Icelandic Arctic Pale AleIcelandic Arctic Pale Ale
Notes: Formerly Icelandic Pale Ale

American and Bavarian craft come together with the finest Icelandic water to create the Viking version of the Pale Ale, where robust hoppiness meets smooth malty undertones. Cascade hops give it the American character, while Northern Brewer hops add just enough bitterness to make this Ale refreshingly Icelandic.

I had taken a break from The Eradication of The Bottle Backlog on the 4th of July to visit The CANQuest (tm) for the day. I stocked my reefer a little too heavily & now I have a BUNCHA cold CANs that I want to run through before returning to those pesky bottles.

From the CAN: "Triple-Hopped For Flavor and Balance"; "Brewed 60 miles south of the Arctic Circle, we balance three kinds of hops with pure Icelandic water to create an ale unlike any other. It can only be described as an Arctic Pale Ale and it’s truly one of a kind. Cascade hops give it American character, while Northern Brewer and Hallertau Tradition add just enough bitterness to make this ale refreshingly Icelandic – and to make everything else pale in comparison."

Having Crack!ed the CAN open & not having learned from the previous Witbier from Einstök Ölgerð (Einstök Beer Company), I got caught up in a moment of excitement & CANducted an inverted Glug. This resulted in the onrush of a massive amount of head that I had to back off from & allow to settle before proceeding. Three=plus fingers of dense, rocky, tawny head with excellent retention will always get my attention. Color was Deep Amber/Light Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. Nose had a minty, piney quality which was sort of evocative of cold, clean permafrost. Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium, not watery, but thin for the style. The taste was minty, but not as intense as the nose had led me to expect, underlain with a biscuity maltiness. Finish was semi-dry, refreshing on a hot, humid summer's day, but not enough to make me want more than one.

Appearance: Pours hazy and amber colored with a sturdy head a finger high; dribbles of lace

Smell: Bready, with grass and cedar tones

Taste: A bready base underpins the hop tones; primarily grassy, with a hint of cedar; the hops outlast the malt in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Decent, but not memorable; at the very least I can say I have tried a beer from Iceland

Clear golden color with white cap and lacing.

Cascade, Northern Brewer and Hallertau Tradition hops give this one a light, floral, spicy air with a smidge of malt aroma in the background.

Flavor on entry is made up of equal parts of malt and the combined hops. Well balanced, neither leaning toward malt or hops, it comes across as a relatively complex though nondescript generic pale ale whose best attribute seems to be it's friendly drinkability.

Medium texture with balancing carbonation.

Brewed 60 miles south of the Arctic Circle which is as close as I ever wish to get. It's actually a rather pleasant pale ale that's easy to like.

Poured from a bottle into pint glass in December 2014.

Appearance: Medium red color, that is a bit cloudy. The head is thick and light colored, or off-tan. The head lasted a very long time, and left a nice coating on the inside of the glass.

Smell: Pleasant, with a hops influence. The is some citrus flavors in the aroma, as well as a spices. The various aromas make for an interesting contrast.

Taste: An interesting mix of hops, citrus, and herbs in the flavor, that make for an interesting APA, but with a little bit of sweetness. There is a nice after-taste, that lasts for a while but not too long.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and crisp, with a medium body.

Overall: This is an interesting APA. There is a variety of flavors, but none of these flavors overshadow the other flavors. Good when a lighter beer (hops are not too strong and not very malty) is desired.

Pours a clear darker golden color with off-white head. Floral notes, grass, and a little citrus and malt on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes pretty balanced between the hops and malt.
