Must admit this is one of my personal favorites; really great Saison taste to it! I had other saisons from local breweries and must admit none come close to this awesome beer!

The look is a hazy light amber, like watered down honey but infinitely more appetizing. The smell is delectable- obviously kumquat and traditional saison smell. The taste is amazing- a slightly earthy, tart and sweet taste is covered with kumquat goodness. I didn't know I would enjoy kumquats like that; lesson learned.

A: Zesty lemon essence, mixed with some grain. Lots of funky brett character, the beer finishes with a strong kumquat aroma.

A: Light yellow color with a touch of an orange hue and totally clear. There’s a foamy, slightly off-white head that dissipates to a thin ring. There is some lacing in the glass as well.

T: Crisp, zesty lemon, followed by some grain, and lots of big, juicy kumquat flavor. The beer finishes semi-dry with lingering brett funk.

M: Light bodied with moderately-low carbonation. There is a very mild acidity on the palate.

O: Quite solid. The added Kumquats accentuates the beer’s citrusy, rustic farmhouse character.

Kumquats sound so 2012, however that didn't stop Smog City from brewing one. Joepeter was kind enough to lend me a pour, so thanks! On to the beer:

Light orange colored and topped with a little head. Head retention are lacing are nothing worth noting, but the aroma is. It smells tart and spicy, distinct from any common citrus fruit that I have smelled in a beer. My tongue says that the taste is tart like citrus, but my head says it isn't. There's something different about this saison; it's modestly tart, but it doesn't have the straightforward tartness that I commonly find. However, this beer is favorable. Swimming in a light and relaxed body, this saison puts a spin on an already diverse style.

Bottled 4/2015 thanks to rudzud

Nice fluffy fizzy 1.5 finger sudsy head fades at a med pace, hazy murky golden tan color.

Nose brings a mild juicy kumquat stone fruit with a mix of Brett funk, little Brett B funk and C fruity notes, little tartness, mild phenols and spices, saison farmhouse notes, sour like but not much, nice juicy kumquat.

Taste brings more tart funk, lemony, tangy, slight sour, funky Brett, sour lacto and acidity, big tangy Brett that got a little phenolic, little chemically bad Brett, mild vanilla like and oak tannins perhaps, kumquats and stone fruit is very light, little tangy and touch of bitterness, flesh mostly, mild saison farmhouse funk saison with spices etc, decent funk. Finish dry gritty, lingering funk, light stone fruit kumquat, little bitterness and little tangy.

Mouth is med bod, decent carb.

Overall ok, I think the Brett was good but added a little off characters, fruit was nice in the nose but disappeared on the taste mostly.

Received as an extra in a trade. Shared with JLindros. Bottle #1156.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice crystal clear golden hue when a super fizzy two finger white head that fades to leave thin blanket.

S - Aromas of bright citrus, loads of kumquat (flesh and rind), brett, nice saison notes, real pleasant funk. The fruit notes are nice and bright with good juicy kumquat and barnyard funk.

T - Taste is similar to the nose, lemons, citrus, light malts, brett funk, good saison notes. The kumquat is much much more subtle than on the nose. Light vanilla, oak....was this barrel aged. The funk really pops with the citrus. Nice bitter finish from the citrus, though, perhaps the brett was exposed to too much oxygen.

M - Mouthfeel is brightly carbonated, bitter finish, maybe slightly thin.

O - Overall this beer was pretty nice. Good kumquat notes and nice brett. The finish could stand to be a bit better.

A great addition to the beer, the kumquat taste is subtle, but still present enough for you to know (and enjoy) that it's there. Adds a light and refreshing note to a style that can usually be quite filling. Have had it on draft and in bottles, and either way, it's worth checking out.

I grabbed a few bottles of this from my local bottle shop. It's an amazing saison, with the perfect amount of locally-gathered kumquat added. Pours a light orange/yellow and has a light, fizzy finish. It's not too fruit forward, and has a great balance. I hope this becomes a spring tradition at Smog City. A wonderful beer.

On tap at Smog City Brewing in Torrance, CA.

Pours a clear gold with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of grain, lemon zest, and kumquat aromas. Taste is much the same with slightly tart kumquat, lemon juice, and earth flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that has a better kumquat presence in the smell to me.

Serving type: on tap.
