Formerly known as POTUS 44.
A robust porter brewed with malts roasted in a coffee roaster, giving an enticing aroma and deep notes of chocolate, coffee, and hints of caramel. Pairs well with smoked meats, shepherd’s pie, and cheesecake.

Had this on tap in a shaker pint for dinner in Nashville. My first choice was not available due to the recent tornado in Nashville, but this was a pleasant surprise.
Poured dark brown color with nice head and lacing. Dark roasted malt smell and taste, some coffee and chocolate. Nice rich feel. I would get it again.

This was about 110 days old when consumed. Nice brown body with inch white head. Great aroma of coffee and chocolate malt. Taste was same with a little light smoke. Very flavorful for under 5% abv. Light to moderate body makes it suitable for year round drinking.

A porter with coffee not much creativity. Not a bad taste but doesn't wow me. A little too acidic and flat. Very thick pour.

With the name of Black Abbey, the expectations of great dark ale are high. Brewing a staple robust porter might be the easy part, but when adding coffee, the brewery shows great restraint by using a blend of the softer and earthier Hawaiian and Kenyan coffees that are careful not to overwhelm the base beer.
Dark brown and capped with a creamy sand tinted froth, the coffee influences are immediate. Its robust scent of coffees and toasted grains apply a cloud of heavy toast, chocolate, nuttiness and the peppery, earthy, soilish scent across the nose. Hearty sweetness of dark chocolate, dry toffee and buckwheat honey greet the tongue with a strongly toasted malt medley.
A slow recession of sweetness occurs over a long span on the middle palate. Impressions of deeply roasted grains offer its own coffee influence just as dark cocoa-rich chocolate, roasted walnut and nearly burnt toast keep the flavors hinging on burnt. The coffee comes with a chicory spice, scorched earth and nutty flavor as well. Hints of campfire rise as the dark ale turns to a moderatly resinous taste of singed pine needles.
Medium full in body, the robust taste has the senses seeing the beer's weight as fuller but the coffee spice, coffee liquor warmth and woodsy hops help to ease the bulk of textures late for a nearly high rate of drinkability. A long and toasty aftertaste is simply a smidge away roast which would make the beer a stout, but stops shyly in front.
