Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.60%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
With deep black color, a thick, creamy head, rich chocolate, toffee and coffee flavors, and full-bodied smoothness, Anchor Porter® is the epitome of a handcrafted dark beer.

A blend of specially roasted pale, caramel, chocolate, and black malts, along with our top-fermenting yeast, creates complexity without bitterness. The brew is hopped at a high rate, and naturally carbonated. The result is dark in the glass, but surprisingly light on the palate.

DARK, somewhat more bitter than expected but well within reason, an overall excellent porter.

Bottle poured into a BarrelHouse Brewing Co pint glass

A: Pours deep mahogany brown with a frothy cocoa brown head that settles to a light layer and laces beautifully.

S: Roasted malt, burnt toast, black coffee, a hint of chocolate, earthy slightly herbal notes, and a little toffee sweetness.

T: Roasted malt, earthy, burnt toast pure dark chocolate, a herbal and floral notes, a hint of coffee, and some toffee sweetness. There's a very slight mineral tone, though not unpleasant.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation.

O: Very well done porter.

The appearance was a dark brown color with a nice one finger white foamy head. This one had a nice coating of lacing rimming the glass after the head died after a minute. The smell was dark and roasty with a nice underlying chocolate coming in to balance the coffee that made a slight appearance. The taste was roasty and sweet and still had a decent bitterness from the coffee coming about in to it. There’s no aftertaste but did have a quick dry finish. On the palate, it sat about a light to medium on the body with a decent sessionability aspect to it. The carbonation was somewhat smooth and ends up leaving a decent coating over my mouth and tongue. Overall, I say this was a good American Porter that I would have again.

Pours a dark black with a tan head. Smells of coffee and chocolate. Taste is wonderful roasted malts, some hops, chocolate, and a little coffee. Medium in body and carbonation. Overall it's a great and very unique porter.

16oz pint glass.
Pours a nice dark brown.. thick brown actually. Nice billowy foam top, that settles too quickly (no point deduction, I just miss it already), with lazy lacing. Smells of chocolate, roasted malt, and a very small hint of .. berry? Taste was extremely well balanced, especially the malt/hop blend. The roasted malt was at the forefront, the hops were mid-to-back, all the while the chocolate kept it all in check. MF was well presented. Very smooth, light carbonation and creamy.

I am pleasantly surprised how well this tasted. It wasn't overly complex, but everything they did to make this beer, is well done. I particularly liked the balance between the malts and the hops.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a goblet.
The pour is black with tan head that sticks around. Smell of malts and slight cocoa. Light carbonation and a medium mouthfeel. Nice roastiness to the taste with malts and slight hops.

Very dark brown, almost black color, reddish on the sides. It is not opaque. 2 fingers tall, frothy and tan head. Fantastic lacing.
Fantastic high aroma of malt, bready notes, chocolate. Moderate fruity esters like prunes. Low hop aroma herbal hop aroma. Moderate high sweet malt, bready, low to medium hop bitterness. Medium-rich body, oily, creamy, medium-high, carbonation. Some roasted, sharp notes that supports sweetness. Long, semi-sweet finish with some roasted notes. Warm alcohol.
Very, very tasty porter. I would like to get there some more roasted malts IMO

Look: Black, with a 3 inch light head that sticks around. Lightly carbonated.
Smell: Cocoa beans, chocolate, and cola.
Taste: Reminds me of Coca Cola. Chocolate and cocoa beans. I got more hop taste than I do with most porters.
Mouthfeel: A little thin.
Overall: Pretty good, but has its shortcomings. Would be a good every day Porter.
