The neighborhood is a little dodgey, but the beer makes the trip worthwhile. Inside, its a brewery with tables and chairs. The beers are Belgian and the owners are musicians and when they are in the mood they will play. There are usually a handful of neighborhood types but most people are there for the beer. If you are up for it, Zeus the brewery dog will gladly sit in your lap and let you scratch behind his ear.

been trying to get in here for awhile now, but weird hours and busy trips have prevented it until now. what a great little brewery these guys have here, sort of an enter from the back situation with a cozy outdoor picnic table area, food truck, lawn games, and awesome murals. its hidden from the road, sort of a dont know unless you know situation, i dig that. inside its spacious but the bar and bar area are small and humble, cramped even as they were fairly busy. looks like a humble brewing operation right now but some room to expand, cooler outside than inside, but a neat set up, very much a working brewery. i was inspired to go here by a couple of epic bottled beers i have picked up from them, so it was cool to go in and try the range of their other stuff. oude funk stands as one of the best beers i have had from minnesota ever, and although they didnt have anything quite that wild on tap, they had some special beers. the cuvee de boom blew my mind, a strong ale aged in pinot barrels, and they had a host of other cool belgian styles as well. all of it was top quality, and the folks making and serving it were first rate. happy to chat, give us individualized attention despite being busy, and really take great care of us during our time here. the food truck was cajun/creole and very good, and the overall vibe here was happy and fun. one of my favorites so far in minnesota, and if you arent familiar with these guys, look out, because they are making some elite level beers right now! cant recommend it highly enough!

edit: i have been back in here since this review and had a couple of beers that werent as exceptional, but remain a huge fan of their space and their work!

Outstanding brewery. Maybe the best in MN, centered in the heart of the micro brewery scene in Northeast Minneapolis. Boom Island's approach is 100% Belgian and Belgian inspired styles, and I must say that few breweries in the country can match them in this regard. While Crooked Stave in Denver and Cascade in Portland are the best that I have tried, I would personally put Boom Island on par with Ommegang, for example. If they have any of their aged beers on tap, make sure to try them.

These guys just have a small sample room with no seating, but they are very friendly and make some excellent Belgian style beers. I really like their beers and I like that most are regularly available at my favorite beverage stores. Really great beers.
