I enjoyed this beer on tap at Titletown. Poured into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a nice black color with a billowy tan head. Only way to make this look better would have been to serve it in a mug.

Smell: Roasted malt and a hint of caramel. Nice and subdued.

Taste: Just as the smell suggests, but more sweet here than in the aroma.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and very smooth.

Drinkability: Very drinkable brew and an excellent representation of this style. Glad to see this reappeared on the tap list.

Appearance is an opaque beauty with a wispy head. Little lacing. Nose is coffee and chocolate and solvent. Dreamy. Taste is similar to nose with meat and just a tad too much bitterness; for my tastes anyway. Drinkability and mouthfeel were great and decent respectively. Prost!

I picked this beer up while in town for a Packers game and I am finally just now getting around to reviewing it.

This beer pours an opaque black color with a creamy, khaki colored head that dissipates incredibly slowly. 4.5/5 The aroma ifs fairly strong and very heavy on the malt side of things with molasses, toast, hazelnuts, toffee, chocolate, and espresso all coming out in a blend of malty goodness. The hops are hardly noticeable but come across as earthy and herbal in nature. 4/5 As with the aroma, the flavor is fairly strong and once again favors the malt as opposed to the hops. Notes of grain, pumpernickel bread, hazelnuts, toffee, baker's chocolate and coffee all come out very strongly and dominate any mention of hops. The flavor is balanced more toward bitter than sweet with the hops providing a good bitter counterbalance to the dark roasted nature of the malt. 3.75/5 This is a medium bodied beer that has a light carbonation burn up front that leads into a slick but drying sensation on the tongue with the dryness lingering moderately long. 4/5 This is a very good Schwarzbier that brings out the dark roasted malt very nicely and really leans toward the bitterness rather than sweetness. The sweetness isothere, but it is mainly just a slight counterbalance to the bitter. 4/5

I admit to trying this beer just because of the name, though I'm a fan of dark beers in general. Found it in bottles at Woodmans in Madison. Pitch black color, rather strong coffee smell, but the taste is kind of on the hoppy side with slight hints of cocoa and coffee and not much else. Feels about right for a 5% ABV Schwartz. I'll probably have it again. May the Schwartz be with them.

Pours a tawny dark brown into the glass, ample tan foam at first that fades quickly to a skim after the first sip. No lace, thin broken surface skim in the center. Looks black once poured.

Aroma is metallic, which is distracting. Some light roast beyond that but it's pretty mellow.

Taste is better, mildly roasty with a nutty toasted malt flavor. Somewhat dry aftertaste.
Body is light with substance and ample carbonation. Overall a decent effort.

On-tap at Three Cellars, Franklin, WI:

Pours very dark brown with a lasting thin tan head. Lacing sticks.

The smell is of dark caramel, chocolate with restrained roast.

The taste is of caramel and chocolate with an earthy hop touch and balancing restrained roast in the clean finish.

An enjoyable schwartbier that fits the style very well.

Pours a coke black with the carbonation of a coke. Smell is of coffee beans. Taste is of coffee with a molasses aftertaste. Mouthfeel is of coffee. Overall, a good beer. Interesting it looks like a coke, but tastes like coffee.

95% opaque, dark chocolate brown with some bottom-of-the-cup coffee hues when it's held to the light. Head is 1 finger and frothy.

Aroma is quiet; of roast dark munich malts and prunes. Some dry rice, as well.

This beer has a very nice smokey roasted profile. Flavors of smoked kilned malts and some pruney flavors. Some light sourness in there somewhere that throws it off a touch.

Nice and thin as a lager should be, but still thick enough to provide substance. Nice carbonation as well.

Overall, another good brew from Titletown. I'd have more from them given the chance.

Had this on tap with dinner last night; was my fist visit to Titletown Brewing and definitely enjoyed myself. The look and smell were fantastic, malty sweet smell with black appearance. It may have been my mood but I thought this was a tad watery ... I wanted a little more umph to this beer. It had the mouthfeel of an extract brew versus a grain brew ... Flavor was sort of bland, felt like I was drinking a smokey leinenkugels. Nice brewery, and their bourbon barrel aged barleywine was one of the best I've tried. Keep up the good work crew! They can't all be home runs.
