App: Iced coffee in color, frothy and creamy tan head. Nice head retention. Decent lacing.

Nose: Chocolate and carmel are right up front, but subtle. A tiny bit of vanilla and toffee.

Taste: Very nice palate, great carbonation level. Smooth and malty in the beginning, which fades to a lightly crisp carbonation.

Notes: Very satisfying. It was balanced and understated.

This is interesting. A perusal of the website shows that this beer was first brewed and bottled in 2005, yet I've never seen it before. I've even been to the brewery. Hrmm. It caught my attention when I was shopping, haven never seen it before, so I picked up a 6'er. Brewed with 2-row barley and wheat malt. 5.5% ABV.

Pours out to a clear very deep chestnut brown, forming a tall poofy dark tan head with very good retention and nice creamy sheets of lace. The carbonation is moderate. The aroma is of sweet malt, raisins, toffee, burnt sugar, and distant molasses. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a cola like twang if sweetness and acidity. The taste begins with some up front herbaceous hops, then caramelized sugar, burnt toast, followed by tobacco, mild woodsy bitterness, and charred wood in the finish. There is this wierd cola like sheen and sweetness in the finish that I don't really care for.

Deep dark ruby, clear. Moderate head, foamy and light brown.

Sweet roasted malt, biscuit-like. Tobacco and mint hints. Dark ripe fruits, grape and apple with banana vibe. Rich chocolate and mild coffee. Alcohol, light. Rich, complex, and good.

Roasted malt, chocolate. Lightly biscuit-like with fruity tones. Mild bittering and floral flavoring from hops. Medium bodied, with ample carbonation bite and foamation. Finishes dry with chocolate, roasted, and mild alcohol.

Not bad. From the website: “‘Bock’ has come to mean a beer darker and stronger than the brewery's ‘regular’ brew.” Agreed. However, I wouldn’t say this is an improvement on their Porter, which is truly top notch. I’m glad to have tried it, but Anchor should make a meatier brew for their “Bock.”

Bought a six-pack for S&G since I do like this former micro (now macro) brewey.

Appearance: Dark brown with a decent frothy head.

Smell: Breads, toffee, some dark fruits.

Taste: The taste is similar to the smell but it does have a bit of fruity hoppiness on top of the breads, malts, and toffee.

Overall: A drinkable version of a great style of beer. If you are new to Bocks, this is a good place to start, but there are MUCH better bock beers out there to be had. Cheers!!

On tap at Anchor Brewing during a recent tour. Great overall taste on this one, great beer! Its a newer beer for them, and they have hit the nail on the head with this one. Not as heavy or sweet as their barleywine, but just as enjoyable to drink. Recommended to anyone wanting a slightly thicker, more complex darker beer.

Pours a dark reddish brown. Minor light brown head. Dark and murky but glassy on the exterior.

Heavy cherry sweet liqueur smell, like a barleywine. Roasted malt is nutty and also sweet; brown sugary. Some mild grape notes.

Harsh sweet cherry flavor mixed with burnt, nutty malt. Brown sugar with grainy barley. Molasses and corn syrup.

Feels syrupy and thick. Has a sharp little bite on the back of the tongue. Ashy and substantial. Good, but not great. Strong and sweetly roasted.

12oz single bottle from "Trader Joes" Salem OR. $1.50 Dark brown beer almost mahogany with a large tightly bubbled tan head.That turns "rocky". Toasty,malty aromas..some dark fruitiness. a little nutty. Nice. Liquorice,treacle,bitter crab apple,cream and slightly sour in a good way. Like a dopplebock lite. Nice smooth creamy palate. Nice beer.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a footed bock.

A: Dark brown. Pours about a 1 1/2 finger, frothy, brown-white head. Settles quickly and completely. Slight lacing.

S: Wood, earth, with a little caramel and black licorice.

T: Cardboard, hay, licorice, and pecan shells.

M: Full and robust malty character. Bitter finish.

D: A little full, and the bitter end dictates a slower, more savoring, type of experience.

Atmosphere is good. Dark appearance, medium carbonation, nice frothy head, but not much in terms of lacing. Nose is very earth-tone-y with some sweet and bitter components. Flavor is woody, and bitter. Overall, this is a good quaff.

12oz bottle into DFH shaped pint glass.

A: Pours a very dark mahogany red with a billowing dense light brown head that slowly faded into a thick film that left a great network of sticky lacing down the glass.
S: Notes of sweet toasted caramel and toffee, brown sugar, molasses and whole wheat bread crust. Finish is lightly smokey and roasted with a herbal touch of hops.
T: Follows the nose albeit a bit sweeter and with a touch of raisin. Finish is lightly smokey and roasted with a touch of herbal hops. Big toasted flavor with maybe a suggestion of coffee and coco in the aftertaste.
M: Bubbly carbonation with a soft, full mouthfeel over a medium-light body.
D: If you love rich and malty this one is for you. Solid example of the style and another great beer from a classic brewery.

Interestingly, I was also at the Toronado in San Francisco
yesterday (5/25/2005) for lunch, and I also tried the
Anchor Bock on tap.

My feelings on it are more mixed: I thought it was a
tasty, drinkable beer, but it did not seem very bock like
to me.

It tasted to me like the Anchor Holiday beer, but without
the spices.

That is, not enough munich malt (or none, probably using
other dark and darker malts) and to much Ale character,
like they must have used their ale yeast to make it,
not their lager yeast.

In some ways, I like it more than their OSA, because
it doesn't have the spices.

Pours a dark, dark brown with red highlights coming through when held to the light. Rich, light-tan head with excellent stickiness and retention leaving a lot of lacing. Smells of toasted malt and some caramel and molasses dominate the nose, which doesn't have much hop presence. The taste is also toasted malts -- caramel and molasses primarily, some pungent fruitiness as well. A dry, bitter coffee-like finish. Relatively complex, though the finish lasts overly long and becomes somewhat harsh and unpleasant. Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation in the mouth. Pretty drinkable and reasonably sessionable.

A lot darker than I expected -- really looks like a stout or porter. Tastes and drinks like one too. Very sturdy for a lager -- every bit as hearty as a good ale.

I like this one quite a bit -- probably more so than the other across-the-board highly regarded Anchor offerings. Nice spring beer too, especially if we're talking about early spring when it's still cold and often dreary.

Some people love this beer, some hate it, all I know is that there's a funny goat eating hops on the label.

Pours a dark, nearly opaque, brown with a light brown head.
Aromas of nuts and molasses. Smells sweet.
Loads of sweet cereal, caramel, and smoky oak.
The carbonation makes this dark beer rather refreshing.

appearance - deep brown opaque with a dark tan head 1 finger of coarse white foam that lingers. Slight lacing and the foam dissipates to form a thin tan cap.

Aroma- Banana!, butterscotch pudding, some roasty almost smokiness. Butter

Taste- buttery roasty and bready like a sqaw or pumpernickle. It comes the closest i think to a buttered dinner roll as i have ever had in a beer. Tony Romas used to serve a darker dinner roll this taste just like it. There is a hint of banana in the front end and a touch of sourdough bread in the finish. hops kind of balance out with a touch of resin and pine.

Mouthfeel- full bodied a bit slick and it sticks to the palate. but dry. Lowish in the carbonation.

Overall- what a surprise i wasn't expecting this from anchorbrewing at all. It makes me look foraward to spring it makes me look forward to my next bottle, and i must say that this is a very unique and distinctly "San Francisco" tasting beer. It could pair well with sea food ( clam chowder For sure ) smoked meats and i could see it going with fruit based desserts for some odd reason.

Black colored brew, amber hues shine through the entire body when held to a light. Small brown head. Rich chocolate malt scent. Chocolate malt taste, maybe just a hint of roast, with a nice light flowery hop finish. Medium bodied, fairl soft and creamy feel. Not bad.

Clearish mahogany with a densely setting foam of tan creamyness about a pinky high. The capping keeps its weight very well present as it loosens itself just a bit while its consumed to let lay a lacing of inky thick patches across the glass.

Aroma is mild of molasses and mildly roasted grains with hints to vanilla, cocoa, and maple. Gains more stature as it warms, gaining a slight pull into some dark fruityness.

Taste is mildy thick with an easy going melange of red and black malt sweetness thats tamed down very nicely letting in some nice little tones of cocoa, vanilla, and creamed whole milk. Very light and floating dryness of grassy spice fades into the finish as it drys off slowly with a simple yet favorable alure to cocoa and grains.

Nicely balanced and nearly full in body for a Bock beer. More porter-esk and stout-like naturalness with its thicker, creamy, milken body that holds a very nice tone the whole way through. It finishes well with a drying complexity, that again speaks more to stouts and porters. So as a Bock, its quite impressionable.

A very well made Bock beer here by Anchor. Quite drinkable and at 5.5% makes for a few to be easily opened and quaffed.

This beer pours a chocolate brown into the pint glass, with a billowy beige head and some lacing. The aroma is sweet, rich with hints of cocoa beans, coffee, and caramel.

What a delicious brew. There is a bitter coffee taste up front, followed up by a sweet chocolate and caramel flavor. A slight fruitiness is in there as well. Hops are present, but reserved. Mouthfeel is medium, creamy, and well-carbonated. Another spot-on performance by Anchor. Recommended highly.

Poured from a cold bottle into a standard pint glass.

A: Deep, deep brown with some mild highlights. Extremely hazy and dense. Head is a light beige color, but dissipates quickly.

S: Lots of malt, with just a faint bit of hop aroma. A good amount of chocolate and a little roasted coffee, maybe?

T: Considerable malt sweetness with chocolate and a little earthiness. Carmel, with a slightly bitter finish.

M: Luxurious and smooth with decent carbonation. Really well done.

D: This is one of the absolute most drinkable beers I've ever had. At only 5.5%, this is a perfect spring session beer.

Overall, this is probably my favorite of the spring seasonals that are readily available in most areas. I would love to see this become a year-round release, but it's always nice to have it to look forward to.
