S&B is in the heart of the post-grad area of DC, but that shouldn't fool you because they are an excellent craft bar with great food. As their name implies they are both a barbecue spot and a whiskey/bourbon specialty bar. They'll have a ton of different whiskeys on the ready at any given time. The inside ambiance is unique and cool, making you feel like you walked into a bar out of the wild west with both its wooden look and smell. The draft selection is usually well rounded with a nice mix of locals, standard styles, and exciting rarities. The food while obviously heavily barbecue is very tasty. Great beer bar if you're looking for something a little different.

Sister bar of Meridian Pint, which I also recommend. I was happy to see three Firestone Walker brews I'd not had as well as a Goose Island sour. The bartender hooked me up with samples of them all, I didn't even ask - just mentioned my joy at seeing brews I can't get in Charlotte, NC. Fantastic little pub in a neat arts district part of town. The folks here and at Meridian Pint could not be cooler. We had a blast there, check em out, great beer selection poured by folks who know beer. The ribs I saw delivered looked and smelled amazing.

Visited on Tuesday night of the CBC (3/26/13). Lots of the craft beer bars in town had special beers on tap. Smoke and Barrel was not exception with a variety of Firestone Walker and Sculpin beers.

The place has an upstairs and downstairs (Bottom of the Barrel). Each is somewhat different. Downstairs being darker with lower ceilings. Sort of the typical basement bar feel. The downstairs bar has fewer taps, so upstairs will have a great selection.

A - Friendly. Crowded but generally polite clientele. Upstairs has a restaurant feel, while downstairs is bar-like. Both areas serve food.

Q - Didn't get the feel that this place was as tuned into some aspects of craft beer as others. Tasters were available, but served in 4oz shot-like glasses.

S - During my visit I spent time at both the upstairs and downstairs bar. Three people behind each bar, even though the downstairs bar is much smaller and fewer people can occupy the surrounding space. Servers/bartenders downstairs were very friendly and helpful. Upstairs not so much. The one downstairs server with which I had the most contact knew little about craft beer.

S - Selection was good, especially since they had Firestone Parabola, Sucaba and Annivesary 16 all on tap. Generally a good variety.

V - For the once in a while type beers I was drinking the night of my visit, I was happy with the prices.

Need to visit on a less special evening to gain even more insight. Definitely a place I will go again.
