From BeerAdvocate Magazine #91 (Aug 2014):
Sweet, Roasty, Basic, Good
Drops near opaque black with a frothy tan head in the glass. Nose is clean with a grainy aroma. Flavors are quick on the palate and range from black treacle, caramel, and toasted malts to roasty, earthy, cocoa, and mild coffee note with a dry, slightly yeasty, finish. A bit one-dimensional, but sometimes simple is good; as it is with this black ale.

Served on tap in a pint glass.
Appearance – The brew is served a super dark brown color with a one finger head of dark tan foam. The head has a decent level of retention, fading over time to leave a good sum of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is very dark and roasty with lots of toasted malt and some light dark fruit notes. Along with these smells comes a rather decent showing of some coffee and a touch of earthiness.
Taste – The taste begins with a nice roasted malt flavor that is deep and dark with some char and a bit of a caramel sweetness. As the taste advances the roastiness gets a bit stronger while the caramel sweetness fades a bit. While this occurs so too comes some flavors of toast and a touch of coffee as well as a little bit of a yeastiness. At the end a bit of chocolate and dark fruit of a raisin and prune taste comes to the tongue and leaves one with a rather roasty and toasty taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is slightly thicker and more chewy with a carbonation level that is average. Overall the feel is pretty good for the dark and roasty tastes of the brew and makes for a rather easy drinking brew.
Overall – A very nice dark and roasty brew. Overall a nice drinking brew.

$ 7.44 (Including tax)/750 mL cork and cage bottle ($ 0.293/oz) at Spec’s, Live Oak, Texas.
Batch No. 22 bottled on 12/09/2016 (clearly marked on the label), stored at 42 degrees and served at 50 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Opens with a resounding “Pop” but without any overflow.
Appearance – 3.75.
Body – Very deep garnet, opaque if not held to light. Then, patches of bright garnet are visible. Bottle conditioned.
Head – Large (Maximum 5.6 cm, aggressive pour), tan, low density with many rocks, fizzy, short retention, fizzing away to a three mm ring fed by almost invisible effervescence and a creamy island that nearly covers the surface. The second pour is more dense than the first, but still rapidly fizzes away.
Lacing – None.
Pour – Medium brown, clear.
Aroma – 3.5 – After the cork pops, dates and figs. After the head is gone, some char is noticeable. The second pour has a slightly sour bouquet which morphs into an organic chemical smell which quickly disappears.
Flavor – 3.5 - A muddled dark fruitiness is the main theme with the date and fig from the nose indistinguishable. It is slightly sweet. Allowing it to further warm in my mouth fails to release the advertised coffee or cocoa flavors. A slightly bitter aftertaste remains but I can’t assign it to either hops or malt. No alcohol, no yeast, no diacetyl, and either no hops or no malt, depending on where the bitterness is coming from.
Palate – 3 – Medium, less than creamy, soft carbonation.
Impression and summation – 3.5 – Were it not for the lack of lacing, this would be rated higher. The light-backed garnet highlights are quite attractive. The aroma is passable and neither draws me in nor pushes me away. The flavor is innocuous, making this drinkable but not particularly desirable. At least it isn’t a drain pour. The price point is correct for the quality – it’s cheap, drinkable, and worth trying once.

i hate to hate on this one, and maybe i had a bad experience with it, but man, this was really pretty darn average. on tap at the houston airport, which may be at fault for this, but its thick and deep brown with a little red glow but totally flat, i mean, not even a hint of a head to it, so still its a turn off, and the bigger the pour, when its flat, the worse it looks, and this is a texas sized pour... i dont dislike the smell or the taste, its for a second sort of schwarzbier-esque, with a lighter roasted malt quality, some body, and a lagered type conclusion. however, this is sweet for its color, weighty in the body, and offensively flat, like, it borderline ruined an otherwise passable beer for me it was so lifeless. i want to bale the venue not the brewery, but quality control is on the supplier, and this is low quality in this format. some raisin notes, even tobacco if i try hard, licorice if i am delirious, but it just doesnt quite materialize as something enjoyable. i would imagine the bottle are better, but with this experience, i am in no hurry to source one...

Love this brewery. This beer isn't their best. It's good but not great.
L: pours dark brown with a little head
S: maybe it's me but I'm not getting much aroma from this.
T: light Carmel coffee flavor. Slight hint of sweetness. Light carbonation.
F: light & smooth very drinkable and with a low ABV (5%) you can have a couple without getting wasted

Poured at 45°F from a 750ml bottle (batch 12 - 15May14) into a tulip. Consumed on 11Nov15.
LOOK: Pours with a half finger's worth of khaki foam that shrivels down into an off-white line after 15 seconds. Very dark brown in color. Rising bubbles are small and hardly existent. Lacing is thin and also as hardly existent.
SMELL: Has strong metallic aromas that combine with mild aromas of toasted malts and caramel, subtle aromas of biscuity malts, earthy yeast, floral hops, and hints of black pepper, cloves, and alcohol.
TASTE: Initial taste is of a mild metallic taste that combines with mild flavors of toasted malts and caramel. Mild biscuity malts flavors enter right after along with hints of floral hops. Subtle flavors of earthy yeast along with hints of cloves and black pepper come in lastly as all previous flavors persist except for the metallic flavors, which thankfully complete fade away. No alcohol can be perceived in the taste.
FEEL: Medium-bodied and subtly carbonated. Goes down smooth. Ends with a hint of dryness.
NOTE: If that metallic taste wasn't there, this would be so much better. This was a pretty old bottle that I found, so that is most likely the culprit.
