3 Guys & A Beer'd "Endless Summer Beer"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, "EXP 112915"

Judging a beer to style versus simply rating it hedonistically can sometimes be a problem. In this case what seems like a very good "summer ale" is labelled as an "Extra Special Bitter Ale", and unfortunately it doesn't quite cut it as such.

Appearance: Hazy golden body beneath a short-lived head of white. Poor head retention and lacing, even for a style that has a minimal carbonation level and, in this case, a medium-light body.

Aroma: Fruity with notes of apple and pear, and a very slight hint of funkiness not unlike apple cider and soft barnyard (that's actually quite pleasant, but inappropriate for the style... and could possibly be due to the age and handling it received going through distribution). Hop aromas seem to be missing, although I'm not sure if there's some earthiness coming from the hops, or if that's just from whatever the funkiness is (seems like minor Brettanomyces). Stylistically, even for a bitter with a straightforward golden maltiness, it's lacking as well.

Flavor: Although there are more hops and malt to the flavor, the minor funkiness remains, and I think I'll have to review this beer again next year despite the fact that my sample still has almost 3 months remaining before "expiration". (On the other hand, as a fan of sour beers I'm considering looking for a case of this to see how it develops as I find it quite interesting). As an "ESB" the one thing that it definitely misses the mark on is bitterness, although I feel it's a bit light on maltiness as well. It's definitely at the lower end of the spectrum, yet what is there is balanced. The fruitiness remains forward, and it's exciting and refreshing.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light in body, and very moderate in carbonation. Having just returned from England in May, I can say that even within cask-conditioned bitters I've never found one that's been quite so soft.

Overall: Hedonistically I love it, but stylistically it misses the mark.

Its an ok beer. It is not what I expected from an ESB. It poured an amber color, and reminded me of a Yuengling lager with color and taste. I didn't think it would sell well but guests were receptive to it. I also really like the owners of the brewery and I want to do all I can to support them. I would carry this beer again.
