Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.60%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
With deep black color, a thick, creamy head, rich chocolate, toffee and coffee flavors, and full-bodied smoothness, Anchor PorterĀ® is the epitome of a handcrafted dark beer.

A blend of specially roasted pale, caramel, chocolate, and black malts, along with our top-fermenting yeast, creates complexity without bitterness. The brew is hopped at a high rate, and naturally carbonated. The result is dark in the glass, but surprisingly light on the palate.

12oz bottle marked 7GW poured into a pint glass shows an ebulient dark reddish clear body floating an aggressive 2in fluffy tan head leaving erratic islands of fluffy lacing.

Aroma is sweet bready and roasty malt.

Flavor matches, leaning sweet malt.

Mouthfeel is lighter medium with a nice clean finish.

Overall a classic standard for the style.

Anchor Porter has always been my top porter. It has lately been harder and harder to find in Southern California, along with SN's porter/stout, probably displaced by the legion of DIPA and extreme beer offerings. Unfortunate side effect of an otherwise booming craft beer industry . Anchor Porter is an amazing example of the style, made with whole hops and kreusened in the bottle. Appearance is stellar - fluffy dark tan foam cap sticks around well into the brew, great lacing, inky black color only shows mahogany at the very edges of the glass. Aroma is rummy/molasses, coffee yes, dark fruit. Flavor is sweet malts, bitter chocolate, figs, herbal hoppiness, welcome rummy alcohol heat (surprising at this medium-strength beer) just amazing flavors that blend and support each other perfectly. Creamy mouthfeel, lively carbonation that no doubt supports the excellent head retention, finish is beautiful. Highly drinkable, I could drink several of these without any palate fatigue. Absolutely the benchmark of the style and I wish it were easier to find, and that it is always this fresh.

Beautiful dark beer, more alcoholic than others porters I've tasted. Great cofee aroma and taste with a little bitter taste too.

Decanted from a 12 oz (355 ml) bottle into a conical pint glass; production date November 3, 2016.
A: Pours a very dark brown with a one inch, tan to khaki head displaying good retention and excellent lacing.
S: Aromas of cafe au last, molasses, and anise.
T: Cafe au last and molasses definitely present, but licorice flavor more evident to palate than nose. Complex and well crafted. Bitterness evident but in good balance.
M: Medium to full bodied. Excellent carbonation. Cream mouthfeel.
O: Really an excellent interpretation of the porter style, albeit leaning more toward a stout. Had not tried it before, but definitely will have it again.

Look: Cola brown with a thick, lasting foam that coats the sides in a layer when subsiding. Dark but clear without cloudiness or particulates. Respectable looking.

Smell: Sweet roasted barley with a strong caramel dulce de leche note. There is also a lot of liquorice in the smell, emphasis in the liquor spelling of the word. Herbal licorice smell is definitely a sign of the hoppiness of the beer. Dried stone fruit rounds off the edge of the smell, giving it a fruitiness that definitely reminds me of that extra large muffin-shaped Christmas fruitcake that you get from Costco when it's the season. Complex with many notes, the smell is quite pleasant and truly excellent.

Taste: Starts off with strong roasted malts with a sweetness like a coffee with sugar. Followed by tastes that are similar to how it smells, but with more dried fruit notes of raisin and prunes.

Finish: Finishes roasted like a good medium-dark roast of coffee. Herbal notes leave the palate last, combined with the sweetness it is like a good piece of licorice.

Overall: An excellent, classic porter that pushes the envelope by being refined yet approachable instead of over-the-top. A lot of the celebrated god-tier beers in the craft world are double/imperial styles that throw an ungodly amount of hops to try to impress you, but Anchor porter keeps it down to earth. Dark, sweet, fragrant, malty, hoppy, and not too bitter, it is to dark beers what Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is to pale ales. An outstanding beer that anyone can enjoy, whether you're a light beer casual or a DIPA elitist. If you're a craft beer enthusiast and can't enjoy this, you're a hipster.

Bottle poured into my favourite Delirium Tremens tulip.

A deep black porter with garnet edges when held to the light. Initially a large pale brown head; this rapidly recedes but leaves amazing lacing. Loads of dried dark fruits on the nose as well as some faint hops. Tastes of sweet raisins, dates, figs etc. Quite lively carbonation with a luscious mouthfeel. Overall this is an outstanding porter that I'd happily drink all night. Highly recommended. Cheers!

Poured from 12oz bottle into Seidel Mug. No Date.

L: Black, faint ruby edges, finger width tan head has magnificent retention. Good stick to the glass.

S: Dark fruits like fig, caramel, coffee, molasses. Smells wonderful.

T: Lots of grainy dark malts, as well as coffee, and molasses, dark fruit pops up again as well. Really complex and tasty. Hop bitterness keeps the malt in check.

F: Smooth and creamy, drying grain, nice and crisp, easy drinkability, very nice.

O: Really a magnificent beer.
