From BeerAdvocate Magazine #91 (Aug 2014):

Sweet, Roasty, Basic, Good

Drops near opaque black with a frothy tan head in the glass. Nose is clean with a grainy aroma. Flavors are quick on the palate and range from black treacle, caramel, and toasted malts to roasty, earthy, cocoa, and mild coffee note with a dry, slightly yeasty, finish. A bit one-dimensional, but sometimes simple is good; as it is with this black ale.

Pours a half finger of tan head on a black body.
The aroma is lots of licorice, anise, some roasted malt and chocolate in the background.
The taste has a nice roasty character, a little bitter dark chocolate.
The texture is crisp and fizzy.
Enjoyable.

Pours out a nice dark brown color, almost black in appearance, its topped off with a semi-dark tan head that’s bubbly and quickly dissipates into a thin ring of lacing with an island of bubbles in the middle. Floral and fruity aromas are present, some spiced apples and mild fig smells too. This is a very bitter ale at first, good roasted coffee flavors do come through, the spices and fruits take a back seat and are detectable. It is dry and light-to-medium bodied. The aftertaste is sweet, the bitterness calms down, the roasted coffee mellows out, and the spice comes through a bit more. The bitterness calms down, as the ale warms up, overall not a bad beer.
