The beer pours a nice golden color with a foaming white head.

It has a citrus-packed IPA aroma - it is very fresh.

The taste is exactly what you would expect based on the look and aroma - it is a very fresh and juicy IPA. The flavor dances around on your tongue for a little bit, but it does not have the lingering “IPA feel” that many IPAs tend to have.

This beer goes down pretty good!

Mankato Mad Butcher IPA, 6.5% ABV. Pours cloudy orange, with a faint ring of white bubbles. Nose is sweet and malty, taste is sweet honey and peach, almost no bitterness, with a piney aftertaste. Decent mouthfeel, overall excellent.

Appearance: Pours a deep, medium clouded orange color with a mild white head that fades quickly. SRM of 11-12. (3.75)

Aroma: Strong aromas of mandarin orange citrus, pineapple, passionfruit, and peach. A little fruit punch. (4.00)

Flavor: Flavor follows the nose with lots of orange, passionfruit, peach, pineapple, and some citrus. Very juicy. Lots of orange-pineapple juice. It's like a mandarin orange cup mixed with pinapple. Minimal bitterness. A malt profile I cannot peg. Candied or pale malts I presume. Definitely leans sweet, but light and reasonable. Mostly fruity sweetness and pale/candied malts. (3.75)

Feel: Medium to light bodied. Light carbonation. Feels juicy. (3.50)

Overall: I think this one is more fruity and juicy than a midwest IPA. Lots of orange-pineapple juice. Mandarin orange and passionfruit to support. I don't get a strong bready malt profile, but rather fruity sweetness. It's like a sweeter east-coast IPA. Nice orange and pineapple/passionfruit flavors. (Final Rating: 3.79)

The inevitable mix of mosaic and citra hops (my favorites).

A solid ABV with graet carbonation and flavor. More than J like to pay, but a great treat from a "local" gamer brewery.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip.

Pours a just-beyond hazy cloudy orange/amber. Good carbonation provides a two-finger off-white head, which fades to a skein of froth, then gradually settles into a solid ring of clinging lacing. Very persistent. An excellent look.

The aroma is awash with hops from all over the spectrum. Tropical fruits first, with mango and pineapple, followed by citrus (grapefruit and blood orange). floral aromas, and then hints of pine. White pepper spicy yeast, white grape, and crackery grain notes, with hints of grass and booze. A touch of honey and peach. Excellent aroma, with distinctive notes.

The flavor is much more subdued and muddled. Very fruity, but the precise aromas don't quite translate. Vague tropical and citrus flavors are skewed to the sweet end of the spectrum, with the bitter pine notes failing to quite "get there." Hints of booze.

Medium bodied, the brew could use just a bit more carbonation. Seems a bit flat.

If the flavor matched the aroma, and if there was a shade more carbonation, this would be a serious "dark horse" contender for my favorite IPA. A gorgeous brew that falls a little flat at the finish. Still, an excellent brew.

Hazy yellow, faint smell of hops with a note of tropical fruit - great mouth feel - a touch of bitterness that fades away to hoppy indulgence... a definite winner- and from a can... I got a single to try and wish I had gotten more

Here is a CANQuest (tm) story for the ages. I was wrapping up the 2017-'18 school year at a school on the very western edge of the city & as I am wont to do, I stopped in at Dominion Pizza to scour their selection. A drinking buddy, whom I had not seen for a time, wanders in with his girlfriend, we make pleasantries & they sit down as I continue to drink & finish up. I am on my way up the street to catch the us when he comes running up with this CAN for me! It seems that he had been on a job assignment out to Minnesota & just happened to have this CAN still with him. He could make no guarantees, but it has been chilling in my reefer for a few weeks. We shall see.

From the CAN: "Fwhap!" as he swings around a rubber chicken; "60 IBU Juicy Citrusy"; "Citra and Mosaic hops drive the Mad Butcher wild (and yeah, he's a real person!), and this American IPA delivers them in spades. We don't recommend playing catch with a pig until he keels over, though. Just stick with the beer."; "This Is Madness!" The whole label is evocative of Roy Lichtenstein POP! Art. Ha ha.

Given my CAN's history, I wanted to be as gentle as possible with it. I beCAN with a Crack! of the vent, which actually fought me & I girded myself for spraying or geysering through the vent. Nothing untoward occurred, so I proceeded with a slow, gentle Glug into the awaiting glass. Again, or still, nothing untoward was taking place, so once I had it sufficiently deCANted, I CANducted a vigorous in-glass swirl to raise just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with good retention that left nice lacing in its wake. Color was a pretty, solid-Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity. Nose smelled (especially) like the Brach's caramels with orange filling that my late-maternal grandmother used to put out. Mmm. Orange citrusiness, caramel maltiness plus an undefined tropical fruitiness that could have been any one of or a CANbination of the usual suspects. Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium to full, not quite creamy, but on the approach. The taste was totally fruity, from orange citrusiness to tropical sweetness, commingled with a caramel maltiness. My friend was worried that this may not have held up, but if it was this good now, I CAN only imagine what it was like fresh! The CAN read: "08.07.18." so maybe my friend thought that he had somehow done this one a disservice. Not in my eyes! Whatta gift to a Midwest-leaning hophead! Finish was dry, but not gaspingly so. I was still getting a lot of tropical fruit well after the finish, so that may have CANtributed. Many thanks & good lookin' aht!

Poured the beer from the can into a pint glass. There was no "canned on" or "sell by date" on the can, so it is hard for me to know how fresh this beer is.
Look: The beer pours a golden orange color with a good two finger fluffy white head.
Smell: The beer smells of pine, citrus, hops and a hint of malt.
Taste: The taste of this IPA is very good and balanced. There are flavors of pine, grapefruit and mango.
Feel: The feel of this beer is between light and medium and leans towards the medium side.
Overall: This beer is very good out of the can, I just wish I knew how old it was or when it was canned. I would also like to try this beer fresh on tap.

Interesting that we picked it up at a liquor store in SW Minnesota and the person working gave us a discount because they thought it wasn't very good. I should have asked what they thought was good so I had a point of reference.
Poured out of the can

Medium gold color with light head.

Nice aroma, somewhat citrusy, earthy.

Right off the bat you get the citrus. Tangerine and grapefruit hit you in a nice way. Lighter and somewhat refreshing. Medium to lighter carbonation with a thinner mouthfeel.

Finishes clean and dry with a slight lingering bitterness. At 6.8 though, it almost drinks more like a better session.

Overall, a nice IPA. I think this would be a good one ice cold on a hot summer day.

Mad Butcher pours a copper color, with a small but lacing head. Big floral aroma. Flavor has a nice malty baseline, with good sweeter floral hop flavors. Good body and feel. Overall, its a bigger, bolder IPA, lots of flavors, sweeter finish.

Poured from a can into an IPA glass. Best date of '01.17.18'.
Somewhat hazy tangerine body, white bubbly head settles into slight cap, extensive lacing. White flake sediment at bottom of glass.
Citrus aroma, begins with opening the can and continues from the glass pour.
Balanced taste of citrus hops and malt, some IPA bitterness. Not totally juicy like an NE style IPA.
Moderate, coating mouth feel makes for easy drinking (60 IBU).
A very solid citrus forward IPA.

Got in a trade with The-Adjunct-Hippie. 12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 12/11/2016. Pours hazy medium orange/amber color with a 1 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, peach, apricot, mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, light pine, honey, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical hops and moderate bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, peach, apricot, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, light pine, honey, light caramel, lightly toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine/citrus peel/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, peach, apricot, mango, lemon/orange peel, honey, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero astringent hop flavors after the finish. Light dryness from lingering bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/sticky, and slightly resinous balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 6.8%. Overall this is a great IPA! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical hops and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the mellow bitterness. Very juicy on hops with balanced malts; never too sweet with just enough dryness. A very enjoyable offering.

Hazy ginger golden color with some pulp floating on the bottom. 100% opaque. A head of 1 finger, fading quickly to a thin ring.

Fresh fruits on the nose - melon, orange, grapefruit, pineapple, mango. Just a slight touch of onion. Great!!

Flavor is a burst of citrus, starting with juicy flavors, orange julius-like, then pithy grapefruit and orange, and then finally the peels. Light crackery malt. Mind-blowing good.

Feel is wet and quenching, with just a little pulp on the tongue and a faint resin. Semi-dry parch on the finish.

Overall, I had my doubts about Mad Butcher. This is one seriously killer IPA. "Killer"... I get it now. Grin.

Rich & sticky Hop aroma with great fruit and some here grass in essence. Cloudy yellow gold with a short lived white cap a solid rings marking drinks. Full fruitiness in flavor but not without a nice streak of bitterness just as a reminder that the is a IPA. Foundational malt presence with a light caramel presence. A touch of stickiness in a nearly moderate feel that drinks quite easily. Very solid version of a West Coast IPA.

L-Deep oak colored....minimal head..

S-Fresh tropical fruits, pineapples, mango, papaya. Citrus as well. Ripe, juicy Mandarin Oranges, tangerines. Excellent.

T-Juicy fruits....tropical and citrus again....great blend. Like a fruit cocktail. Light honey cracker like maltiness.

F-Low carbonation...feels a little thin...

O-Up the carbonation and body a little and this becomes a top tier IPA...as is it is still an underlooked gem.
