I'm a fan of high ABV Belgians and was gifted a 11.2 oz bottle notched '19. Poured it into a goblet and witnessed a bit of chemistry. Wanting to get the full flavor profile, I swirled up all the sludge at the bottom with last few ounces and poured it in. Dark and cloudy in the glass. It bubbled yet the head died quickly. Bubbles continued to rise as I drank it. The flavor profile is different than say a St. Bernardus 12. Rich, thick, slightly syrupy and complex. Raisin and chocolate hit immediately. Finishes sweet and a little sticky in the mouth. The 12% ABV does not overwhelm the palate, but is present. I do not consider this a sour at all as some others have noted. If you are a fan of Belgian strongs or quads, you should give this a try if given the opportunity. Warning: do not drink on an empty stomach.

oh man! if you like the style, this is really hard to beat. its darker and richer and more malty intense than almost any other specimen i have encountered. so good. rich shiny chocolate color from the tap, with a lazy off white bubble head and a ton of viscosity. the aroma and flavor feature a ton of the abbey type malt, past toasted but sort of nutty, past caramelized but kind of sweet, and incredibly distinctive. it also has a brown sugar or molasses complexion to it, not that its overly sweet, but that raw cane sugar element is there in the taste for sure. some wonderful nuance to this, i pick up notes of strong brandy, dried cherry, prune, cocoa, and even fudge, its rich and its heavy, but its so unique! some neat yeast in here too, not the belgian profile i am used to, but with a wintery spice vibe about it, at least in this beer. enormous body, its almost sludgy, and the booze isnt very subtle, but i look for richness and depth and strength in a beer like this, and this one delivers mightily! among the most unique belgian strong darks i have had. less carbonated than others, which at first bothers me, but as it warms up it lets me chew on all this body more than a fizzy beer would, and i grow to appreciate it! i wish we could find more beer from these guys in the states! this is next level!

I'm with The Bros on this one and not with the average.
As a Belgian fan (I'm guessing that I drink more Belgians than the British and German traditions combined), I'm glad I found this. It's a sock-it-to-me on the buds (and I admit to the alcohol content, too.)
While it Looks and Smells typical of the style (you know, the raisin, dried fruit stuff), these guys developed a high performing yeast (boosted by the dark sugar) that puts together a full, satisfying Taste. Feel slips a bit, but I won't upset the high by over-analyzing the mouth. Overall, find it, buy it, enjoy Extra.

Browner and sweeter than I anticipated. While a good beer, did not have a heavy feel to it yet had that same heavy taste.

I bought a bottle of 'T Gaverhopke because I was told it is a "slightly sour Quad". This sounded quite intriguing. However, while a very nice Quad indeed, I did not detect any sour notes. Not sure how fresh/aged this was so hard to tell whether the lack of sourness was related to my lack of palate sensitivity or the brew's age. Not as dark as other quads but definitely on par regarding booziness and mouthfeel.

Pours a cloudy copper with honey edges and a fairly thin layer of head. There is a serious amount of floaties in this beer. The nose has notes of rum-soaked raisins. The flavor is dominated by a brown sugar essence. The booze comes out on the finish. The mouthfeel is sticky and the body is decent but not what I would call hearty considering the style.

A - beautiful amber with chunks of suspended yeast.
S - dark candied fruits, raisins, alcohol is apparent as a soapy characteristic. Sweet with a nice malt presence.
T - nice sweet malt forward taste, alcohol well hidden for 12%. Hints of raisin, prune/plum, slight must with a twinge of sour a nice nice pepper-ness in the finish.
M - Light body for such high gravity, almost a little too light and watery of a mouthfeel.
O - I can't tell this is 12%, Good and for the price i would go for it again.

I had this beer served out of a 11.2 ounce bottle. There was no head to speak of. The amount of sediment present in the bottle was unlike any other beer that I had ever had. The beer was not just hazy, but downright murky. I must say I do find a beer like this visually appealing. Aroma-wise this beer was very inviting, it reminded me of a Trappist Rocheford 10. The flavor is rich, complex and exactly what you would expect it to be. A nice dessert beer, for enjoying on a winters evening.
