A smoked rye stout from Mystery.Poures more a deep roasted chesnut color with a tinge of burgundy,a thinner off white head atop.Aromas of chocolate and smoke mainly, light lactic rye notes as well. All components of the beer stand out nicely with roastiness and bitter chocolate stout flavors, hardwood smoke and earthy smoked notes, and a sharp spicy rye finish.A solid smoked offering here, the palate is layered nicely.Come on Lions hold the lead!

Look: It is dark brown in color with a brown head. The head retention is low.

Smell: It has a malty sweet aroma with a hints of herbal hops. There is a good background note of smoked that creates added complexity. There is very low fruit as well.

Taste: The sweet malt and smoke mixed together quite well and are in balance. There are also spicy and herbal notes with some moderate bitterness.

Feel: It has a moderate body with low carbonation and some alcohol warmth.

Overall, the balance between the malt and smoke is about even with the other aromas and flavors adding some complexity in the background.

We don't get off on the right foot, me and this 'un... it goes a gusher as soon as I pop the tab. After it gets done with its little outburst, a light-handed pour produces a fine-grained medium brown head that disappears almost immediately, leaving behind the barest of collars and nothing else. Lacing consists of scant thin bands that immediately retreat back into the beer, a dark brown affair with dusty orange highlights and the most effervescence I've ever seen in a beer. The aroma is modest (too much so), predominately smoky chocolate with some deeper toffee notes and a hint of fish oil. The flavor- chocolate and cocoa with some darker toffee notes and hints of raisins and booze- is a bit more pronounced, but it is all but obliterated halfway across the palate by the soda-like, distractingly over-aggressive carbonation. It finishes the same, with the carbonation being the only thing to note, and an undifferentiated dark malty aftertaste lingers for but a moment. The mouthfeel is thinnish for the medium-full body, and offputtingly prickly; this is a very unpleasant beer to drink as a consequence. My overall rating tells the real story here; properly carbonated and with a proper stout mouthfeel, this beer would probably rate 3.25, maybe 3.5; as it is, it's no better than a 2. The brew tastes great, the rye stout flavor is very satisfying. The mouthfeel on this brew is a bit thin, and the carbonation is a little low for my liking. The spot light of this brew is the taste. With a few adjustments, this beer would really be something.

Poured into a Funky Buddha Brewery snifter. Unlabeled sample bottle from the brewery.

A- Pours a mostly opaque black color with a 1/8 inch light brown head that bears little retention time before immediately dissolving to a thin ring around the edge of the glass and a couple small patches of surface foam. Nearly no lacing.

S- Big dark roast aroma with some mild smoke and char. Also a hint of booze.

T- Moderate dark roast bitterness turns to a subtle smoky finish. Slight hop bitterness. Pretty drinkable although I'm not fully digging the aftertaste. It's not the smoke, like I thought would be the turn-off, but something else I can't place. Also shouldn't be the rye, as I like rye. Ah, that's what it is: too much alcohol flavor on the back end.

M- Somewhat thin and dry with low carbonation and a lightish body.

O- The mouthfeel is what turned the knife in this one. Lacking carbonation and body.
