proof that amber beers can be interesting! this one sits somewhere between an english pale ale and a hoppy, american red. nose is redolent with chocolate malts, with a little bit of sweet citrus and stone fruit behind. full, round mouthfeel with lingering bitterness keeps me intrigued; dark malts mingle with pink grapefruit and candied orange. almost a tannic-like dry finish that lasts.

Poured into a pint glass. Pours a medium deep copper amber with a half finger cream colored head with good retention and lacing. Enticing aroma of caramel malt, citrus and pine hops, light tropical fruit and orange family citrus, lightly estery. Flavor dominated by citrus and resinous pine hops, orange family citrus, hint of mint and stone fruit; finishes with resinous piney and citrus hops. Medium bodied with peppery carbonation. A very nice, resinous hop forward ale, hopped like an American IPA, but with malt flavors more in line with the labelled amber ale, although not as malty as many red ales. The hop flavors are very well selected and flavorful. Hoppy amber/red or IPA, this is a very tasty hop forward ale. Nice job.

Beautiful beer to try, and I'm very pleasantly surprised by this one. Warm amber color, flavors of malt and toffee richness, smooth but not overpowering hops, very slightly piney. Very drinkable. Can't decide whether I want to score as a 4.25 or 4.5. I enjoy the fact that I can drink a few of these and not be obliterated, unlike my favorite DIPAs.

Confirmed 7% ABV

Another phenomenal sixer from Smog City, this one is a "Hoppy Amber Ale,' aka an IRA, one of the most difficult styles to tackle.

L: Again, amusing and well-designed label adorns the bottle. Pours with a hazy red/amber body that clears as it warms. The head is dense, irregularly shaped and ridiculously persistent. Lacing is sticky and ornate; this is easily one of the sexiest beers I've ever seen.

S: Pine and sage pop out of the bottle when cracked, followed by a whiff of lemon rind before a rich, smooth caramel sweetness takes over, decked with notes of juicy plum, pineapple, and mango and a peppery spice on the finish.

T: As expected from the complex smell, this brew holds a long and bold flavor profile that is not for the faint of palate. The juicy plum is noticeable first, but bitter herbal sage cuts through it and lingers almost to the finish. Before it fades, malty notes of caramel, chocolate, tobacco, and grain help to ease the bitter bite, then at the last moment, the bitterness slips away entirely, leaving just a mild whole grain bread presence on the finish.

F: Thick, medium-full body, but the frothy texture and the hoppy bite makes it easy to drink. The finish is light and crisp: a smooth maltose sweetness is the last guy to leave the party.

O: This brewery is slaying. Keep it comin' boys! I guarantee people will drink it.

Appearance - Pours a copper with three fingers of creamy tan head.

Smell - leafy and piney hops, bready caramalts, pine resin, grapefruit peel, hint of peach, tropical fruits (citrus).

Taste - Starts off with the leafy and piney hops then goes into the bready caramalts, pine resin, peach, and grapefruit peel.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes stick with a lingering bitterness from hops and sweetness from the malts.

Overall - A spot on American red. The peach flavour is a unique twist to this style.

500 mL bottle. Amber body. Small white head. Lightly fruity aroma. Caramel. Apple and a little nutty. Tastes pretty sweet. Light caramel sweetness. Strong bitterness and grassy hop flavor. Nutty malt flavor lingers with the bitterness. Medium body. Medium carbonation. Kinda meh.

500ml bottle poured into a teku, no bottle date

A- pours a deep ruby amber color with a small creamy off-white head that retains nicely, leaving some sticky lacing behind

S- citrusy hop aroma with a burst of tangerine juice, fresh mint leaves and some earthy notes. Sweet caramel malt undertone adds a light biscuit aroma on the close

T- citrusy hop flavors up front with an emphasis on grapefruit and tangerine, leafy and earthy with a touch of pine. Caramel/toffee malt sweetness balances it out, with a hint of fruity peach on the finish with more hop bitterness on the linger

M- medium-light body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that finishes creamy

O- a very good amber that has plenty of fresh citrus hop, but balanced out with a nice sweet and malty backbone

Amber color, some hop and pine aroma which you then taste, but evened out by some malt character. Slightly dry finish, good amount of carbonation.

500 ml bottle poured into a pint glass

A: Pours a burnt amber orange with a vanilla colored creamy head, lots of lacing, clear, doesn't look carbonated but overall, nice looking head and color.

A: Pine needles, grapefruit rind, toasted malts, picking up some alcohol on the nose, pretty vibrant aromas.

T: Up front, touch of pine needles and grapefruit rind like the nose, moderate amount of bitterness, don't really pick up the toasted malts from the aroma, finishes semi-dry and the flavors fall off.

M: Semi-medium body with a decent amount of carbonation.

O: Nice look and aroma however the taste does not stand up as well, still a good tasting beer, there are better American ambers.
