On tap at Tony's Darts Away in Burbank, CA.

Pours a hazy dark orange-brown with a foamy khaki head that fades to nothing. No lacing on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, toffee, dark fruit, and bourbon aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel, vanilla, and bourbon flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of woody bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with a very nice bourbon barrel aged presence, especially in the flavors.

Very old world, like hanging out in a British polished wood study enjoying a snifter of Bourbon brew. Texture is a little shellac-like, coating the mouth with boozy viscosity. Nice and smooth, the bottled version is more rounded with less alcoholic burn than on tap.

This is pretty much everything I want in a barrel aged barleywine. Nothing Fancy. The base beer is solid in and of itself. Deep complex malts. The barrel does not overpower the beer. It is not too boozy or not boozy enough. Great example of the style.

Hints of a dark red wine, bourbon, and my favorite 'beer', a very well done barleywine with the alcohol none to present but there none the less. This stuff just glides, me likee. Rich dark almost burnt reddish in color with a small lacing that last throughout the enjoyment. The aroma alone makes you want more.

4 ounce pour at the brewery.

This beer was a huge surprise. Badass name, but it had me thinking this was going to be like drinking a forty.

Far from it though. Big old beast of an English barleywine and I'm truly a sucker for such. Bourbon barrel treatment just icing on the cake.

But even being a sucker for this style and combination, this beer really shines. Great flavor and aroma that showcase that variety of flavors and aromas that the english barleywine can produce. On nose and palate, I was getting raisins, figs, vanilla, oatmeal cookie, just lots of goodies. The bourbon here was well-incorporated and complemented the base beer in way that seemed more to accentuate its great flavors rather than cover them.

All around a huge surprise and a stellar beer. I hope they bottle this some time.

I have historically not put Smog City high on my list. My feelings have recently changed with several of its latest efforts, this one being the highlight and perhaps the best effort from Smog City in my opinion.

Rich brown tones with an off white head is appealing. Nose of vanilla, figs, rich roasted grain, light coffee, almost an umami sweet "brown" character - all very appealing. The mouth and flavor profile follows the nose with rich and most appealing caramel, maple, brown sugar, roasted grain, vanilla and toasted banana tones.

This one gets better and better as it warms. I really like this one and I am not a barley wine fan.

T: there is a weird bitterness in between the sweet caramel raisin.
F: medium carbonation, syrupy / sticky feel

Completely clear, it's been a long time since I've seen a clear bwine.

Smells fantastic, big and beefy. Malts vanilla and a hint of peat, I like it!

Taste follows the nose, nice vanilla barrel and a little bit of peat. Lots going on, a tad hot but nothing close to 13.5

Heavy medium body, tad thin considering the abc but it does the job. I wish it was a bit more sticky to linger more

Very good ba bwine. Not world class but better than most, and most certainly better than 89 on ba. I'm aging a few for sure. Recommend

Thank you kindly 3sh33ts for getting some to me!

Bottle 1404

A: Deep ruby body with ridiculous clarity for a BA barley wine. Wispy head disappears to nothing almost immediately.

S: Big caramel, vanilla, and toasted coconut layered with dark fruit and a custard like sweetness. Crazy inviting.

T: Figs, burnt sugar, and woody bourbon in the forefront. An odd but pleasant berry note takes up the rear. Alcohol heat makes itself known as it warms.

M: Medium bodied and dry with a lingering tannic finish. Much thinner than most barleywines but is fitting here.

O: Damn impressed with this one. Haven't had much that I've loved from Smog City, but am really happy to have tried this.

Pours a dark Ruby with a thin khaki head. Aromas and flavors are incredibly exquisite: figs, cherries, oak, Bourbon, vanilla, leather, molasses, and some alcohol heat. Chewy and drinkable. A sipping beer and a real treat.
