Style: American Brown Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This is one monster of a Brown Ale! We use an obnoxious amount of chocolate malt and roasted barley to give this beer a cask iron backbone. Our oatmeal brown pours a dark mahogany with aromas of dark chocolate and coffee.

Tasted in a snifter from draft at O'Toole's on September 19, 2017. Look is dark mahogany. Smell is dark chocolate and fresh roasted coffee beans. Feel is medium to full in body.

Forgive the bad descions, but it should be plausible to drink an oatmeal at 10am. This doesn't feel like a meal; it feels like a stale root beer with chocolate syrup dumped in.

At least it tastes decent?

Poured from 12 oz. can into frosty pint glass. Pours dark chocolate brown with a thin tan head. Leaves some oily lace on the glass that doesn't last. Solid tasting chocolate brown ale with a hint of coffee. Light to medium bodied.

Light brown, and then kidney bean color when held to the light. Head is foamy and 2 fingers tall, leaving lots of lace on the sides as it recedes to a sliver.

Smells like a melted chocolate bar, with hints of just barely toasted malts and unsweetened cocoa. Some metal.

Flavor comes out bringing much of what's on the nose, but in a more condensed, firm form. Roast barley, basic barley, with hints of cocoa and nut, some metallic notes coming forward more and more as the beer warms.

Feel is dry and roasty, typically biting chalkily as most brown ales do.

Overall, not a bad brown ale at all. I'd say it's among the best out right now.

12oz can with a date of 02/28/17 on the bottom. Dark brown color with minimal head that quickly disappeared. Just a little bit of spotty lacing is left down the glass. Aroma of chocolate, dark fruit, and coffee beans. Flavor starts off with nice chocolate notes then there is a little sweet fruit with a finish that is slightly acidic. Body feels fuller than the ABV would suggest thanks to the added oats. Nice carbonation. Not a bad beer but just didn't click for me. Did not care for the "stale" take on a brown ale.

Bottled 2/4/14; drank 7/6/14 @ the Yarchives.

Poured from a can into a glass.

Brown hue; purple near the edges.

HUGE tan head; nice lace.

Oats, cream & coffee nose; mild but pleasant.

Medium thick, creamy mouthfeel.

Creamy oats & mocha up front; mild hop bite on the finish. So yeah, it's mild but interesting & satisfying enough to be a solid fall session beer.

On-tap at Bailey's Range, on to the beer:

This dark brown beer manages to string a few rings of lace around the glass. That's only a sneak peak however, as the aroma is fantastic. It is nutty with pleasing toffee, sweet, and overall a wonderful thing to smell. It is also a wonderthing to taste and drink. Although medium bodied, this beer is bliss! Nutty overall with fun toffee topping, a light roast, and the notes hit you in the right places. This is one brown ale I will be missing out in Orange County.
