this is a great big giant beer, imperial stout of the highest order, aged in port wine and whiskey barrels, pretty interesting and intense stuff, boozy for sure, but also really well refined at the same time. this dark stuff is what has been impressing me most from 4 hands lately. i get licorice and burnt tobacco notes on the nose, heavy red wine, port for sure, with hints of black cherry and walnut to it, plenty of oak, and then a hint of vanilla too from the whiskey, but almost no sweetness here at all. lots of bitterness, both dark roasted barley, unmalted black barley i would think, and some barrel char, its ashy and earthy and extremely intense. the body is huge, the alcohol is hot, and the port is the only balancing element to all the abyssal depth of this base stout, holy cow. i really like the port wine and the whiskey together, this is a cool barrel treatment, and its unique clearly shows through the beer, even this enormous beast of a beer! tons of roast, coffee, licorice, and booze. just perfect on a rainy afternoon, but something i would caution against drinking a lot of, this is a hangover waiting to happen! these guys keep killing it with the dark stuff!

L: jet black with very thin carb dissipating to no head
S: vanilla, brown sugar, hint of grape or plum, but the whiskey notes prevail
T: fruit shows up here for sure. Black cherry, prunes, with a little chocolate and little bitterness.
F: full coating mouthfeel with some oaky dryness. Light carb, but noticeable
O: if you told me this was a whiskey-barrel aged quad, I might believe you. Amazing that they draw out both the whiskey and port character in this beer. Quite enjoyable.

1. Impressive barrel aging
2. Complex blend of vanilla, port, chocolate, and bourbon.
3. Smooth, easy to drink, with a warming effect.
