Black in color with very little light penetrating it when held up to light. There's a fingernail of beige around most of the rim. There's also a fair amount of minuscule carbonation bubbles erupting from within. The aroma is of a plethora of barley, vanilla, sweet bourbon, and caramel. I'm tasting sweet barley, a touch of grassy hops, vanilla, caramel, and bourbon. the mouth is sticky, thick, and chewy.

Wow this tasted exactly as advertised, "huge notes of toffee, caramel, vanilla and bourbon dominate this thick and chewy beer". Thick is debatable, but definitely chewy and highly textured from barley, with sweeter elements ruling at the end of the day. I also get some plum and fig as well. Smell is so strong it is almost too much! A brighter barleywine for sure, a dessert in a glass. The wife loved it too

Pours a very dark brown that is nearly black. Head is just shy of foaming up to a finger in height, and doesn't retain very well. Aroma is light toffee, caramel and molasses with a barleywine characteristic sugary aroma. Beyond the sugar notes are toasted, nutted, and caramel malts. There is light bourbon and biting char present as well. Good depth to the aroma. Flavor profile is caramel, toffee, molasses, butter, and light syrup. Toasted, nutted, and caramel malts give it a firm base, with roasted malts adding to the darkness and complexity. Malts form a moderate to slightly bitter base with the sugary notes tipping the scale towards the 'sweet' side (vs. bitter). Bourbon and char show themselves, especially as the beer warms. There is a good level of heat, without it ever being over bearing. It's a complimentary relationship between base beer and barrel. Mouth feel is medium in thickness with a lightly creamy texture. Overall, a barleywine that earns the names, but does lack a slight bit of balance. A little extra alcohol may have balanced it out slightly better.

Served in a Teku 3.0 from a 22oz bottle.

good god 4 hands. this is something else. deep, deep reddish brown with a creamy tightly packed head that still sits as a sliver on top. aroma is a smack in the nose in the best way, lots of dark fruits, boozy warmth, vanilla and grains. some chocolate sweetness lets itself in later. the flavor on this is superb with tons of dark fruit, toffee and vanilla, with a bitter lingering flavor that just begs you to have some more. i shouldn't be drinking this so quickly. thick and chewy is a good way to describe how this feels. at 10 bucks for a bomber of this you should drink it.

This beer looks like cola on the pour, but walnut brown in the glass. A slow pour for the first 2/3, then aggressive on the last bit leads to a beautiful, creamy head with very minute, tightly packed bubbles. Legs, as expected at 11.5%, are evident, with some small particulate clinging to the side of the glass.

The nose is not shy, with molasses, vanilla, prunes, caramel, and woody, earthy hops taking up the rear. This barley wine's nose is complex, begging for repeat visits. Chocolate covered raisins came out as it warmed.

The first sip explodes with huge notes of toffee, dark molasses, prunes, raisins, dates, and almost a "creamed" bourbon sweetness. The ABV is not sharp in this beer, which allows for repeated sips, but by no means is this a crusher.

Mouth feel is medium plus to heavy, with a good amount of carbonation that leaves your mouth with a coating, lingering finish.

Overall I liked this more than Backwoods Bastard, which is comparable flavor wise. Lots more dark fruit, and the hops are dialed back. It's not better, just different. A wonderful beer worth seeking out.

From a bomber, this beer is intense. Dark brown in color with some ruddy hues. The aroma is wildly malty with dark fruit and grain notes. Intense alcohol and booze soaked berries in the nose. Sweet but not cloying, full and thick body. Excellent barley wine.
