Anchor Saison Spring AleAnchor Saison Spring Ale
Notes: Anchor Saison™ Spring Ale is a traditional Belgian-style saison with a California twist. The distinctiveness of roasted Belgian wheat malt is enhanced by the peppery, clove-like flavors of a locally cultured saison-style yeast. And, for this release, we chose three California ingredients—lemongrass, lemon peel, and ginger—whose synergy adds a tangy crispness and herbal spiciness to this sharply refreshing, uniquely Californian saison.

Standard Anchor bowling pin bottle poured into a New Belgium globe glass. Pour is clear and deep golden/light amber with a half inch of short lived foam. Nose is spicy and accompanied by a peppery and floral hop presence which expands with warming.

Taste follows the appearance with a spritzy spice and a light caramel sweetness which is enhanced, to my chagrin, by the light carbonation on the delivery. This makes the beer come across in feel as a bit too rich as to my preferences to the style. Touch of lemon on the taste when agiatated but this beer largely falls flat on its heels. Needs more carbonation as it stands but even that would only go so far.

Liking the recent preponderence of saison style beers but find this one a bit flat and sweet.

Since tomorrow is trash & recycling day in my neighborhood, I am laser-focused on getting rid of some of the bottle backlog today. The empties will be summarily placed at the curb and sent away to glass heaven or hell. I don't care since CANs are what really matter!

From the bottle: "Saisons originated with the rustic farmhouse ales of Wallonia, a mostly Frech-speaking region of Belgium. Biere de Saison was brewed during the saison froide (cold season) for consumption during the warmer months. Today saisons are made and enjoyed year-round. As brewers, we were drawn to this beer style's enigmatic history, the freedom it offers, and the creativity it demands.

Lots of verbiage, but now it is time for the Pop!ping of the cap. I utilized a gentle decanting since it has a little age and I see no reason to rouse the lees, if any. I got two fingers of foamy, tawny head with modest retention. Color was solidly Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity. Nose held a lemony mustiness, like Pledge sprayed on old newspapers stored in the attic. That may not sound appealing, but it is part & parcel for the style. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was spicy, citrusy, lightly funky and unique for the style, IMHO. I do not profess to be a Saison guru, but I generally am not a fan, but I really liked this. The finish was quite dry and highly refreshing as a result. I would really dig this in the summer or with Chinese food. Tony Wang's, here I come!

Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.

Not sure if Spring has yet sprung, but I never was one for seasonal sticklers. This stuff pours a mostly clear brass topped by a finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises candied lemon peel, a pinch of black pepper, light cereal grains, and a bit of basic Belgian yeast character. The taste leads with yeast-layered cereal, then quickly shifts to some lemon rind (not as sweet as in the smell), and then on hops the bite of grassily-bitter hops. The end combination of all of this ends up being a grassy ball of lemon rind with a twinge of soap on the back end. Harumph. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a sorta/kinda drying finish. Overall, this saison just didn't do it for me at all. The addition of lemon wasn't necessarily what tanked things, but the hops combined with the lemon certainly did. Boo this stuff.

Bottled 3/6/14.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy beige head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, earth, lemongrass, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with lemongrass, ginger, and earth flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of earth bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with solid lemongrass and ginger qualities that are a bit better in the taste in my opinion.

Balanced for the most part but a tiny bit watery and missing that kick. Still pretty nice drinking

Pours a slightly hazy yellow golden color with white head. Wheat, yeast, some spice, and a little grass on the nose; follows onto the palate. Light bodied. Finishes with spice and some yeast notes.

Appearance: Crystal clear, thin dissipating head. Minimal lacing.

Aroma: Lemon, ginger, and sweet melony yeast esters, and a touch of bubblegum. All very well balanced between each other and with the beer.

Flavor: Unfortunately a bit more muddled than the aroma. Peppery and fruity yeast ester comes out, lemon[grass] and ginger pretty much fall off.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, low carbonation. Not nearly refreshing enough.

Overall: Completely nailed it in my eyes on the balance in aroma, flavor a little less, mouthfeel was totally off.

Amber color with a thick off-white head with good retention.
Aroma with notes of bread, ginger, toasted malts, lemongrass and cloves.
Flavor with notes of ginger, lemon peel, mild booze, lemongrass, wheat malt, white pepper, green pepper and cloves. It is slightly toasted. Dry and bitter aftertaste.
Light to medium body with effervescent carbonation. Alcohol of 7.2% is felt a bit.
This Saison sure delivered the stated ingredients, not sure it ended up being very harmonic. I didn’t feel much the Belgian yeast as usual, but lots of phenolic spices. And you sure need to like ginger, which was a bit overdone.
