, molasses, and some burnt sugar - milk chocolate, maybe a touch of vanilla, and coffee
M: On the heavy side of medium, with a thick head, low carbonation, and a boozy finish
O: Yes, you'll be seeing stars
This is a good effort, but I think it could use some fine tuning. It's burly, but it could actually have a burlier base to stand up to the burnt flavors. It's definitely worth a try, if you can still find it, and I am curious to see if Grey Sail ever updates this.

Poured at cellar temperature from a 22 oz bottle into a snifter. Thanks Andrew for sharing this with me! Bottled at least a year ago.
A- Pours a rich, black body with a generous, fluffy, milk chocolate colored head that's absolutely stunning. Very inviting. Some settling.
S- As it warms, the aromas really start to become more prominent, including vanilla, milk chocolate, fresh coffee beans, slight booze.
T- Starts off slightly sharp but that quickly fades to reveal delicious notes of dark chocolate, coffee, and toffee. The finish is roasty, toasty, and charred and delicous.
M- Thick, rich, low carbonation.
Greysail brewed a winner with this one - this is a great representation of the style. I hope they do another imperial stout in the future

Dated June 28 2012
A: Thick, dark head with some retention and some lacing.
S: Initially strong roasted barley, then some milk chocolate comes thru. The nose is not too shy.
T: Lots of roasted barley. Dried fruit comes thru in the middle and is probably the most appealing flavor. Charred husk lingers on the finish. This beer cries out for food or something else to serve as a foil. Almonds helped.
M: Not as thick as many in the style, but not problematically thin.
O: Maybe I'm missing out on some of the brighter flavors because of the age, but this seems sort of a one note imperial stout. I really don't need a bomber of this, but then it's because it's a bomber that it sat in the fridge for as long as it did.

22oz bottle poured into a CBS snifter
Pours black with a thin brown head that dissipated quickly. Opaque in the glass.
Smells sweet with lots of roasted malts and a bit of molasses, a bit of a vanilla undertone. A little boozy but by no means is it too much.
Tastes of dry roasted malts, a bitter-sweet chocolate and a little fig or dark cherry, something that I can't really place and just makes me keep taking sip after sip to try and figure it out.
The mouthfeel is lighter than I would have expected based on the look and smell of this beer, however, it is not thin and watery by any stretch. IT is a bit over-carbonated for me though and could certainly be toned down I think.
Overall this is a solid RIS with some great flavors going on. I would love it if this were a bit thicker and less carbonated, but all in all a very good RIS that I will pick up again.
