Notes / Commercial Description:
Viking history in Scotland goes back a thousand years. Even our brewmaster studied in Edinburgh, where he carefully surveyed the local brew. Now we return with an Icelandic Scotch Ale, brewed with locally farmed and smoked barley and spiced with native Icelandic angelica – a fabled herb ancient Vikings used as currency. Surrender your taste buds. They have no choice but to be conquered.

Dark, sweet and rich wee heavy. Maybe a touch too sweet though. Good brew with a cigar as it cuts right through even the most potent stogie. On my last bottle of a six pack bought a while back. Not sure if I'd buy again. Would pick something like Founders Dirty Bastard over this.

Dark ruby brown and clear with a finger or two of tan foam... Produces impressions of shellac, peat smoke, and gin... Faint caramelized wood and vegetal notes, too... Moderately bitter in a resinous way - but without any chewiness, as the body is relatively medium-light weight - though there is a bit of stickiness up front, it dries out quickly as something akin to juniper and oak come come through... The sweetness is also very mild - suggestive of watered down molasses or brown sugar, it, too, flashes and then fades... I could see this beer not hitting all all the marks for some people, but it is very compelling to me; featuring angelica root, it has a taste and "historical" vibe to it like a sahti, gruit, or Gotlandsdricka... Really cool...

Pours a clear chestnut brown color. Thin tan head dissipates quickly leaving no residual head.

Aroma has some smoked caramel malt notes, wood, earthy nutty notes, and some dark fruit notes.

Taste follows the nose with a nice malt forward profile. Notes of caramel, toffee, dark bread, earthy nutty malts and a spiced herbal note come through on the back end.

Feel is medium bodied with lively carbonation. Although its a hefty beer it retains an easy drinking character.

Overall this is a lovely wee heavy that marries a unique twist while being faithful to the style. Well done and I will certainly revisit this one again.

Poured from fridge temp. Pours a nice dark amber with decent carbonation. Nose if fairly subtle, with nice caramel, wood chips, pine, and a nutty note. Taste is really interesting. Getting a nice smoky bitterness upfront, with a nice caramel backbone. The sweetness lingers. Definitely getting a bit of citrus peel, pine, and some leather as well. Quite dry on the palate. Mouthfeel is a bit thin for the style, but overall this is a nice wee heavy.

Not as smooth as other scotch ales, almost a hybrid between a scotch and a pale. Great aftertaste

Pours murky, reddish-brown in color with 1/4 inch head. Taste is peat, heather, lavender, brown sugar, and smoke. Medium bodied, low carbonation, and sweet. Really tasty for a style that I do not get often. Nice and clean flavors. Really impressed.
