Poured into an imperial nonic a crude oil black with a great looking bubbly dark mocha colored head that settles very slowly.Wow the rush of lemon really hits in the nose, the mix of lemon and dark roast coffee is interesting and a little odd, there is a real earthiness as well. The lemony flavors are big on the palate but they don't overpower the actual "stoutness" of the beer, unsweetened chocolate, earth, and deep roast play a big role as well.A different kind of export stout, the lemon grass is pretty damn big.

On tap at World of Beer in Raleigh on 8/30/12.

A - pitch black with a thick, brown head that has great retention

S - faint lemon

T - faint roasted malts, faintly bitter, faint coffee, lemon all over the place

M - medium bodied, well carbonated, very smooth

I found this beer odd, but intriguing. The lemongrass and lemon zest can be found throughout the flavor and in every sip. At first, I was underwhelmed but I really did start getting into it by the end of the pint. The lemon does a great job cutting the boldness and bitterness of the roasted malts which gives this beer an incredible drinkability. For 7% it's quaffable and refreshing; a stout for those hot days. I wish only that more of the traditional stout aromas and flavors came through in both the nose and taste. Otherwise, this was a unique (to me) beer that I enjoyed.

The only reason i'm selecting three is because this is the first brew I got from this brewery and I don't want to give it a bad score over something that can happen.

The first thing I noticed about this brewery is how they cap the beers. Of the three styles my local grocery store had I noticed a circular indentation on the caps and just thought it was odd.

Upon opening the beer I encountered a gusher or infection of the beer.

I decanted the remaining beer into a glass and observed very large carbonation
bubbles and a odd smell but was willing to taste it because i just had goat cheese for a snack and was thinking my "smeller" was off.

And naturally I had to taste it......bluh

I will buy another bottle and try again in hope that the mysterious ring on the cap is just a fluke.

Nice dark stout with a quickly fading head. A lemony coffee smell with a strong booze scent that is prevalent. Tastes like it smells. Boozy, coffee and lemony flavors are all over this. It feels a bit light for a stout but only slightly. Only slightly bitter with lingering coffee and lemon flavors. Not a bad brew.

Served on tap at Serena in Research Triangle Park, NC

A: Pours an opaque jet black in color with some light amounts of dark amber highlights and just a touch of visible carbonation. The beer has a finger tall dark mocha head that slowly reduces to a thin film covering about half of the surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of dark roasted malts with some lighter notes of coffee, lemongrass, and lemon/citrus.

T: Similar to the smell, the flavors of this beer start out with light to moderate amounts of dark roasted malts with a hint of freshly ground coffee and chocolate. Next, there are some lighter note of lemon/citrus and a moderate amount of lemongrass. Moderate amounts of bitterness towards the finish that fade quickly.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth.

O: This beer is interesting as there is some upfront sweetness with moderate bitterness in the finish but yet it does not complete come off as balanced - the addition of the lemon and lemongrass is interesting but maybe a bit overpowering. The alcohol is very well hidden but this is largely a slow sipping beer for me and not as refreshing as I had hoped for...

16 oz can

pours black, with a massive, way too much head. I had to wait for about 6 inches of head to settle down and pour in about 3 stints. aroma and taste is a bit sharp, acidic. strong roast flavor. medium bodied. too carbonated, but after it settles down, its fine.

This beer is greater than the sum of its parts. It almost tastes like a saison through the lens of a stout. Very rich, very floral, not too thick. Overall, the best of Mystery's beers.

Appearance: Arrives coffee brown with a very nice mocha-colored head that persists and laces impressively

Smell: Roasty, with coffee and surprising lemongrass tones

Taste: Roast, chocolate and coffee, as you would expect from a stout, but the lemongrass character is a surprise; finishes dry, though the lemony aspect lingers

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Apparently, this style of stout is not uncommon in the Caribbean though that would be a mystery to me; what I do know is that I enjoyed it very much
