Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.60%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
With deep black color, a thick, creamy head, rich chocolate, toffee and coffee flavors, and full-bodied smoothness, Anchor Porter® is the epitome of a handcrafted dark beer.

A blend of specially roasted pale, caramel, chocolate, and black malts, along with our top-fermenting yeast, creates complexity without bitterness. The brew is hopped at a high rate, and naturally carbonated. The result is dark in the glass, but surprisingly light on the palate.

A: Black like it should be.

S: Licorice.

T: Licorice. Hops in the finish.

M: Medium, as it should be.

O: I've been drinking a lot of dark beers lately. This was actually one of the first that finally turned me on to dark beers after disappointing experiences with ubiquitous Guinness. Now, after returning to it, I'm somewhat disappointed in the overwhelming licorice essence and flavor. Just too dominant. Would like a better balance of other flavors/aromas too. Still, great.

Pours a very dark brown almost black color with a nice big brown head with good retention and lacing. Aroma is of chocolate and coffee. The taste has burnt chocolate flavors and roastiness. The mouthfeel was a bit on the thin side. Good drinkability.

Enjoyed this bottle out of a large snifter glass.

A: Pours a dark black with a thick dark brown 3-finger head that quickly dissipates and leaves a wispy lace.

S: Strong roasted malt aroma with hints of chocolate and toffee in the background.

T: Smooth malty flavor with a sharp bitter bite, followed by some sweet chocolate and toffee tastes.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation.

O: Excellent Porter – interesting bitter hoppy profile.

Opaque black, large, foamy head that is light brown coloured and nice retention.

Cocoa and dark chocolate aroma to begin with, there is also a very sweet bitter aroma. Some dark fruits as well as some coffee.

Very sweet to begin with, almost sugary but not quite, there is a rich chocolate taste and a lot of dark fruits. This looks set to be one of the nicest porters I have tried thus far.

Light bodied but not thin. Very smooth and well balanced carbonation. Bitter aftertaste with touches of coffee that stay around long after the beer goes.

It was a lot lighter that I was expecting but at the same time a lot more refreshing and easy to drink. The flavours all seemed well balanced as did the smell, this is a beer I can see me going back to time and again.
