Transcribed from notes dated F, 25 Sept 2009.

This was our third (and last) stop of the day on the annual Ale Street News GABF bus tour. Located on the corner of Pikes Peak and Cascade, the the doorway was oriented on an angle to the corner. The m.d.s. was just inside, slightly to the right and incorporated stained glass, which was a recurring theme in the brewpub. The oval bar was at a right-oblique to the door. The bar area was a sea of high, round tables and Captain's chairs with standard tables lining the windows. A word about the windows - they encircled a good 2/3 of the bar area and some of them were topped by stained glass. The windows ended along Cascade where the brewhouse began, also glassed in for my viewing pleasure. The back bar was a blonde wood, stained glass and mirror construct. The Sun Room was a private meeting room on the first floor, just beyond the stairs to the second floor. The second floor housed their extensive Billiards Room with its own abbreviated blonde wood bar and a buncha pool and billiards tables as well as foosball and HDTVs for the NFL Sunday Ticket. I was soooo envious ...

Beers: Both the Phantom IPA and Zebulon's Peated Porter were on cask during our visit and I had both. Yummy! The IPA was fabulous with lots of bitterness on the tongue followed by a pleasant finish. The porter really caught a peaty, smoky flavor to accompany its silky mouthfeel.

Others: Queen's Blonde Ale; Hefeweizen; Railyard Ale; Cascade Amber Ale; Demolition Cream Ale; Downtown Brown; Blueberry Ale and Ginger Wheat.

A solid brewpub in the heart of Colorado Springs. Parking is limited, but if you're visiting and planning to walk around downtown for an hour or two, you can park right behind the building for $5.

It's a big place with a lot of tables, but it didn't feel too packed. Lively but tame.

The service was friendly but a bit slow. It took a while to seat three people with 4+ tables visibly open, but everyone was pleasant and helpful.

The beer is above average for a small brewpub but nothing special. The Alpenglow seemed to be the most popular on tap and was a pretty solid hefeweizen. A B+ hefe, while many American brewers fail to execute the style. Maybe a touch too sweet, but the orange and banana notes are there. I had a flight of four other beers: Succubus, Box Car. Streamliner, and a Session IPA whose name is escaping me. Succubus was a little harsh and unbalanced, but I enjoyed the other 3, particularly the Session. The beer is accessible and straightforward, but not necessarily to its detriment.

The food was actually very good. I was spoiled on my Colorado vacation by restaurants like Rioja and Panzano, so I wasn't quite blown away by the food at Phantom Canyon, but it was very solid pub food. The Bison Patty Melt was cooked perfectly and nicely seasoned. Better than beef, dare I say. A member of my party got the fried chicken, and it looked delicious as well.

Overall, I'd probably be a regular if I lived here. Not exceptional but very high quality.
