Phantom Canyon BC is conveniently located across from the Antlers Hilton and within walking distance of the other downtown brewpubs (Il Vicino and Judge Baldwins'). For the complete brewpub experience and good beer, the Phantom is the place.

The layout of the dining and bar area is pretty open, with high pressed-tin ceilings and the many high tables and stools in from of the bar. There are booths and regular tables around the perimeter of the L-shaped restaurant. Loud classic rock plays on the stereo. The brewery is located in a glass enclosure in the corner. I visited in the late afternoon just as happy hour began. it was not yet crowded.

They even have free wi-fi, but according to my server, the problem is that the college students that live in the apartments above the restaurant connect to it and eat up the bandwidth sometimes. I had trouble getting any activity and the manager offered to help me get a better connection on one of their private routers. As for the attentiveness of the staff as a whole, they treated me very well.

The beers are clean, tasty and technically sound. But, as some other reviewers noted, they are brewed with the general public in mind, so don't expect strong hop character, except in the IPA. However, they had a peat-smoked porter that was distinctive and uncommon to find in an ordinary brewpub, so the brewer is on-board with craft beer sensibilities. They also cater to individual tastes, so if you order, let's say, their blond ale, they will ask you if you want it in a chilled or room-temperature glass.

The food was excellent. I discovered a new appreciation for green chili salsa. Food was hot, fresh and served fast. Standard brewpub fare on the menu with a slant toward southwestern tastes. Good stuff.

I will go back again.

A solid brewpub in the heart of Colorado Springs. Parking is limited, but if you're visiting and planning to walk around downtown for an hour or two, you can park right behind the building for $5.

It's a big place with a lot of tables, but it didn't feel too packed. Lively but tame.

The service was friendly but a bit slow. It took a while to seat three people with 4+ tables visibly open, but everyone was pleasant and helpful.

The beer is above average for a small brewpub but nothing special. The Alpenglow seemed to be the most popular on tap and was a pretty solid hefeweizen. A B+ hefe, while many American brewers fail to execute the style. Maybe a touch too sweet, but the orange and banana notes are there. I had a flight of four other beers: Succubus, Box Car. Streamliner, and a Session IPA whose name is escaping me. Succubus was a little harsh and unbalanced, but I enjoyed the other 3, particularly the Session. The beer is accessible and straightforward, but not necessarily to its detriment.

The food was actually very good. I was spoiled on my Colorado vacation by restaurants like Rioja and Panzano, so I wasn't quite blown away by the food at Phantom Canyon, but it was very solid pub food. The Bison Patty Melt was cooked perfectly and nicely seasoned. Better than beef, dare I say. A member of my party got the fried chicken, and it looked delicious as well.

Overall, I'd probably be a regular if I lived here. Not exceptional but very high quality.
