Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.60%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Formerly Icelandic Pale Ale

American and Bavarian craft come together with the finest Icelandic water to create the Viking version of the Pale Ale, where robust hoppiness meets smooth malty undertones. Cascade hops give it the American character, while Northern Brewer hops add just enough bitterness to make this Ale refreshingly Icelandic.

This pours a honeyed amber yellow color with serious foam that tightly compacts once it dies down. There’s a honeyed sweetness rounding out the lightly hopped aroma, and an almost-tropical, pineapple-like hop profile. Lightly hopped with an upfront bittering tailing into a touch of resiny pine. Lightly flavored with tropical hop flavors and a slightly dry finish that is very agreeable. I noticed a light toast on the malt that comes across as it warms. The second of this brewery’s beer that I’ve tried—both have been noticeably crisp and it makes me wonder if there really is something in the water up north.

Appearance: Pours hazy and amber colored with a sturdy head a finger high; dribbles of lace

Smell: Bready, with grass and cedar tones

Taste: A bready base underpins the hop tones; primarily grassy, with a hint of cedar; the hops outlast the malt in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Decent, but not memorable; at the very least I can say I have tried a beer from Iceland

Clear golden color with white cap and lacing.

Cascade, Northern Brewer and Hallertau Tradition hops give this one a light, floral, spicy air with a smidge of malt aroma in the background.

Flavor on entry is made up of equal parts of malt and the combined hops. Well balanced, neither leaning toward malt or hops, it comes across as a relatively complex though nondescript generic pale ale whose best attribute seems to be it's friendly drinkability.

Medium texture with balancing carbonation.

Brewed 60 miles south of the Arctic Circle which is as close as I ever wish to get. It's actually a rather pleasant pale ale that's easy to like.

Pours hazy, golden-brown in color with 1/4 inch head that goes quickly. Taste is pale malt, toffee, honey, and husk. Above average, semi-sticky body, but tasty. Not very hop forward. I would get this one again, but I prefer others in the style.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into IPA glass.

Appearance: Light amber with decent head and lacing.

Smell: Caramel, toast, citrus and noble hop spiciness.

Taste: Caramel and toasted malt backbone. Hops are a mix of citrus and noble hop earth, herbal and spice notes. Slightly bitter finish.

Feel: Medium body, moderate carbonation, dry finish.

Overall: Basically like a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale with a more Germanic hop influence.

A 330ml bottle with a BB of Aug 2012. Picked up from my local beer specialist. I like the hard viking dude on the label.

Poured into a Sam Smith's pint glass. A clear, deep golden-amber colour with good carbonation. Yields a large head of frothy off-white foam that subsides rapidly. Aroma of aromatic hops underpinned by light caramel malt. Notes of grapefruit, citrus and grain. Nice.

Tastes of light malt with an aromatic hop character and a crisp bitter finish. Slight malty sweetness. Notes of grapefruit, citrus, grain and faint yeast esters. A hint of diacetyl in the background. A dry bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and prickly, with decent body. Mildly astringent. Aftertaste of aromatic hops.

A pretty good effort, particularly coming from so close to the arctic circle. The aroma is pleasing, with a good dose of citrus hops. The flavour is similar, but the hop character is weaker - the taste doesn't quite match the quality that the aroma promises. Nonetheless, it's certainly drinkable and goes down nicely. Can't wait to try more from this brewery.

Appearance: This one was brewed about 7 months ago, so it’s not the freshest, and regards are given for this. Pours a copper-amber, clean and with a fair off-white head and very little lace.

Aroma: Citrus and floral hops, and some malty grains as well. Subtle, but appealing.

Taste: Hops again, with the citrus and floral notes again, and some bitterness at finish. A solid pale ale, even aged a bit, but far from notable. I’d love to revisit it much fresher one day!
