Black Abbey Brewing Co. "The Special"
on tap at the brewery
Belgian-style mild, 5.8% ABV, 13 IBUs

Appearance: Black body with ruby highlights beneath a short head of creamy light tan. Decent head retention and lacing.

Aroma: Dark skinned fruit (fig, prune, raisin). Softly floral. Some minor yeasty minerals and esters (clove?).

Flavor: The flavor adds sharper fruit (cherry, orange), darkish caramel, and soft bittersweet chocolate. A moderate bitterness balances it and it finishes dry with some yeasty mineral and sharp fruit.

Mouthfeel: Medium to medium-light in body with a smooth, velvety fine-bubbled carbonation that gives a gentle zest and then light caress.

Overall: It's interesting that they've labeled this as a mild at 5.8% ABV but I can totally see that. I found it to be a very relaxing beer that I wanted to spend time with. It's not overly rich or complicated, and yet it's on the edge of becoming that. (As an aside, after having had it at the brewery several servers at other places within Nashville recommend it to me - that says something).

Compared to Rochefort 6, this one holds its own. A bit darker in color, but with an equally resilient head. The aroma was actually quite similar, fruit-forward with plum, some caramel and a hint of cherry. There was also a faint estery note that was hard to articulate. The taste was actually quite similar and fruit-forward, with plum, cherries, and a deeper sweetness with dark Candi sugar and caramel. The hard-to-describe estery note was also there. Medium bodied with bright carbonation. Now that I am comparing this to the Trappist greats, I must say that I am quite impressed. Cheers!

Lovely black with large-bubble persistent head. Brisk mouthfeel with solid malt, good effervescence and modest hoppy finish. This is a nice beerfor many occasions. Best as a dessert beer, but it could accompany roast beef, pork tenderloin, or even barbequed ribs. A good well- rounded brew.
