I really didnt like this one. Smelled like my grandmothers basement; very musty and like dirt. There was a very nice head after poured from a 1pint 9oz corked bottle into a wide mouthed red wine glass. Lots of yeast particles and sediment floating around made the beer look like dirty lake water captured in a glass. Tasted like dirty water. Maybe I had an old bottle (although expiration date says 01 09 06), but this was not good at all. Satan has definitely won this battle as he has defeated me and I will not be back for a rematch.

Opaque brown-bronze. White film of head, dots of lace. Lots of dirty rum raisin malt on the nose, sweet. Flavor is similar; earthy grape skin, apple, fair bit of whiskey-like caramel booze and some outright ethanol. Pretty embarrassing for being only 8%. Finish has a noticeable but mild amount of pine hop bitterness. Feel is oily creamy smooth, tiny bumps of carbonation.
Nasty beer, but not so bad that I couldn't finish the bottle to extract its (readily noticeable) alcohol.

Obtained from a fridge at the World of Beer in Clearwater, Fl.

A: Copper-gold, off-white head, only a little retention.

S: Sulphur? Soapy, floral hops.

T: Sweet caramel, slight tartness, hint of spice, mulled cider, a little leather.

M: Light to moderate body, carbonation higher than moderate, slightly creamy and acidic.

D: Not so good.

This beer pours a amber, orange color and has a small head that sticks nicely to the glass.

Smell of green and red, ripe apples that appear to be quite solventy and fusel like. It is pretty fresh and malty at the same time.

Taste is fresh, green apples with the fusels again, and it makes an slight tart impression. Some notes of grapes and white wine. Body is thin and drinkability is quite good. The apple taste is starting to bore me after some sips and I strongly believe that this beer has too much sugar in it. This is what I would describe: a headache beer, but we'll see that tomorrow!

Bought at Drankenhandel Geers.

Amber beer with a reddish tint. In itself a decent enough beer, though I've come to expect more from any 8% ABV beer.

The taste itself is surprisingly soft or mild as the commercial description puts it, the aftertaste yeasty and malty. No bitterness at all; I bet this would make a nice beer in warmer weather though again, it doesn't quite feel like 8%.
Traditional ingredients (no spices) and accordingly traditional, yet good taste.

one of the coolest bottle caps in my collection. if i could rate that, twould be a 5 fo sho.

appearance is dark orange with a stable, foamy head. leaves impressive thick lacing on glass. no mountains of bubbles, and a low low carbonation factor in the body

smells yeasty, with a sour citrus tinge.. very much like a gueuze. very different, unique aroma for a beer of this style. mild butterscotch as well in the scent.

this beer has some mild tripel flavors and nothing much else. what a shock after the delicious nose. lemon, butter, yeast and malt. nothing impressive here.

Pours a cloudy rust color with noticeable flakes of sediment floating throughout. Nose has a tart fruitiness and a bit of a pungent aroma. Taste has the same tart fruitiness along with a yeastiness that seems a bit off and some leathery notes. I found it a bit rough to get through the whole beer.

I've had Duvel and Lucifer so why not Satan? Pours a nice golden color with a slight orange hue. No real aroma to speak of-slight citrusy smell but whats there is pushed aside by phenolics. Slight malty flavor with a trace of sweetness. Some cloves and spiciness to it. No real thrill. Its just sort of there. Ok body-somewhat "bright" in character. Really nothing to write home about overall.

The beer poured into the chalice clear deep amber with an off white head which rose extremely tall and fell very slowly to coat the glass.

The aroma was low with a slight acidic pungency like a Oud Bruin. There were some vegetal aromatics of cooked cabbage, but not much else.

The flavor was slightly acidic and slightly sour with some malt and some earthy hop presence. Also some vegetal flavors, again cooked cabbage, emerged as the beer warmed.

The finish was dry with a very slight lasting sourness. The body was I believe this beer was infected and will have to rate another at some later date. I see other reviews remarking about the sourness, so perhaps that was what they were trying for, if so the mark was missed.

11.2 ounce bottle. Thanks jimdkc and BIF20 (theme beer). Best before 24/10/2005 (October seems like a stretch).

330ml brown bottle ($2.99)

A-as it pours, it looks remarkably golden, but when in the glass, it presents itself with a nice orange/red body. The tightly dense head lightly sticks to the glass. Tons of carbonation. Plenty of yeast sediment.

S-Not a whole lot going on. Slight spiciness is there but nothing dominant.

T-slightly watered taste with dry booziness. This beer seems a bit oxidized and past its prime. I poured in settled yeast from the bottle and it gave it a much nuttier taste. Slight notes of burnt caramel. Yeast is not as fruity as I would have expected.

M-Carbonation levels give this one a sharp mouthfeel. Dry finish comes off a bit weird for some reason.

D-Without extra yeast from bottle it is an okay BSPA, but with it, it is a bit too much. There are definitely tons of better BSPAs out there.

Having heard that Satan Red was inspired by Duvel, I was anxious to give it a try ... poured from a 12oz bottle ...

A: A lively golden ale with a slight hint of reddish tones. Good, generous head with solid lacing.

S: Green apples, yeast, some citrus notes, and a sort of "sourdough" quality as well.

T: Interesting. This is no Duvel clone. You can taste the alcohol at 8% along with the confirmation of green apple, citrus, and a bready taste. Aftertaste is rather dry, and not particularly remarkable. Slight sour finish. A little "watered down" I think ... not as bold a taste as I would have hoped.

M: Thinner than expected, and not all that remarkable. Slight alcohol warmth in the throat. Pretty highly carbonated.

D: Given it's thinner than expected characteristics, this Belgian is easily consumed, but not necessarily joyfully consumed. This isn't at all a bad ale, but my expectations were not met here. There are better ales in this style ... Duvel being the most obvious.

Bottle Inspection: Lists a contemplative imp, 8% abv., a best before 2008/04/21 (sampled 2006/12/08), and the fact it’s brewed and bottled in Belgium.

Aroma: Firm spicy yeast nose. Mild malt and hop notes deep in the yeast. Very odd, and unfair, but I swear I get a mild “sewer” note from the smell as it warmed. Nothing outrageous and it didn’t put me off the beer, but I had to note it.

Appearance: Dumped the last finger of the bottle due to sediment, the remainder shows a clear red amber glass with carbonation streams dancing with white protein chunks. Yum! Heavy lacing of the tulip glass from a lasting solid cover of off white foam.

Flavor: Sweet and spicy. A borderline cloying malt characteristic is set off by the firm spicy yeast note. Hops seemed to have checked out last week, as only a ghost remains.

Mouthfeel: A touch fizzy, medium body.

Overall Impression: The overall characteristic is the yeast profile, which isn’t bad, but not enough to build a beer on. Worth a try, worth a karma point, but nothing I’ll crave, or possibly even try again. Pairing it with Triskets and sharp cheddar helped a lot.

Pours amber with thick off-white head. Smells slightly yeasty, but mostly neutral. Sweet taste with some yeast, but very light feeling and not much depth to the flavors. Finishes with a bit of citrus and spice, but it's very tame.

330ml Bottle on 3rd Feb 2014 in Cambrinus, Brugge.

As the name suggests, this has a red hue to it's body colour, although it really has an orange amber beer. The head didn't hang around, it was beige when it was there.

Sweet fruits rule the nose and taste, mild apple feel with plenty of fizz in the body. Too pop like for me to be honest. I had this years ago and don't remember it being so heavily carbonated.

OK, but with so many great beers available in Belgium I'll not be buying a crate of this.

I fear that this beer relies on its label to sell it more than what's inside. Pours murky orange with a big tan head. Aroma is fruity and yeasty, but jumbled. Taste is unremarkable. Sugar and coriander, with a lot of malt and yeast. Even with the big head, the beer came across as flat due to the flavor. Don't bother.

Pours a ruddy copor color with LOADS of sediment floating around. I didn't even pour the bottom into the glass like I usually do. Decent frothy head that hangs around on this brew.

Aroma is of alcohol mainly and slight fruitiness. Smells a lot like a Brut champagne. Some phenolic and yeasty tones are in there as well.

Taste is of fruitiness, white grapes, orange peel, ready, tons of alcohol right up front in the taste. Pretty tart as well, combating the fruity sweetness. Finishes semi-dry with more alcohol burn.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, velvety, with lots of tiny bubbly, champagne like carbonation.

I wouldnt consider this beer to be very drinkable. Too much alcohol presence in this beer. I would have thought this beer was up in the 12% abv range if I didn;t know beforehand it was 8.0%.

They're not kidding weren’t kidding when they named it satan. Pours vibrantly red and range with a substantial one inch head. Tastes heavily of alcohol sickly sweet, almost like bad champagne. Quite frankly other than its appearance; this beer has very little going for it. Tremendous amounts of sediment in the pour, not a big fan of that. Mediocre at best.

A deep golden peachy colour, with a massive compact head, leaving a spotty lace. Bready aroma, with some fruit and spices (coriander) and alcohol. Not too much complexity. Taste is simple too, fruit cake, some cherry touch and a hint of spices. Average beer.

Sorry but this following comment is in french :

Appearance : bière ambrée, mousse compacte et tenace, bonne effervescence
Smell : nez fruité, arômes de levure
Taste and mouthfeel : en bouche elle est un peu piquante, légére tofféfaction, amertume faible et assez courte
Drinkability : une bière correcte dans le style Belgian strong ale
