Drawn from a cask, there was a beautiful cascade effect as the beer settled into the pint glass. The head is about 2 fingers and extremely creamy due to the cask effect. Not much of an aroma to speak of. Mildly hoppy and floral, but the impression is the thick head blocks the smell. The taste is great! Mild bitterness with a wonderful background floral hops presence. Very tasty and easy to drink. It is extremely creamy with very little carbonation. This was a slight turnoff, as a little bit more carbonation would have made this beer excellent. As it is, it is very good and very drinkable. Nothing beats fresh, local beer!

I live in Colorado Springs and have often had occasion to sample Phantom Canyon brews. Their IPA is exceptional. It has a lovely cloudy soft copper color, a creamy head with lots of foam and lacing. The bouquet is lovely: lots of fruity hops with some underlying malt. The initial flavor has a pleasant bite of bitter hops, as you would expect from an IPA: and then the palate is caressed by grapefruit, floral and pine. The middle is nicely malted, the mouthfeel under-carbonated, almost syrupy in texture. The finish is wonderfully crisp and bitter. Very drinkable, in limited quantities: it is a heavy beer. You won’t soon forget the unique experience!

Appearance: Pours a slighty hazy pale copper with an off-white head that holds like crazy and leaves lots of sticky lace. Exceptional head retention for a cask-conditioned beer.

Smell: The aroma is quite fragrant, with a good hop presence that comes from the use of some of the four C's. A bit of malt hides underneath, barely noticable.

Taste: The flavor is firmly bitter, with a wide range of hop flavors: citrus, pine, and flowers. There's a good solid foundation of malt, but it stays in the background, coming in a distant second to the hop flavor and bitterness. Finishes smooth and bitter.

Mouthfeel: Creamy and smooth, with the mouthfeel that can only come from a cask.

Drinkability: Good overall drinkability. This is a good IPA, with a lot of hop character.

This beer came via a beer of the month club. It was brewed by Riverside Brewing in California. It's a good friend of mine (AKSmokedPorter) who actually received the beer. I was fortunate enough that he shared a Phantom IPA with me, but unfortunate enough that it was only one. This is a very good beer. While I'm a little leerie of being so positive about it based on only one experience with one bottle, I really enjoyed this one. It's pretty hoppy and spicy but has more of a balanced flavor than say a Stone IPA or AV Hop Ottin IPA. Very drinkable. Nice hoppy aroma. For whatever reason, my pour with this beer resulted in a glassful of head. Definitley one I'd like to have again, but unfortunately, I don't think that's too promising. AKSmokedPorter checked with the beer club and they had no more available. Maybe they were saving it all for themselves.

This review is for the bottled version made for one of the Michael Jackson Beer Clubs...contract brewed at Riverside Brewing Co. in Riverside CA.

A classic American style IPA brewed with the 3 C's: Columbus, Centennial, and Cascade. Dry Hopped with the latter two.

Dark Copper, Low head retention. Awesome Hoppy, Citrusy, Grapefruity Aroma and Taste. Med Bodied and creamy, and smooth! Nice Balance but definitely leans bitter.

One of my favorite IPA's next to Celebration Ale...
