I drank this ipa with a pizza I grilled. The toppings were cherry tomatoes, goat cheese, mozzarella, mushrooms, caramelized onions and figs. It was in the low 90's in long beach this ipa carried its weight.

Tropical fruit, lemon and floral notes to start, some faint spice, before a well-balanced malt presence on the finish. Body was full of juice, refreshing, tempting, with no trace of the moderately higher abv. I may have gotten an older can (there was no bottled date) as it was not quite as hoppy as I expected from a self-proclaimed hop-bomb.

I am no connoisseur but I love tasting beer and this was an exceptional taste. Very entertaining fragrances and just the right amount of bite and bitterness to be refreshing and keep it distinctive above the otherwise smooth and pleasant flavors. The "look" was darker than I expect from an IPA but it promised better flavor and delivered.

Heads up, hop heads! Smog City is putting their beer in six packs now, and it's the best thing to happen to the socal craft beer scene since Aurora Hoppyalis.

Best part? Super fresh. This brew is exactly two weeks old, but I've found their stuff on shelves less than a week from the bottle date several times. This guy is is a seasonal and though not quite as smooth, it's a little more bold and crisp than their standard IPA.

L: Gnarly bottle art with the green armored gorilla. Reminds me of One-Punch Man. Poured into a goblet, there is a metallic copper hue to the viscous transparent body. The cream-colored foam leaves wide bands of sticky lacing and a thin film lingers eternally atop the drink.

S: Tangy pineapple and passionfruit burst from the bottle upon cracking, leaving a spicy sting in the nose like fresh basil with a hint of black pepper. When I take a deeper whiff from the glass, I also get ripe banana, honeydew, tangerine, toffee, green bell pepper, and more basil on the finish.

T: The freshest, most pristine tropical hop aromas preface a sip that feels like stepping into IPA heaven. Strong orange and grapefruit pith take center stage, while juicy pineapple and passionfruit notes dance around the sides of the tongue as the melony, caramelly sweetness builds. About two seconds after a swallow the bitterness begins to dominate, gradually building for another several seconds until all you taste is pith and basil, then dissipates with equivalent grace.

F: That bite... That richness... Couldn't be more perfect.

O: If you're in SoCal, stop at a Whole Foods and grab a six pack from Smog City. It might just be the best beer you've ever tasted.

Clear golden yellow with long-lasting white foam. There is a faint lemony aroma and something flowery. Pleasantly peppery taste along with the lemon rind. Green pepper. Some malty sweetness and medium body. Woody finish with some astringency. More than enough bitterness in the aftertaste, but still quite drinkable. From the 500 ml bottle purchased at BottleCraft in San Diego.

Caramel and amber color. Smell is strong. Smells mostly of weed, but a bit of pine and lemon. Taste is pretty smooth and malty for an IPA. Still a solid lemon and pepper flavor from the hops. Overall, the smell is powerful and great, the taste solid but unspectacular.

500ml bottle served in a tulip. Bought it in Oxnard, CA and brought it home. Don't see a date.

Pours crystal clear deep golden with a biggish head and not a lot of carbonation. Smell is nice -- slightly juicy, green and floral, maybe a hint of vanilla sweetness.

Taste is strongly bitter -- if I look for sweetness, I get just a bit of floral/juicy sweetness. Otherwise, I get some dankness, and a little vegetation, and a shit-ton of bitterness.

Mouthfeel is surprisingly thick and sticky. Not insanely so, just surprising for the lack of sweetness. Overall, it's a solid IPA.

Eh. It's label has more draw than the actual beer. It was good. American style IPA with a crisp and light malt profile and tons of tropical hop notes. Totally seasonable and easy to drink.

Pours a bright golden yellow with an eggshell white head that leaves tons and tons of lacing in the glass. Aromas are off the charts with the amarillo hops: mango, papaya, pineapple dominate. Flavor is a more subdued melange of tropical fruits with a sweet honey-like backbone. A medium-light body with a medium amount of carbonation and hop bitterness to cleanse the palate of food. This is one of LA's best IPAs, for sure.

Clear yellow with thin white foam.

Amarillo hops.

Bitter, musty, dry fruit. Flavors of mango and guava but not sweet. Not into IPAs so much and this one's out of my range. All amarillo? Simcoe might be the bittering hop. But what do I know.

Light body, easy drinking.

Another solid beer from Smog City. A: Pours a clear yellow orange with a bright white foam that leaves just a little bit of lace on the glass. S: Get hints of lemony citrus that flows nicely into a good pine resin. T: I get a lot of grassy, earthy notes up front, with a smooth and not overly aggressive piney flavor on the back end. Mildly Dry finish IMO. O: A great drinkable IPA from a good brewery. Definitely not the best beer overall that I've had from Smog City, but another great one to add to their list. Would definitely drink again.

Pours dark gold with a wispy white head.

Smells like... Amarillo! Nice briteness, well balanced. Simple and maybe newbies don't like it, cud it don't taste like cat pee or passion fruit, but this is a perfectly desirable way for a beer to smell.

Taste... Like Amarillo! Gumballhead is the most ready comparison, though this isn't as softly balanced. Still, the malt here provides a wonderful balance against which the hops may dance.

P: Foamy white pour with low retention, orange amber, great lacing that lasts.
A: Fruity, lemon drops.
T: Lemon drops, piney resin, hoppy, malts.
M: Initially, it gets you in the cheeks, and settled with a fair bitterness in the back. Well balanced with a light to medium mouth feel.
O: This is my first Smog City but not my last! Cheers

500 ml bottle poured into a tulip

A: Pours dark orange with a bright white head, beer is clear, some decent head retention, some lacing, decent amount of carbonation streaming up the glass.

A: Guayaba, garlic/onion, hints of sweet malts, slight pine and resin.

T: More malty sweetness than hop notes, hints of tropical notes, pine, resin, pretty solid, lacks hop punch, moderate amount of bitterness, finish is semi-dry with some citrus zest lingering in the aftertaste.

M: Medium/light mouthfeel, semi-dry finish.

O: A middle of the road IPA, needs some punch on the hop notes, a little unbalanced with the malts, could be an old bottle and the hops may have faded, I don't see a bottle date.

Poured from 500mL bottle into a Tired Hands teku glass.

Look - Pours a clear burnt orang/amber with a thin dissipating head. Plenty of lacing that clings to the glass.

Smell - Tropical fruits and an earthy pine smell.

Taste - Similar to the smell. Malts, tropical fruits, pine, and I even get a bit of dirt as well. The flavors meld well, though.

Mouthfeel - Kind of thin considering the stature of this IPA, but carbonation is good.

Overall - An awesome offering by Smog City. I've grown to love them (even as a Jersey dweller), and they continue to impress me. I wish the mouthfeel was a little thicker, but overall, this is an excellent west coast IPA!

Let me start by saying the that the SMELL was invigorating. Very floral and citrusy- just awesome.

The LOOK was good enough in my vintage LA RAMS smoked glass tumblers that I picked up at Goodwill a couple years ago and gave them to my wife for X-MAS. They have been in the garage up until a month or two ago when the RAMS decided to come back to LA.

The TASTE was very similar to the smell, but a little less intense. Well balanced leaving slight bitter aftertaste, excellent west coaster. Happy to have spent money on it- will share with friends.

FEEL- could be a bit more thick, but still, most excellent.

Overall I really liked this beer because I had been waiting 6 months to see an IPA from Smog.

Iss some good shit.

Amarillo hops shine through very well in this one. Smell is fragrant fruit on the nose that begs for you to take a sip. Taste is distinctly Amarillo and as I mentioned before, this particular hop is on on display. Great lingering bitterness and subtle dankness. Nicely done.

A fine example of the west coast style. Nice tropical fruit notes up front with piney finish. The grassy finish lingers a little too strong and hard for my taste. Light-bodied and refreshing. Definitely would like to try this off tap someday.

Clean and transparent yellow look, lots of head forms.
Definitely a 'west coast' malty smell, this for some reason turns me off... I've had too many underwhelming experiences once I notice this distinct aroma. wish I could know exactly what it is.
Still what was expected after the nose gave off the malty notes.

This beer surprised me. The smell is ridiculous, mouthfeel is crisp and clean. $5 is not a bad deal for a great beer. 7.8% is well hidden too.

Amazing that so few have reviewed this beer up to this point. Reviewing my most recent experience with it:

Poured one-pint of fresh bottled (just four days old) into tulip glass. Appearance was a bright cooper with a very minimal white head. Smell is both flowery and citrus-y, which carries over to the bright and engaging flavor. Appropriate bitterness on the back-end, but overall, the flavor combines grapefruit and resiny dankness incredibly well. Mouthfeel is fairly light and smooth, especially when considering the ABV on this beer.

One of the best L.A. county IPAs, and they now bottle it (for a very affordable $5 or so). Highly recommended you get your hands on this one if you can.

On-tap at Boneyard Bistro, Sherman Oaks, CA

A: The beer is crystal clear golden yellow in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high white head that died down and left a thin layer of bubbles on the surface and lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light aromas of citrusy and spicy hops are present in the nose.
T: The taste has flavors of citrusy hops—oranges stand out in particular—with notes of spicy hops that linger through the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little crisp on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer prominently features flavors of Amarillo hops from start to finish and isntva bad selection if you like this type of hops.

On tap at Smog City Brewing in Torrance, CA.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy beige head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest and herbal hop flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty but smells slightly better in my opinion.

Raul enjoyed this one. Raul enjoyed this one quite well. I mean, it didn't blow Raul's David Beckham Skivvies off like a gale wind up from the subway circa 1955 on Marilyn Monroe, but it did the job well enough. Along with the balanced hoppiness was a nice lil citrus zest that would make any well respected man like Raul think about slapping his mama but not actually doing so.

Remember, my peeps, it's the thought that counts!

Saw that this beer wasn't in BAs database.

Location: Mohawk Bend

Serving Type: tulip

A: Light Amber with white, quickly dissipating head and no visible carbonation

S: Here the Amarillo hops really shine orange and spice

T: The citrus drops off but there's definite spice and some resin that lingers on the finish

M: Better than average but thinner than ideal

O: I would go back for more. This is my first beer from Smog City and I was pleasantly surprised.
